I agree with you about Glennon. But I really think Geno can play. Mac and Bowles will let us know. I will take their word for it.
Disclaimer: I am not a Geno fan. I just don't like what is out there in the free agent market or draft. Committing to a long term solution at qb before this season starts could be another fatal mistake.
I am with you, but even if he comes around with a new offense my concern is the horrible inconsistency.
In order to be a good NFL QB Geno is going to have to remake himself. He's going to have to play under center at least half the time. He's going to have to become much better at making his first and second reads. He's going to have to trust his reads enough that he'll throw the ball and not hold it a split-second too long. He's going to have to become a much more vocal leader in the huddle and on the sidelines and in the locker room. He's much too quiet to be an effective leader. The QB cannot be a brooding presence on the sidelines, spending all his time collecting his thoughts and that's what Geno does. Could he do all of that? Sure. I'll believe it when I see it. He's caught a major break with Chan Gailey coming to town. Gailey won't let him get away with being the solo QB.
I like Matt Moore a lot. I think he could be a good fit for where this team currently is at QB. Have a genuine QB battle with Geno and let the best man win. There's a better opportunity for him to beat out Geno over staying in Miami and continuing to sit behind Tannyhill...
The Fins believe that Moore can win some games for them if Tannehill gets hurt. I'm expecting them to re-sign him at about what they paid this year: $5.5M or so. Backup QB in Miami is like paradise.
Like Glennon, Moore is another talent-deficient QB. There is a reason he was passed up for a rookie qb. Sure he can hold a team above water for a few games here and there, but not starter level talent.
Glennon got a raw deal in Tampa, I'd absolutely bring him in. I think he could be a "solid" starting QB. Lovie Smith had some kind of obsession with McCown, who was always a 35 year old nothing special QB.
I think that it is in the nature of young players to be inconsistent. I saw as lot of David Carr, Teddy Bridgewater and Matt Stafford this year and I would describe them all that way. I think that because it's the Jets we expect the learning curve to be a straight line. The new coaching staff has the film and the player. It's their call.
I agree with this. It's also Derek Carr. I am optimistic about Gailey having the time to develop an offense that fits Geno. Marty might be a guru at the west coast offense, but without the right tools to run it the offense was lost. Geno never looked comfortable running that scheme. Quitting on Geno before at least some sample size of his 3rd year growth and chance with a guy who is known to be a boon for qbs would be a mistake.
The thing about those 3 is that they have pretty solid mechanics and footwork and with Stafford that really doesn't even matter since he has such elite arm talent. It's one thing to have to endure the normal learning curve, it's another to deal to have a guy who still struggling with the fundamentals of the position.
So let me get your logic straight here: Geno does not deserve a chance in his 3rd year under a new offensive coordinator because he was drafted in the second round? IMO I think Mariota busts.
No, he should not be in the words of Big Mac be "anointed" as the starter as he was nothing more than a second round draft pick. He is though welcome to compete for the job. Hopefully the guy he would be competing against is Mariota the bust.
I agree with this. I just saying that he has shown some "flashes" and does have a good arm with good accuracy at times. I think that we need to see what a creative offensive mind can do with him before we do something stupid like pay one of those very average free agent qb's more than they are worth. Glennon is a good idea though as he is relatively young and has a fair amount of experience as a starter.
He was passed over for a rookie QB that was taken 8th overall in the draft, not a second day pick. The Dolphins rolled the dice and made the decision to go with Tannehill over Moore and suffer the miscues that most rookie QB's commit. IMO, the gamble has paid off - good for them. And all of the guys that will be FA's have warts on them or they wouldn't be available. I am under no pretense that Moore is going to miraculously turn into a Pro Bowl QB, but I think that he can play enough to be a viable challenge to push Geno for the starters job in camp or at the very least provide stability if Geno struggles or goes down with injury.
I think Gailey will make it simpler for Geno. But Geno with one or two reads on most plays will still have to eliminate his tendency to backpedal when he is in trouble, to, as you say, hold the ball too long, and to carry the ball like a loaf of bread when he runs. And he must run. I was looking at Geno's year, and 13 INTs in 14 games is not god-awful for a second year guy out of an Air Raid offense. It is these other issues, pocket presence etc., that kill Geno. I do not trust him. But I never trusted Boomer either, and he had a long career.
It's not the errors of commission that killed Geno last year, although there were many of those. It was the errors of omission. He made the wrong read often. He failed to throw the ball at the right moment often. That's why the Jets offense just died for most of the year. Playing QB in the NFL is one of the hardest things to do in professional sports. You have to see the whole field from the moment you break the huddle until the moment the play is over. You have to make decisive accurate throws. You have to do that with 300 lb guys bearing down on you in under 3 seconds. There's no shame in not being good enough to do that. That's just the reality for 95% of the guys who have ever tried to play QB in the NFL. At this point it looks very much like Geno is in that 95%. Nothing that he has done so far suggests that he will make it into the 5% good enough to stay on the field, let alone the 1% good enough to make a real impact. When you're the QB you have to get 7 several times a game, at least 3 times against a good defense. No Jet QB has been able to do that since Favre in 2008 and nobody on the roster right now is likely good enough to do that. I'd be really happy if Geno made the leap to becoming a good NFL QB but I'm not hopeful.
I don't HATE Glennon. But given our OC and situation if we want to bring someone in depending who is available I actually wouldn't mind Ryan Fitzpatrick to hold the fort until we can upgrade and let Geno learn on the bench.
