To be fair, Sanchez could not shine vs the Lions or Jaguars. Sanchez had his chances, he should not have been above coming in with the 2nd stringers in a preseason game to get his reps. All backup Qbs go in that moment.

Sanchez played very well that preseason actually outside of a play or 2.

"But he also did some great things. The last five games this season he was the seventh-rated passer in the league. He had a perfect passer rating in his last game at Miami. The potential and ability is there.”

It doesn't appear like he slammed Geno that much.

No. They reset at the end of each year. Players have a certain amount of years they can be practice squad eligible too. I can't remember the exact numbers. Then you return to training camp and fight for a spot again. If eligible, you can make the practice squad if you don't make the 53 man roster.

Struggled for a good chunk of that Jaguars game until Jacksonville took their starters out by the end of the half. Sanchez even got some 3rd quarter action vs those 2nd stringers.

Didn't look good at all vs the Lions.

To be even more fair: He completely outplayed Geno Smith. Smith was an embarrassment vs the Giants. What does Rex do? Throws his best QB option to the wolves. Sickening.

I remember a bad sequence at the end of the half vs. Jax but at Det he obviously had the bad 1st drive but after that looked great. Overall that preseason he looked good- remember he was on his 3rd system in 3 years. If there was an actual competition he would have easily won it and Geno would have been on bench learning instead of starting.

But Mark technically wasn't the "backup" at the time - Rex should have been thinking more clearly, putting a potential starting QB in the lineup w/ 3rd string offensive lineman. You give Simms those snaps if anything. That Giants game ruined everything. It's amazing how one decision can trickle down and do so much harm to a football team.

I think if they are signed to a "futures contract" then they remain property of the team until some point before rosters are set and can't be poached.

    But don't quote me.

What wolves? That's hindsight to think Sanchez was going to get hurt that given time. Who called Marvin Austin injuring Sanchez? That's bad luck.

Do the Rams deserve flack for Sam Bradford losing his season in a preseason game?

Both Qbs stunk but at least Smith had an excuse in losing time due to an injury. Sanchez did nothing to separate himself is what I am saying and he has more years in the league than Geno.

You have to return back to the same team of free to fight for a spot on any roster?

Rex wanted to give Smith a try vs a 1st team D before deciding anything, he stunk vs the Giants. But I don't understand why Sanchez is above coming in with the 2nd stringers, he was the backup in the game. Geno came in with the same group vs Detroit and nothing serious happened.

It was terrible luck, that's not on Rex or anybody.

Not drafting a traditional QB is fine in Rex's mind but trading up and drafting a 1 year starter in college as his 1st overall pick in the new regime and allow them to start 15 games(Clemens got one of those starts due to injury)? Perfectly okay to Rex Ryan.

    Rex baffles my mind sometimes.

It was bad luck, but I think it was a bad decision to throw Mark out there with those offensive lineman who can't block for shit. I don't think those lineman were 2nd string - even so the game was in the 4th QTR - why not put Simms out there? Idzik wanted to see more of Sanchez and I think Rex really wanted to win that game.

I think Rex was pissed at Idzik and he wanted Mark to lead them down for a TD to say "FU" to Idzik, Mark's our starter.

LOL...I here this argument a lot from Sanchez "detractors". Let's pretend Sanchez was our second string QB period. The truth is competition or no competition you really should not be putting your 1st or 2nd string QB in the 4th quarter of of ANY pre-season game; they are BOTH too valuable to the team. Your second string QB should not the treated in the same way as other second stringers at other positions. There is a reason why they get red jerseys in training camp too. Bottom line Rex/Idzik, whomever, was a fucking MORON for putting him in the game.

Pretty sure you are signed with same team. Futures contracts.

I am not a detractor just to clear the air, I think Sanchez was a scapegoat for much of the team's deficiencies in 2012 but games like the Titans one are indefensible.

You go in expecting your backup lineman to go and block backup defensive players and keep the QB up right. Anybody can get hurt, it was a fluke injury. Does Sanchez not get rep time/more than a series or two in game 4 then if he's going to be the Day 1 starter? Do you allow Geno Smith to go in with this same OLine game 4 and is it suddenly okay if Smith sustained the same injury Sanchez did behind the same OLine?

If you really "needed to see more" from your 4 year starter, you put him behind the 1st string in game 4 for 1-2 series max. Then you hand it over to the 3rd string QB like most coaches with half a brain do. No competent coach or GM plays their 1st or 2nd string QB in the 4th quarter of a preseason game; that's 3rd string QB territory.

Ideally you would not want Geno or Sanchez to have to play in the 4th preseason game. I believe Geno ended having to play game 4. Because Sanchez got hurt and we had to go with Geno, a very raw rookie that needed reps. If the bonehead decision was not made the week prior, Simms plays that entire game.

Given Geno's hand injury wiping out playing time including missing game 2 vs JAX, it was important to give him a chance vs a 1st string defense. It failed vs the Giants but he still needed to get some time in game 4, regardless as a backup to Sanchez or starter Week 1. Geno was behind Sanchez not for his play but for an injury, I don't blame the coaching staff(If Idzik was apart of that) for wanting to at least let Smith catchup there, especially given the season prior, the Jets had to bench Sanchez for McElroy before Greg got concussed down the stretch. They wanted a backup who has had snaps and reps and if that was Geno, that would be him.

I won't hold it against the staff for putting Mark in, he did nothing to seperate himself in TC or in preseason to have him not get 1-2 drives vs the Giants. I might have if anything thrown him in earlier, like to start the 3rd quarter and have 1 drive with the 1st team before taking everybody out besides Sanchez to get 1 more drive. That was probably the biggest mistake that was made, Sanchez should have gotten 1 drive with the 1st team to open the 3rd qtr, especially given Smith's struggles that game.
