This doesn't happen to most QB's. It takes a combination of a certain level of mobility plus reckless disregard for the down and distance and field position issues involved. With Geno it has happened several times in which he took the Jets out of FG range or made a medium range FG an iffy proposition. We lost the second game against the Pats because Geno got sacked for -10 yards on the 34 yard line making Folk's FG attempt 52 yards. There's just a lack of situational awareness that combines with other factors to cause the Jets grief. This has been a common thread with the young QB's Rex had on the Jets. They have all tended to hold the ball too long and to give up too many yards on their dropbacks, Geno just takes it too extremes at times.
That may be your impression but it's nothing more than a smoky pile of vague, subjective bullshit. There may be twice as many writers covering the team, three times as many radio and television sources and ten times as many bloggers, etc but without specifics you're just repeating nonsense heard a thousand times before. Why not show a few specifics to show how the team or a player or coach was targeted here for what you claim. Tell us what story would have gone unreported in Tampa or Atlanta or Memphis. It's not hard to report bad things about a 4-12 team, it's hard not to.
Go watch Russell Wilson in the SB this Sunday and count how many times you'll see him go backwards as he avoids the pass rush. It happens this isn't a Geno exclusive thing.
If Geno was as successful at it as Russell, no one would complain. Wilson is very effective at this because of his pocket awareness, quickness and elusiveness. Rarely does he give up a sack in those situations, he's either giving ground to gain ground or throwing the ball away. Barry Sanders loved to reverse direction rather than just taking what little was there at the point of attack. That's why he probably has more negative runs than any running back to play the game. Yet you would have been hard pressed to find a Detroit fan to complain about Sanders back then. Most of his best runs came from cutting back 20-30 yards across field before breaking it for an official 50 yard run. When was the last time Geno made a positive play after running backwards for 20 yards?
That doesn't mean that when Russell Wilson does that he is smart. You are talking about his weakness. He doesn't do it all that often and when he does he's lucky. He also has a better surrounding cast to help him in those situations when he is desperately running backwards like a fool. He's a great QB when he's on the move - - forward. When he's on the move backward he is a lucky QB.
Sanders' reverse direction stuff was overblown as well. Most of the time he backed up like a goon or tried to reverse field he lost yardage. Those things didn't make the highlight reel though. Its not true that most of his best runs came from cutting back 20 yards - - most of his lucky, freaky runs yes. Athletically he could from time to time bail himself out by doing that but it was stupid that he even tried it. Less stupid I guess, however, than Geno Smith since he was more athletically gifted than Geno.
I'm not saying it's smart I'm just saying people tend to not complain about it when you are making big plays doing that kind of stuff. However, when you are consistently getting sacked, putting your team out of FG range and/or losing the ball, then it's talked about.
Another classic Geno-ism is breaking the pocket only to run out of bounds 3-5 yards behind of the line of scrimmage…LOL. Throw the ball away you dumb ass!!!
I wasn't comparing Wilson and Geno (it's no comparison) my point was to show that QB's especially young QB's make that mistake constantly.
Geno vs R. Wilson: Geno has the legs but doesn't know how to use them. And maybe doesn't want to. Add onto that inaccuracy plus not a true leader. Bottom line: it's not impossible that Geno could be a good Qb. You just can't blow another season trying to find that out.
As late as last season Big Ben was occasionally sacked outside of field goal range. So apparently he lacks situational awareness- or he was just trying to make a play. He's a vet so which is it? . Also, at least one of the crucial sacks Geno in the Pats game wasn't his fault. Was that situational awareness or poor line play?
Sorry, but it's time to bring in some competition to this qb mess. Geno had horrible rookie year and didn't show much improvement this season, even with a better receiving core and a more "conservative" offense (to limit his turnovers). The kid has talent and a good arm, and can execute the play if everything is perfect, but if the first play isn't there, he struggles. You rarely see him pass to 2 or 3Rd options because he cant recognize them. He lacks awareness and can't read defenses. I guess it's called low football iq. Bring in the best possible veteran AND draft the best option somewhere in the 2nd to 4th round, and let them all compete with Geno.
All those hating on Geno should open their eyes and realize the reason is now shovelling his shit in Buffalo.
You all talk about Geno as if he has temporary blurred vision and once it gets cleared up he'll be fine. Once you get a couple good quarterbacks in here competing for starter, your blurred vision will clear up and then you'll be fine. All you folks ever need is to be dragged away from the dumpster, kicking and screaming, to get what you need to become an NFL team. All the trash of management, scouting, and coaching has been removed, the new folks have been diplomatic enough to skirt around the quarterback issue...soon Geno will be looking for a job at the unemployment office and the Jets will able to blossom into an actual 'competitor".
lol people love to overblow his poor play and completely ignore his good play. Geno is a up and down 2nd year qb who went from a spread offense to a tough West coast one. (even Eli manning struggled in this offense) you don't put up 158.3 vs a pretty good dolphins defense without having the tools and talent to do it. got a feeling he will be a much better player in Chan Gaileys offense. and its his 3rd year which is usually when the light bulb goes on for QB . ( guys like Luck and Wilson are the exception not the standard most qbs are not thriving day 1 out the gate ) drafting Marriota would be the same problem. coming from that Spread offense guys are gonna need time to learn a Pro offense. im not sure what we have in Geno long term. but from a physical stand point kid still has all the tools and is only 23 jets need to continue the development there . wouldn't mind adding a QB like Hoyer in FA tho. for the casual fans theres a legit chance jets won't get a shot at Winston or Marriota. with a thin crop in FA. Geno could very well be the day 1 starter next year.
I'll tell you what we don't have in Geno is a franchise qb......he is not capable of taking a team to the SB
you would know this how? jets haven't put a SB caliber team together since 2010. you expecting some wet behind the ears qb to come in and carry them there by themselves? a bad team is a Bad team no one man is gonna overcome that i don't care who the QB is. hell the cardinals made the playoffs and didn't have there Starting QB for majority of the year. there 5 legit franchise qb's in the nfl Rodgers Manning Brady Luck Brees the rest all up and down qbs.
