1000% correct As I have posted several times, every team with an overall winning record over the last decade or so has had a top 10 ranked QB on its roster during that time (except Baltimore and Flacco isn't far off).
My point was that Woody seems like a bumbling (rich) idiot and I'm glad he wasn't the one doing the interviews. The new crew could still suck but listening to woody speak makes me cringe.
I'm so glad we have a GM that thanked his mom for doing his job for him and reads a prepared script for his introductory speech. So refreshing!
Ur an idiot.... 5 year plan? They've been here a week they need to evaluate the roster and contracts. Stfu Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I see your point but it's apples (QBs) and oranges (non-QBs). Yes, there are no more 6 yr mega deals and that's the problem. With six years, even if it's a lucrative contract you could still bring a guy along slowly. Now all the rookie contracts are 4 years. All the guys listed above are non-QBs except Bortles. And guess what? Bortles is a starter! The difference is the learning curve QB vs non-QB is huge. Teams need to find out if their QB is "the one" sooner. It's still a lot of money to pay a guy to sit on the bench because at the 3 year mark of that contract, teams have to decide to pony up or cut bait. If you want to keep the guy, it's going to cost a lot more that 5M per year. Now, if you draft a QB in the top half of the draft, you pretty much have no choice but to play him.
Why? It's not over, and Bowles and/or McCagnan may ultimately fail, but imo the process cannot be faulted this time. Wolf is one of the greatest GMs in the history of the NFL. While I've never thought much of Casserly, he is on the NFL's Leadership Development Council (or whatever it's called) that is responsible for identifying potential HCs and GMs and helping them to develop. Woody couldn't have done a better job of getting guidance in this process. In addition, he evidently pretty much stepped back, let them do the work, and listened to their suggestions. IMO that's a great sign that he's learning that he doesn't know crap, and is turning to people who do. Bowles seems like an excellent HC candidate. His football IQ is supposedly off the charts, his players love him, he did a great job with Phoenix's D and he is more of a disciplinarian than Rex and will hold players accountable. How good a HC he will be remains to be seen, but if I were a gambling man, I'd bet that he succeeds. I feel a LOT more confident in him than I ever felt in Rex. As far as McCagnan goes, with any first time GM it's anyone's guess as to how he will do. Based on everything I've heard and read about him, he knows personnel and scouting. He also supposedly understands how to put together a roster. That's at least a BIG step in the right direction over Idzik and Tanny. Again, I feel a lot more confident about him than I ever did about Tanny or Idzik. Only time will tell.
I understand what you're trying to say, but let's be honest, how long did it take us to figure out Geno wasn't the guy? A year? A year and a half? 4 years is plenty of time to determine whether a QB has "it" or not. We could sit Mariota for a year and start him the next if we feel he's ready. Or halfway through the year, or the year after, whatever it may be. Even if he only starts the last 2 years for us, IMO that's plenty of time to see what he's made of. My point was that even if we take Mariota and he doesn't work out, his cap figure isn't going to destroy us for the next 6 years. We'd be paying him, at most, 5.6 mil a year for 4 years. To me, that's not bad at all if you feel he could be your franchise QB. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I disagree. Will there be GMs and HCs who will rush a rookie QB on the field because of the shorter contracts or amount they're being paid? Yes, undoubtedly, because history has taught us that there there are a lot of incompetent, moronic GMs and HCs in the league. Let's face it, football players and coaches in general are not the sharpest pencils in the box. That said, any GM or HC who has any intelligence at all won't rush a rookie QB onto the field when it's obvious that that rookie QB needs to sit for a year or two while he works on adapting to an NFL-type offense, working on footwork, etc. I truly believe that both Bowles and McCagnan are smart enough not to make that mistake. By all accounts Mariotta needs to sit for a year. If we're lucky enough to get him in the draft, I don't believe that they would rush him onto the field and harm, if not ruin, any chances he had for success. They've seen what happened with both Sanchez and Geno being rushed onto the field. It's McCagnan's job to bring in a vet FA QB to either start or push Geno into playing better so Mariotta could sit on the bench and learn. If Tanny and Idzik had had a clue of how to do their job, they would have secured a vet FA QB so that Sanchez and Geno didn't have to play their rookie season. If Rex had had a clue, he would have pushed both to secure a vet FA QB so he didn't have to start a rookie QB. But Rex was so cocky and full of bravado (as well as shit) that he predicted the Jets would win the SB with a rookie QB.
This is 100% correct. I guess the big question is are we in win now mode? Or are we trying to rebuild? Personally, I think it's the latter. Judging by the presser transcript both Mac and Bowles feel that way too. I could be wrong about this, but I feel like something was said along the lines of "we have a lot of work ahead of us" or something similar. To me that signifies that they understand we aren't ready to compete for the playoffs next year, and we aren't. So let's go get our QB of the future, sit him during our rebuild year, and see what he has the next season. Or even towards the end of his first year if you feel he's ready. Just please, for the love of God, don't force him on the field before he's ready. We've seen that happen twice now over the past few years and it hasn't worked out well. I agree that Mac and Bowles both seem like great football minds, so I truly think that if they feel Mariota isn't ready, they won't play him. That's my hope anyway, and at this point it's all I have. LOL! Yeah, but Geno is a no-brainer (no pun intended.) Remember what happened with Sanchez? Two decent years and after the third doubt crept in. The Jets wanted to dump him and bring in Peyton. When that didn't work out, they re-signed Sanchez to a big contract. Another bad year and everyone was screaming about how stupid it was to re-sign him. I agree with you, rookie QBs should not start, unless they are Andrew Luck. All I'm saying is that the economics of the current CBA make it tough to not start them.
It's a lot easier to not start them now than it was before this new CBA though. That's all I was trying to say. If we do get him, he isn't going to destroy our cap. Plus he'll have 4 years, 3 if we sit him for his first year, to prove what he's got. You said it yourself, around year 3 is when we finally started to see what Sanchez actually was. If you were expecting some one that will flower you with bravado and BS promises from day one you need to move your aim to the Buffalo PC. Nothing wrong with what the GM said. It was an introductory PC to get to know the man and his perspective, not to get a long term plan out of him for Pete's sake.
2 years to see what he's got. You have to decide whether he's a keeper at the end of year 3 otherwise he's a free agent. That's a pretty tight window to decide whether you have your franchise QB or start back over at square 1.
Not necessarily. The coaches see him every day in practice. They see his work ethic, talent level and whether he's making the necessary changes and improving. I believe that in most instances they can tell before he ever sees the playing field in a game whether they think he's the answer or not. How many years did Aaron Rodgers sit behind Favre? Think the GB staff had no idea about Rodgers?
My answer to the question you asked about rebuilding or win now mode? I think it's both, while there is some rebuilding to do, the Jets have enough pieces in place that if the key positions like QB, OL and CB are addressed correctly, this team can make a run at the playoffs next year. As they address these areas, it will have either a negative or positive chain reaction. If addressed correctly, it strengthens the foundation that is currently in place and will help sustain long term success. If not, get ready for the billboard guy to start his fire Mac and Bowles campaign.
Where's Terry Tate, Office Linebacker, when you need him? "YOU WANT TO SNORE...I'MA POUND YOU SOME MORE! WOOO WOOOOO" Can't believe that guy asleep in the front row...LOL. And...yeah...what's with the funeral flowers? Odd...just odd....
Don't think they did until he got on the field and played in a real game. There's only one true test of a QB in the NFL and that's game tested. The list of QBs that earned high marks and praise in practice is long, the list of those who become franchise QBs is short.
