I'm not saying we don't have any good players but this team got us a 4-12 record and both the coach and GM fired. I'm not sure signing our FAs will be their first priority.
Coples and Davis are two players that play a position usually about 6 deep. Solid point... The real question is, what did your friend who is a Packers fan think of trading Revis? That's how we will get some sort of resolution on this subject. You didn't say ignore the O line but as someone was quick to point out, you made it sound as simple as signing Revis and Thomas and we are set. That's Tannenbaum-esque and shortsighted. Other adjectives could include dumb.
does he still want 16 mill a year? then fuck'em, we can get two starting CB's for whatever his single cap hit would. accept this jets fans: Darelle Revis can never solve our problems at CB. even with this cap space Revis would be a waste of resources. he wants to make as much as possible and would only accept a deal where he hits free agency sooner rather than later or one where he makes so much he doesn't have to. To make myself clear, I think Revis is a good player, one of the best. but my fear is that doing what it would take to bring him here would be a more costly investment than it needed to be or worse might have been a wasted effort. lets say we sign him on a one year 16 million dollar deal, or perhaps a deal like he had in NE where two years average out to 16 million. point is we sign him for big cash in 2015 and he's gone by next year, by design. In which case we likely wasted millions more than we had to on what was essentially an over-glorified stopgap player when we could have spent less on an actual stop gap or on a longer term asset at CB who would actually be on contract next year and for sometime after WITHOUT constant negotiating headaches. and worse yet we now have to go BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD because thanks to his absence we're ONCE AGAIN looking for a starting CB, right back where we started, probably 12-16 million poorer overall… for ONE YEAR of this mans services. So yeah a Revis cameo would mean fuck all for this team, but now lets say we sign him to a longterm deal. okay, doing so would take massive loads of guaranteed bucks to keep him away from free agency, we'd have to pony up about as much as a new team would if he hit free agency in order to keep him around. its tough to say how much that would be, but I'd wager at least 24 million guaranteed and thats just to keep him here more the a year. but we have the cap space right? sure… we also had the cap space for MORE than him and could've had a few other CB's for less on their own or in some cases for less COMBINED. Seriously we'd probably pay him more garunteed cash to stick around over two years than TWO players would receive over the same period of time. Is Revis so much more important to have than Perrish Cox or Kareem Jackson or Byron Maxwell that we need to allocate so much more money to meet his asking price and have him? In conclusion: if we're looking for a long term player at CB theres younger cheaper options available for probably barely less production. if we're looking for a short term starter/stop gap at CB, we can get cheaper options than Revis. unless he's willing to take a deal worth a fraction of his precious 16 mill a year, give me Kareem Jackson and Antonio Cromartie or Byron Maxwell and Tramon Williams ANY DAY over the mercenary that won't budge. trading this guy at the time made boatloads of sense and as far as I can tell unless his asking price goes down not playing his game makes just as much sense.
I'd rather roll with Kareem Jackson, Cro, amother FA, Draft pick and Milliner if the glue and tape hold together than waste time with MeVi$ again
You can't build a team for long term success by paying any CB 16 million a year when 65% of the offense sucks. If Geno doesn't make a huge consistent turnaround and they fix the O line, they can sign Revis and Cro it won't matter. The Jets will be in the same place in 2016 and beyond (sitting on the couch in February.) The only interest the Jets should have in Revis is to bait the Patriots and Bills in paying more than they should.
I have to laugh when I hear everybody screaming for Cromartie now and a year ago probably but not necessarily the same people saying he was washed up and get his old sorry ass out out of Dodge Then he was dying to come back and we could have had him for 3M.
We're not spending too much elsewhere in Free Agency. Yea we need LB,Guard, Safety, etc. but we're not going after the big names at each position. 48mil-16mil=32 mil..we'd still have more cap room than the Bills. That contract wouldn't ruin this team, it only would improve it with Revis on the roster. I doubt he'd get a fully guaranteed contract but I'd give him a 4 year deal around 15 mil annually with a chance to eat a little $ and cut him year 3, and the chance to cut him outright year 4. It's hard to tell what the market is going to be for him but Woody is going to make sure we're contenders if he has any interest in coming back.
I feel like people assume he'll play at his 2009-2010 level. He's still a good CB, but he'll never be at that level he was a few years back.
If the team is now that smart then the franchise truly has turned the corner and it's sunny days ahead.
It seems like the same people that cry we have too much cap space also cry about not wanting to over pay anyone. Free agents go to the highest bidder. Jets will have over 58M in cap space once Harvin is gone. The team was 4-12 and hasnt made the playoffs in four years. Its time to start getting good players. Revis at $15M a year still leaves the Jets with over $43M. Right now they dont have a QB that commands $15M+ a year, so its not a big deal to carry Revis for 3 years. If you dont have a star QB, then you need to do your best to build everything else up. In theory, the Jets could sign Revis, D. Thomas, Cromatrie, and CJ Spiller and still have $15M a year left in cap space.
He had a horrible 2013 season and didnt deserve the money he was going to be paid. Should he have been brought back? Sure we can say that now but at the time he looked awful
As with most available FAs it depends on the price. My stance is still the same in regards to Revis and that's I'm just not breaking the bank for a Cb. With that in mind no chance on Revis as we all know he will follow the most money.
I'd pass on Revis. he's just too expensive for a team with as many holes as we have; even with the large amount of cap space we have. I'd rather sign Cro and Maxwell; we could have both for less than what Revis will cost alone. If we get back a healthy Milliner and McDougle, we could have good depth next season at a position that was a huge liability in 2014.
I hope Mevi$ goes out of the AFC East, but I would be okay with him going to the Bills. While he fits Rex's scheme, this will be the first among many moves that Rex will call for that will again lead to his demise. I don't want him anywhere near the Jets. We're not in win now mode and he's not worth a multi-year deal considering his injury history and he isn't getting any younger. Plus f*** that guy, I do not want to root for a guy who couldn't care less about his team or the fans.
