Who said anything about drafting a WR in the first or 2nd? I said in the 3rd, 4th and 5th round there were much better options still on the board when the Jets drafted (well maybe not the 5th, I don't recall for 100% certain, but definitely in the 3rd and 4th.) I supported Idzik when he came on board, but he left the scouting department intact and the uninspired and faulty draft schematic of the last 10 years was still in place. Not once have I criticized the first two rounds of each draft, but the success of a draft isn't how well you draft in rounds 1 and or 2 but how well you draft and scout rounds 3-7.
So if Amaro was listed as a WR as opposed to a TE that wouldve made a difference? The bottom line is that we did get a pass catcher. He just plays TE instead of WR.
Anyone has a right to criticize Idzik but fairly. But not looking at every late round draft pick and saying a guy drafted in the 4th round by the Steelers was better than the guy drafted in the 4th round by the Jets. You can do that for any team. I thought he should have traded up with some of the extra picks (you can't trade the supplemental picks) or trade back into 2015 kind of like what the Patriots do. I don't think he should have drafted 12 players. There was no way you could keep all 12. And 3 guys are right on other team's active rosters which means they are NFL caliber players. He got a B after the draft and Mel is giving him a C+ a year later. This is not horrible.
Amaro was a nice pick, he was the TE in the draft that I was pulling for and wanted and I'm on record as such. But he's not an outside threat, he's not a field stretcher.
But I'm also talking about what I said on and before draft day and actually NAMED players who would be better. Big difference. I guess that Idzik was so good he immediately got snatched up by another team. Oh wait, he's unemployed.
Idzik drafted fine in the first two rounds and after that he lost the plot entirely. Acting like a decent WR could still come out of Idzik's draft last year is a joke. Anyone with half a brain would've bundled together about 4 picks onto the 3rd rounder and grabbed any of about 5 WRs and instead the moron winds up with a CB that never proved anything besides susceptibility to IR and about 5 WRs that would really stand out for the Jets if the team plays DII next year. The year before that he should've bundled 3 picks in the 3rd to move up for Warford instead he sits on his ass and drafts 3 bums in a row and not one of them can play guard between them. You just can't handle the mid/late draft strategy any worse than that idiot; so glad there is finally a real personnel GM here. At least the new guy has a chance of working out a winning roster even if he doesn't nail every pick or decision. With Idzik it would've taken divine intervention to fill up the amount of holes his incompetent ass would have tried inadequately to fill until the end of time.
He's a pass catcher. Who knows how he develops going forward but so far he looks like he could be a reliable player for years to come.
Those 2 guards started a lot of games and are NFL O-linemen. Again your strategy is after the fact. Anyone can do that. As for 2013: Milliner, Geno, 4th round pick traded for Ivory and Tommy Bohanon.
Again, he's the player i wanted for a TE. But he's not an outside threat and he's not a field stretcher. He's a complimentary piece to exploit the seams and middle of the field but you need outside threats to stretch the field and open up the seams.
and those 2 guards, one of whom I did like for the draft but were developmental players who shouldn't have been starting that quick. Just because you're starting for a bad team doesn't mean you're a good player.
After the fact? Bullshit. I was flipping out both years immediately after the second round picks were placed for the remainder of the draft, continuously. Warford slid down the board and he had no answer to react, just sits there like a bump on a log. I knew it was a grave mistake then but I didn't realize just how tragic it was, so great point I guess. Winters is a piece of shit as a player and always will be. Aboushi will probably never be an average starter, which is his ceiling and its a miracle he's that good. Last year I figured the moron would draft 3 players and burn the last 9 picks but instead he drafted 2 players and burned the last 10. Hindsight doesn't have shit to do with it. I haven't seen such a pathetic display of team management of the Jets since I was a kid in the '90s and that's saying something.
Thank god the moron traded away the 4th for Ivory. He would've drafted a backup long snapper no doubt.
The Jets O line wasn't that bad. I personally didn't like Winters but I'm not knowledgable enough to grade offensive linemen. To me Oday played well. They drafted Campbell who never played for them. So it's not like they were just starting anybody. As for Idzik, he's definitely a strange bird. He's fired and says 18 words to the press. And not one mention of him since. No interviews, etc.
Again he's a pass catcher. Isn't that what everybody was whining about all year? That we didn't get a WR? We did get a receiver he just plays TE. Who's to say he can't stretch the field or be a vertical option?
Who's to say how much better this teams prospects would be moving forward if we had Amaro and Davante Adams on the roster like we should?
A moron for trading for Ivory. I guess no credit for anything then. I guess Tommy Bohanon is a bum, too. And a 7th round pick at that. And drafting 3 o-lineman a bad strategy.? All 3 guys are in the NFL 2 still on the Jets.
Luck is the baseline for a sure-fire prospect at that position. Truth is, the draft IS a crapshoot. Even the best GM's and teams do no better than 50%. As for what QB's were available in last year's draft, I don't see a franchise QB anywhere. Carr would be the closest; he put up 21 TD's and 12 INT's playing for a dogsh*t team, and honestly I wouldn't mind having him. Bridgewater looks OK but I don't see "Franchse", same for Bortels and definitely for Manziel. Don't know how we could've done better than what we currently have in Geno. I agree that we should've taken a WR earlier. We could've had Benjamin (although I remember quite a few posters here saying they didn't want KJ b/c he was too slow), and absolutely could have had Devante Adams, Jarvis Landry or Jordan Matthews. But then again, TE really was a need for this team. Realty is you cannot...CANNOT...fully judge a draft for at least 3 years. That's a fact, and no amount of wishing or thinking otherwise will change that. Reality doesn't care about our lack of patience. 2014 doesn't look so good now, but time will tell.
Oday was the guy I liked all along, but I viewed him as a developmental pick that would take a couple of seasons (oday was in several of my mocks). Idzik is still unemployed, I looked. He won't get another GM job any time soon. He won't get an Asst GM job, he won't get a personnel job. He probably will get a job in the accounting department of a team, probably back in Seattle where he has friends.
