Of course you're saying it now after the fact. 20-20 hindsight is easy. But I don't see any great receivers after those 2. Good but not great and we did get the best tight end. What's wrong with that!
If I knew what I know now I would have traded up for Beckham. And other teams would have selected Sheldon Richardson before Idzik did at 11. But sorry it's not possible.
Ok, first off--none of what I have said on this debate is with 20-20 hindsight or talking after the fact. The year before that 2013 draft I was already looking at 2014 as the year to take the QB because I thought Teddy, Carr AND Mariota were all coming out. I thought the 2013 class was the weakest QB class I'd seen in years. IMHO. So saying my rantings and ravings this year are based on Monday Morning Quarterbacking is way off the map. And as I've always contended, the mirage of those last 4 games were the primary reason we DIDN'T take a QB in 2014 when both Teddy and Carr were sitting there for us. Looking forward, those last 4 games DID turn out to be a mirage because Geno again played like one of the worst QBs in the NFL, but that's besides the point. I'm not making my points based on what Geno did in the 2014 season--they are all based on forethought years in the making. Guessing about it no doubt, but nothing I've said is with hindsight. That it turned out to be the case is just luck on my part that I guessed right. And I get that some folks here still don't like Teddy and/or Carr, but I'm still guessing they'll be wrong and those QBs will be franchise guys for those teams. Those last 4 games of 2013 were (i) the epitome of revisionist history and (ii) the worst thing that could have happened to this franchise. I hope McCag and Bowles don't get fooled similarly by that last mirage against Miami. _
Geno was a good selection in the 2nd round but not a good choice to be Jets starter in 2013. Of course Sanchez was injured in training camp. Big mistake not bringing in someone who could start. Garrard was obviously not healthy enough to play. I'm not sold on the idea that Geno is a bust yet. I hope they bring in a good vet like Hoyer to be the starter with Geno as backup but available if injury or ineffectiveness. As for Teddy or Carr. I'd take either of them over Geno in a straight up swap. But imo they aren't going to be franchise Qbs. Maybe average to above average starters but that's at best. Carr esp to me has been highly overrated.
The trend in the NFL was to develop Qbs and not start them immediately. But that changed in recent years esp with the success of a few guys like Luck and RG3. Plus patience has worn thin in terms of performance. If a guy starts as a Qb early in his career and the performance isn't there they go in a different direction and we are seeing plenty of young Qbs who were starters and still young out of a job or now backups. Geno has about 30 starts and his last 5 were good ones. Maybe he's finally learning how to play the position. But don't count on it.
Do you think Geno has the intrinsic "smarts" to be a top NFL QB? That amorphous "football IQ"? Nice arm, can throw a beautiful ball if mechanically set, athletic, but does he impress you a guy who understands what's going on in front of him? Do you see him as a leader on that team? Because unless he has all three--talent, IQ and leadership abilities--he's not a franchise QB. I don't care about him progressing from where he is--that'd be hard not to do--in order to win a few more games. I want a guy who will win you a LOT of games. So tired of the mentality that if you surround a flawed player with talent you can "win some games". _
No, he's not a franchise Qb but to me there are only a handful in the NFL and you can win with a good starter. Qb is only one position and you don't need a Pro Bowler at Qb to win. But you do need quality and depth at other positions and a good infrastructure. So forget about aiming your entire team building strategy around the Qb position. You never know you could get someone late in the draft who could end up being good. As for Geno. Agreed he was at times horrible but so was Russell Wilson last week with 4 picks in the first half. But I saw enough improvement to bring him back but not as the appointed starter.
Unless you have an Andrew Luck going into the draft everyone else is a crap shoot as far as being a franchise Qb. I think Russell Wilson is a franchise Qb and he was a 3rd round pick. That's why I prefer signing a good vet starter like Hoyer who isn't going to be great but can play the position. Most of these other guys you're going to lose a lot of games with no guarantee they'll ever improve.
For ever Wilson there are hundreds that have failed. I can't believe Andrew Luck has become the baseline for drafting a QB early in the first round. _
Sorry but there were a number of guys still for at least the 4th round comp pick that would have been great additions and many on this board, myself included, were expounding on that fact at the time of the draft. The fact is you can't have 12 picks and wiff as badly as the Jets did, especially at WR in a draft that was DEEP in talented receivers.
Look the receiver grade is an incomplete. We still have 2 receivers on the roster from that draft. And Wr wasn't the only position. Didn't we get the best receiving tight end.
12 picks and the bragging point is got the best receiving Tightend? Idzik's drafting was overall horrible. the WR's still on the roster are going to have to shine VERY bright to outcompete the players chosen later who many on this board wanted.
Best player drafted at 11 in 2013 draft. What's your alibi for that and I know there will be one. I"ve tried to make sense to you and so have others. The draft grade is Incomplete. If in two years all of these guys are either has beens or never weres then you're right. As of right now the only guy from the 2014 draft not in the NFL is your boy's pick Tajh Boyd.
If we're judging the draft then I'd say it wasn't that good. But we still have players that we are developing so its still too early to say.
No alibi, 1 hit to how many misses on that 2013 draft? Yes the draft is incomplete, no draft can be fully graded for at least 3-4 years. But you can look at the draft during the in between years as to how they compare to the baseline as to development. But I'll say this, if any of the receivers the Jets drafted turn out to be an average NFL WR or better with the Jets or within 4 years of the draft I'll quit posting on this board. I look forward to posting for years to come.
The Jets were not looking for a top flight Wr in that draft. One of the reasons: they signed the best available FA Wr in Decker. They instead decided to beef up the secondary which has been highly criticized. They took the top safety over a Wr. And then drafted a receiving tight end which was a bigger hole on the team than Wr. As for killing them because the Steelers were able to draft better Wrs later in the draft you can criticize any team for passing on a player. 10 teams passed on Richardson why not criticize them. And drafting the best player in the 2013 draft isn't bad at 11. But guys like you refuse to take off the blinders. You hate Idzik and won't give him any credit for anything.
This guy showed some real promise in the preseason. He had something like three sacks, and yet they play Pace (5 sacks) and Babin (1 sack) during the regular season. This is another reason I'm glad Rex is gone.
I thought the Babin signing was smart as was re-signing Pace after I think a 10 sack season. Both situational players and not too expensive. Good teams thrive on these kind of signings.
