i would sign a vet and mariota, just so mariota can learn behind the vet. even if mariota is the real deal, we wont be doing anything next year or the year after or the year after that
This kind of unexplained hard nosed position is not only flat out wrong on the subject at hand. It needs to be identified as below the quality of posting we should want to have as the minimum acceptable. To be specific I am not here so much talking about Foles as these kinds of unsupported posts. I admit to occasionally posting an unsupported post, but it is because I believe I have previously spoken to the issue more than adequately. It comes out of frustration, which I intend to remember, and avoid giving way to, in the future. Foles had one of the best years in 13 I can remember, particularly interesting since he basically did it in relief of the opening day starter. He got hurt last year, but more to the point while he began the year less impressively than 13, he did so without his 13 #1 wideout, with injuries to the OL that did not play as well, and perhaps most problematic was Kelly wanting to go with a different offense that Foles was not suited for. But yeah, duh he sukd.
They can try, but they won't be persuasive. Just watch, or more accurately don't becuase you won't see it.
Yeah, I have never understood the emphatic "He sucks" with no supporting analysis. Or even wild opinion. "He sucks" because (x) and (y) and (z) or "He sucks" because his head is shaped like a light bulb. Give us SOMETHING other than "He sucks". Btw, I like Foles a lot and I'd take him on my team any day. But I'm still not trading him for the Mariota pick. _
I want Peat, but probably not at 6. He can probably be selected a bit later, so they'd have to trade down.
Why not? Do you seriously think it will take Mariota 4 years to develop, or are you saying that it's going to take that many drafts and FA periods to improve the talent level of the team? Either way, I disagree. I think Mariota sits a year, if that long, and he's ready to play at a high level. If Mac and Bowles are anywhere near as good as I think they may be, then I think the team will be competitive this year and will be a playoff contender next season. If they have Mariota, then I think they could be serious SB contender in 2017, and if things fall just right, maybe even in 2016.
You make good points, but the problem with going into the draft having to draft a player at a position makes you desperate. Other teams know that you have a desperate need, and they hold you up in trade ups. You never want to go into a draft having to draft a player at a position and never want to tip your hand to other teams. Hopefully, Mac will remedy the inequity we've seen in Jets drafting for the last 20 years or so. Hopefully, every position will be addressed in a significant fashion via the draft, and he'll use FA wisely, filling holes prior to the draft so we don't have to draft for need, perhaps bringing in some young starting-quality players, but also bringing in better depth and players who can compete for starting jobs.
Perhaps "sucks" was too strong, but I just don't think he's that good. Either because of injury or because he couldn't beat out Vick, he has yet to start every game in a season. His overall accuracy and TD to interception ratio isn't that good, and when I've seen him play, he doesn't impress me. I think he's just another journeyman QB who has a job in the NFL because there aren't enough good QBs to go around. He might have career backup potential, but I just don't see him as a quality starting QB.
Peat would be interesting. If the FO sees him as a future LT, who could also play another position on the line right away (like RT), then i'd have no problem selecting at 6. i really like Scherff as well, but I'm not sure he's a future LT. really like him as a versatile RT and G, and think he'll be successful. The LT ability is the key to selecting as high as 6 tho.
I was going to post something similar to this but you beat me to it. No way it takes Mariota 4 years to develop. I think the absolute most is 1 1/2-2 years, even that I'm not so sure about. I think more than likely it'll take around a year for MM to get acclimated to whatever scheme Chan decides to install, with an outside chance of him playing the last 2-3 games next season. Which is why I'm all for trying to beef up the OL in FA this offseason. There are some quality guys that probably wouldn't break the bank and would give us an immediate upgrade, especially at OG. Shore up the OL this offseason, draft Mariota at 6, maybe get a Jaelen Strong/DGB/Coates in the 2nd(if we let Percy go) and you have yourself a very good foundation already laid for MM when the CS decides he's ready to take the field. Just the idea of an offseason like that gives me the chills. Man, I hope it happens.
First of all I only think Foles is worthy of discussion here because of the apparent connection between where Mariota may fall to in relation to Kelly's interest in obtaining Mariota. And then whether even if other factors fell into place, the Eagles would offer an attractive enough deal. Given the odds of it coming to pass, the argument can certainly be made it's not worth all that much discussion. But if we ARE going to talk about it, let's be accurate. Foles is heading into his fourth year in the league, and just last week turned 26. Odds are he is going to be a better Qb than heretofore, and many good to very good NFL Qb's have careers where they did not really even get started until this point, being a starting Qb and all that. Yet the quoted assertion is that he's yet to start every game in any of his first three seasons. When one considers he was hurt last year, that seems like a rather odd and unpersuasive criticism. Add in that it is simply misinformation to say by any reasonable standard that he has a poor Td to interception ratio, and we can discount this post. 46 to 17 is an above average ratio, especially for a young Qb. Perhaps NC should have left off giving an "explanation."
Thats fair. I cant say Ive studied every throw Foles has made in the NFL but when I watch him play I come away thinking he is a decent QB which is something we havent had in a while lol. This past year he had a bit of a turnover problem but he was great in 2013. If we got Foles I wouldnt be ecstatic per say, but he excites me a lot more than Geno
Just between you and me, I think he gets it by game 6 his first year but to placate the "he can't play in a pro set offense" crowd, I'm saying a full year. He's a more athletic more talented Eli. _
I am one of the members here questioning Mariota's skill in relation to running a pro offense, but I can tell you this, if there is one guy that can change his game and learn it, it's Mariota. His football knowledge is exceptional and he is a very smart individual. Just having his high football IQ can play a HUGE rule in helping him mold his game into a pro style. I like Mariota, a lot. Think he's very talented. I am just worried his game won't translate. Especially the running aspect of it, which is a lot. If he's there at 6 you take him every single time, unless Winston is there also
Eli has a far stronger arm. Let's be serious here. Not to mention Eli was already a good deep ball passer in college. Not exactly one of Mariota's strengths.
My top question about Mariota, since I don't have time to follow the college game, is how well will he see the field against a pro defense? Of course I know that you won't really know that until he does, but perhaps some might have some indication from how he plays now. How quickly does he read what he's up against? Does me make intelligent and quick decisions? How often does he force it in there and fail? I am not talking necessarily about total int's. Any insights?
Arm strength is just one component of a QB. You've also dinged him compared to Matt Ryan who has a FAR weaker arm and throws a worse deep ball. So which is he? Worse than Eli? Or worse than Matt Ryan? Oh, worse than both? I get it. Amari Cooper this year and Connor Cook next year. _
