Well Pennington was the last good QB for the Jets. He was the next "Joe Montana" prior to his injuries. People loved the guy. Those players weren't bad either, I agree Brandon Sheriff is prob one of the top offensive lineman in this draft. He can play RT, LG, RG - he's got a mean attitude, and brute strength w/ good technique. He was taught at a good school. He can make this offensive line so much better.
So you think those teams won a SB because of Faneca, Ngata and Elliott? You know how many rings Robert Horry has? _
Call me crazy but I wouldn't mind trading down to team if cooper isn't there and neither QBs are there. Say trade to around 10-12 and draft Parker and get some picks to address some other needs like corner and o- line.
Q: Will the Jets look at QBs in the draft or free agency? A: Both. Unfortunately for them, the pickings are slim in both areas. I think Jets' fans need to start coming to grips with the likelihood that Geno Smith will be in the quarterback mix. I'm not saying he will be the opening-day starter... http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york-jets/
You NEVER pass up a QB as good as this one. Not for all the future pics in the world. Nothing else matters. If your guys hit the potential YOU see for them and my guy hits the potential I see for him, you NEVER pass him up. I get it. You think he sucks. Your guessing just like me. _
Why is this even an option? This is so stupid. If you have the choice to get Mariota and his ceiling is Chad Pennington, then why would you pick anywhere else? We haven't had a QB worth a damn in years. This poll is retarded.
In 1991 the Giants and Bills faced off twice. When Jumbo Elliot was injured during the regular season the Giants lost to the Bills. With a healthy Jumbo Elliot in the Superbowl the Giants beat the Bills. It amazes me how many people remember Pennington, Cherbet, and other skill players fondly but dump on guys like Elliot, Abraham, Ellis, and Faneca that were heroes for us in the trenches during the same era. Jumbo Elliot was so good that he usually lined up without the help of a tight end, hence his eligibility to catch the winning pass in the Monday Night Miracle.
All means shit if you don't have a QB. Name me a super bowl winning team in the last decade that won a super bowl with a nobody at QB?
The point I was making is that's a horribly misguided thought given your thought experiment, regardless of the fact that you picked a terrible example in Pennington because he was meant to be a top 5 QB if healthy for years and years, no questions asked. We can quibble all day if he was meant to be #5, #3 or #1 during any given year but there's no way you pass that up for anything. Especially not a pass rush when the DLine is already stacked. Should the team draft Matt Ryan? Shit it's a start put a good enough team around him you've got a shot. It doesn't matter who you pick, if it's a decent QB you have to go with that all day. Chad was way better than that besides.
Nobody knows who any of these kids are going to become but if one of them can realistically be a franchise QB you never pass that up if you don't have a franchise QB already.
The FLOOR of a decent 1st round QB should be Pennington, not the CEILING lol! Pennington would have been a decent 3rd round QB...he was an average QB and a decent stop gap, but I would hope the Jets' new regime would aim higher than that! Mariota would be a questionable pick at the bottom of the 1st round, and at #6 he's a flat out reach. Let some other desperate franchise lunge for an overrated Mariota in a weak QB draft!
So you arbitrarily assign Danny Shelton as an elite DT, and Mariota as a slow footed cerebral QB with one shoulder. I find the premise of this thread to be comical, at best.
You make it seem like Pennington isn't a good long term choice. If you're saying his career will be marred significantly by injuries then he's not. But he's an accurate QB, a leader and will give your team a chance to win many games including playoffs as long as he is starting. A top LT is also a crucial component and this team needs a top OG too, but I'll take Pennington with Brick at LT over Geno with Jumbo Elliot at LT. That's not even close
I don't think anyone is dumping on them, they're just not a better option than a good QB for this team.
At least someone else sees it my way. I should have picked a good not great QB that did not play for the Jets. Maybe Bernie Kosar would have been a better choice for this audience. It may not have made a difference, despite finding Vinny and Penny back to back my fellow Jets fans think only of Geno and Sanchez as the alternatives to Mariota.
I had to pick Scherff because he was the only OL in the poll. While I do like the idea of picking a QB till you find your guy I would be fine with picking up one of the QB prospects early in the second or trade up into the first, sign Iupati and draft OL at 6. Then you get a Hoyer, Bradford type guy to compete with Geno while your rook develops behind a solid Oline. Ivory and Spiller with a beast Oline would be scary.
Over a three year span we could probably find a very good QB. Finding one this year that can win right away will be much more difficult.
Oh yeah, I see Clemmings. Still I made my point. I'm just saying OL. Don't know enough about the prospects to pick one over the other.
