I dont think we are that far apart on this one, if Mariota is the top man on the board when we pick im not flipping tables if we go with him, in fact it would be the "same old jets" if we didn't. But i also hope somewhere in the next 2 rounds that we get someone to help keep his jersey clean (or Geno's or even Simm's for that matter cause im damn sure hoping to finally have an open competition, at least early on). And all of this heavily depends on what we do in FA. If we build a "Great Wall" before the draft then I'm ear to ear with MM in the first.
What sucks is this is the year for defensive ends and we don't need one. We won't get any of the qbs. Is there any player you think can play the 3-4 OLB at the 6th pick? If there is take that guy. Still the draft is a long way from now, there are no defensive backs or lineman that warrant a top 6 pick. Will Cooper be there at 6? This might be a trade down year. Let's see what we do in free agency first before we see what we do in the draft.
Yeah because this team is stocked with killer pass rushers, what the hell are you talking about? If the Jets can find a 2nd or 3rd round pass rusher to go with their interior players they should pull the trigger. Apparently you are as ill suited to understand what an outside end is as you are to understand a simple analogy in the English language.
Now it looks like you are trying to attack me cause you got smoked. Do you even know what a football looks like. Let's attack the new guy oh wait......I wish they didn't erase my posts from 2002-2009
after reading the first page of this thread i am completely confused. What does marcus mariota have to do with pennington?
I've been confused for the same reason but I think the people that wanted to talk about quarterbacks just disregarded the OP so it's all good
I agree with you completely. That is also another reason I think Mariota should sit for a year if we do draft him. We don't have the worst line in the league but they're certainly not the best either. I would like to get some more beef up front, regardless of who our QB is. I do think they'll upgrade the line via FA this offseason. Iupati, Boling, Franklin are all good guards that would provide an immediate upgrade at either OG position. Brick is still solid, Aboushi has some potential, and Mangold is still a beast. That's already a decent line, if we could add one of those OG's and potentially a RT(although I do think Breno is adequate) we could have a very good line.
The idea was to start a discussion about how to fix this team and not to fixate on the prospects available. If you are convinced that Marcus Mariota is the second coming of Joe Montana there is nothing I can say that will convince you that we would be better off taking a pass rusher. The point of the thread was to look at NFL players with 20 / 20 hindsight (such as Pennington) and to consider which of them would make the most sense at #6. So if Mariota is the next Pennington and Shane Ray was the next Abraham which would be better for us?
Agreed, It looks like the core of both our views points is that we need to get better at the core, from the inside out no matter who we have slingin the pig.
Not sure I can agree to this because we already know the type of players these 2 are coming out of college - Chad was the prototypical pocket passer while Marcus is a multiple of things - which makes it more complicated because of the system he would be thrown into. 20/20 hindsight? So then we must assume that Mariota will break his hand and have shoulder damage? There's no logic in drafting any player with that pre-requisite. Abraham was an injury prone under-achiever while with the Jets...should Shane Ray be factored in to perform in the same manor?
looks more and more mariota is going to be available for us at 6 (unless eagles go all out to trade up to get him). if thats the case, we must get this guy. you an build a team all you want but if you dont have a qb, you got nothing. if he's gone, i'd take Shane Ray
I'm not a fan of him, but you have a point you need a QB in this league and maybe for once we can get lucky and one pans out for us.
First: will Mariota be available. And then Mac and staff's evaluation of him. Then any available trades like to the Eagles. Would they offer Foles in a package. I doubt it because his salary for 2015 is very cheap so they might want to hold onto him. If they do draft Mariota this will change the direction of the organization. Then they have to decide if they think Mariota can start in 2015. Do they want to then sign a veteran who they will have to pay (at least 4 mil). And Geno's future. If on the board there will be a lot of media and fan pressure to draft Mariota. And if Mac doesn't and keeps the pick he will get ripped apart and you know the owner listens to this kind of stuff.
I want to talk about this draft scenario from a perspective I don't think has been mentioned on this thread. And that concerns the TIMING of the draft compared to FA, and possible trades. Since FA comes before the draft, do the Jets really take a risk and not sign a vet Qb in FA on the hope that Mariota falls to them? What if he doesn't, and they have not signed a vet Qb in FA? Who wants to rely on a trade at that point? The leverage situation gets worse as time goes on. Any team really wanting to trade has probably done so by the draft. I think this consideration means the Jets pretty much have to have addressed Qb already by draft day. That does not mean they cannot then pick Mariota if he falls to the Jets, which in fact is the scenario I think is best for them. But I do think since it is too risky to count on landing Mariota (even under the Foles for Mariota scenario), then I think the Jets will have to sign a vet Qb in FA or (less likely) do a trade.
absolutely they need to sign a FA QB prior to the draft. that certainly wouldn't prohibit them from drafting Mariota, who likely wouldn't be the starter for a period of time (maybe even all season).. can take that a step further even. ALL major holes should be addressed in FA with some sort of viable option. you should never have to depend on your draft picks making an immediate impact.
