What about them would paint them as liberals? Hard to draw many parallels from their time to today but I always thought they'd be more like tea partiers myself.
Their respect for free speech and individual rights was an anomaly in their time. They were very far on the left wing of the spectrum and truly revolutionary in their approach to individual freedom. The Tea Party is reactionary. It wants to go back to things that worked in the old pre-industrial civilization. Chickens for Checkups was a real thing for the person talking about them. Never mind that a checkup would have consisted of tapping the knee and listening to the chest and then pronouncing the patient likely to expire soon and suggesting that they put their affairs in order before they died of the flu.
Soooo what about the fact that liberals tend to wish for a nanny state? The tea party believes in liberty, much like the guys you're referring to.
The Tea Party believes in not taxing people. Not in preventing theft by taxation but in not taxing at all. Good luck with running a modern society in a devil take the hindmost fashion.
That's complete bullshit. The Tea Party believes in no such thing. Why would you just make something up?
It's not bullshit at all. I just read them for what they are and every government program is a bad program and government shouldn't spend other people's money and chickens for checkups instead of medicaid and medicare. They're the nihilist small government party right now and they're not part of the Republican party, just a splinter wing that has not fully separated yet. http://www.teapartypatriots.org/actions/calls-to-action/calltorepeal16/ 16 is the 16th Amendment which granted the Federal Government the right to levy taxes.
Let me help you. I think a flat tax rate is ridiculous and will never happen but you are either purposefully lying or willfully ignorant on this one. Which is it?
They're looking to get rid of the federal income tax. The repeal of the 16th amendment would end federal taxation on individual citizens and revert taxation to just excise taxes and tariffs. There is no modern economy anywhere that runs on this basis. Individual income tax is the basis for ALL developed economies in the 21st century and was for most of the 20th century as well. The 10 countries with no income tax are the UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bermuda and the Caiman Islands. Which of those 10 countries do you think works as a model for the US at this point?
Replace would be the accurate term, not get rid of. I don't know why you're purposely mischaracterizing here. Maybe you do?
I think they are looking for a consumer tax. Not the Tea Party necessarily, but tax reformers. Pay for what you use. No withholding. That would be a circus. No withholding tax. The government likes to commandeer money. Actually having to wait to collect it might make them more frugal in their ways, though
The tea party believes we're over taxed, the tax code is over complicated, the government is extremely wasteful with our tax dollars, and that the IRS is abusing it's power to target American citizens based on political affiliations. I happen to agree on all those points. What they really want is massive tax reform replacing the complex tax code with a flat tax and they believe the bast way to accomplish that starts with the abolition of a corrupt IRS. They do not want to get rid of income tax all together as bradway would like us to believe. I don't think a flat tax rate is realistic but it's nice to see someone with a goal like this.
I also think that the Tea Party is a small government lower tax party. I have no problem with them. Sometimes I think their judgment is poor, especially when I see the candidates they put up from time to time. Nobody believes flat taxes or the like will happen, but that is because the politicians and embedded interests do not want it. Not because it cannot be done. The simplest, and fairest tax, is the one that is the absolute same for everyone. Ideally, to be truly fair, every American would pay the same toll. We supposedly receive equal protection front he government. But that is ideal. A sales tax could be designed to replace the income tax. People would then be empowered to spend their money on what they need. In other words, they could creatively reduce their own taxes and not depend on corrupt politicians and venal lobbyists to determine what they pay. LOL. But what has this got to do with the NY Jets?
I don't get what is bad about abolishing income tax. It is a total sellout for politicians to avoid government spending issues that continue to put money in already overpaid politicians pockets via kickbacks from lobbyists. Hey let's take a first step in replacing the money that comes from income tax by slashing congressional salary and canceling their annual self voted pay raise and half year plus of paid vacation. God forbid they actually work an entire year. It would also be a nice step toward getting people in office who care about representing the people instead of their families trust funds
If you sharply reduce congressional pay the only people who will be able to afford to go to Congress will be the very rich, and the only thing they'll be worried about is their families trust funds and their cronies. If you want to fix politics take the money out of the other end of the process. Put financial caps on political spending and do the same political advertising blackout period at the end of a campaign that is established practice in most of the west. In other words, do effective campaign finance reform. Dry up the 30 second attack ads and force candidates to step forward and represent themselves to the voters on a continuing basis. Don't put Congress in session more often, force them to come back to their districts and explain themselves to their constituents because that's the only real chance they'll have to advertise for the next election. Make Congressmen spend most of their time slapping hands with the voters instead of dining with rich donors.
I'm not familiar with you but I'm gonna take a wild guess and say you are extemely partisan while pretending you aren't.
