I watched Cook a lot this year. I didn't see him once last year. I watched him because YOU were pumping him up. I WANTED to like the guy. I was thoroughly underwhelmed. I'm just not wowed like every game I've seen Mariota play. I hope he blows it away next year, I really do because I don't think we're getting either Mariota or Winston. Time for Archer. See ya. _
Coming out of the draft, Mangold and Revis were sure things to me. Revis was freaking amazing at Pitt and Mangold was amazing at OSU. I meant safe gamble, my bad not sure gamble lol. Not every player is a gamble in the draft. This draft IMO. Randy Gregory? that guy is going to light this league up IMO.
For every amazing player in college that makes it in the NFL there is another that doesn't. Trent Richardson was amazing at Alabama, he was a "sure thing". Marcus Mariota was amazing at Oregon.
I don't put a ridiculous amount of weight on acquired skill. Today's league you have to show me how you play the game, your tendencies, what you know RIGHT now. Take the talent, build on the skills he has now and new acquire no skills. NFL = Not for Long, we don't have time to sit a QB for a 1yr and a 1/2 if he's not ready, not in the NY media. If we got a vet that can hold the fort for 2 yrs then yes let's go get Mariota. Talent doesn't always win, other factors play a role too. Richardson was great because of that offensive line, he was nothing special after that. Jim Brown thought he sucked out of the gate. Mariota was amazing at Oregon, part because he was able to stat pad in that system, but he might not make it either. I want it to be known, I don't think of Mariota like I thought of Geno Smith. I really do like Mariota, all bullshit aside - just not a good fit for us.
What does "show me how you play the game" even mean? He hasn't shown you he can play football? You extrapolating that he can't take snaps from center and that he will not be ready to run Gailey's offense for a year and a half which for all we know could be a version of the Spread which would make snaps from center somewhat moot.
No, I think the Jets should lock up a couple of their young defensive linemen if possible. I think they should try to frontload a deal for Mo Wilk and see if he's willing to give them a bit of a discount for a lot of cash upfront. Signing a free agent or two isn't a bad idea unless those guys are 27 or 28 and right in the prime of their career next year. There's no point in having a guy's best year contribute to 8-8 next year and then have him decline on the Jet's dime thereafter. So if they sign free agents they should be the 25 and 26 year old's coming off their first deal. They'll be expensive but at least the Jets will get their entire prime in the course of the deal and only have one decline year at the end.
I'm thinking that Rex never has played a true FS with the Jets after letting Rhodes go after 2009. He has always played two in the box safeties with at least one of them having a bit of speed to recover on the deep plays. I think he double-visioned Pryor into an in the box safety with recovery speed, which he is not. He and Idzik should have been looking for a true FS last off-season but instead they settled for a Laron Landry/Yeremiah Bell like arrangement and ran into the reality that rookie Calvin Pryor didn't have Laron Landry's speed or experience in the NFL and Dawan Landry couldn't play centerfield the way Bell did in 2012 despite being a career SS before that. When you see the same setup twice with two different GM's and the same coach it seems likely the coach is the one who created it.
Don't know if I agree with this. Jim Leonhard was a true FS. After him we had Laron Landry at FS, who even if you consider is not be a true FS certainly has the prerequisite FS range. So between Leonhard's 3 years and Laron Landry's 1 year, he and Tanny did field real FSs in the 4 years they were together. Prior to the Jets he had Ed Reed who is the model used to create the mold of modern day FS. Rex even picked him up on his way out. So really only under the 2 years with Idzik did we start the 2 in the box safeties trend.
So what if Eli has a stronger arm? Are you seriously telling me that you'd like that doofus as the Jets' QB? There's a alot more to being a great QB than having a strong arm.
If you think Mariota could wind up being another Vince Young, I don't know what to say other than you're embarrassing yourself and should stop while you're behind. You're getting more and more ridiculous and more and more desperate to try to discredit Mariota.
You're completely laughable. Cook can't carry Mariota's jock in terms of accuracy, decision making or leadership. Who cares if he can take a snap from under center? Good grief, you're really getting moronic with your comments. You or I could learn to take snaps under center. You think a kid with the football IQ, athleticism, and talent of Mariota can't learn that? Unbelievable!
You have put an insanely illogically ridiculous amount of weight on an acquired skill. You have diminished a vastly and supremely more talented player behind a massively inferior talented player because of a skill acquired as a 20 year old. Who is, in fact, OLDER than the vastly superior talented player. It's laughable. Connor Cook will never be as good as Marcus Mariota. Regardless of how many snaps he took from under center under the watchful eye of the greatest college coaches of all time at Michigan State University. Oregon coaches suck in comparison as everyone knows. _
If you only have eyes for Amari Cooper this year, you'll discredit whomever you can. Putting Vince Young and Marcus Mariota in the same sentence is moronic unless that sentence is "I saw Vince Young and Marcus Mariota in the airport the other day". _
With the talent available at #6 I would be very comfortable moving down to # 10 and taking what is left.
Putting aside the debatable contributor part, the Jets have been in Qb hell, the only debate being whether that has been for four years or more, but more to the point continuing into the present, since that pick was wasted. I did not in any event say the Sanchez pick was the root of ALL the Jets' problems. I mentioned that pick in the context of Brad's rehash of his longstanding contention that no good comes of picking playesr in FA. The cases he mentioned were not good, but the ill effect on the team was worse from the Sanchez pick, and other poor draft picks I mentioned. I did not say all problems by any means.
Along with that being unclear, the collective bargaining agreement will not permit the Jets to sit on cap space.
thanks for the scouting report. I just am increasingly doubtful the Jets will get a chance to pick him.
