P.S. But I do recognize that he's done a lot of great things post NFL and, as another poster noted, became a small college coaching hero. I think that they actually built a statue to him -- presumably without a backwards baseball cap :) -- at the school where he coached post-Jets.

P.P.S. Also remember hearing Freeman McNeil air some dirty laundry about him on WFAN one time -- maybe in interview before 2009 or 10 championship games? If I remember correctly he wasn't happy about overall preparation under Walton and believed that he had a bias towards undersized, limited, but scrappy players (like Walton himself had been) and that this why his Jets teams often got worn down and blew games late. May just be one ex-player's sour grapes but his opinion probably deserves more weight than any of ours. :)

I was aware of those picks, but again the overall responsibility for maintaining the roster is at least to some extent on the HC, either by commission or omission. Walton had input, I believe, on the roster. Back then as now it is something of a black box who is actually, and proportionally, responsible. But I am sure the scouts back then did not have sole discretion regarding the roster.

It was Maguire. I remember it like it was yesterday, and I still want to punch his lights out to this day.

I do appreciate it. I wanted him to succeed as much anybody. It was awful tho this year watching that. It was like watching the Kottite Jets. It was sickening. Both sides of the Rex debate have valid points. But there's a lot to criticize Rex for as a HC. I like Rex I don't dislike him. Walton wasn't some idiot and it's demeaning to Rex to compare him. I'm not the only one making the comparison.

Joe Walton had a great football career, and was a top OC. Rex don't have it over him. Not for me anyway

Michael's and Parcells got there too. Walton should've. He had that game won. The Jets have gotten close several times. That's what's so frustrating. If Herm doesn't take that knee in Pittsburg he gets there.

awful year this year no doubt. Rex did a poor job this year but look at that roster.

what does Joe's career have to do w/ anything? as an OC he made 1 title game, as an assistant Rex won a SB and as a DC made a title game. Rex is better in every way.

But. Who cares? But... if Gastineau didn't rough Kosar we mighta won the Superbowl. Like Rex had nothing TO do with the Kottite like demise. Like Rex had something to with the Baltimore D. The D here went steadily down from his first year. The crash and burn was worse under Rex than Joe. The same thing happened to both of them HERE. In the end fail. Rex getting close here means nothing to me now. I really hope we drub him unrelentingly from here on in. Joe Walton was a good football man. I don't care who might be a better coach. Every time Rex boasted about the Baltimore D when he was here I smh. Luck has as much to as anything for Rex here as a HC.

Now I'm a Rex Hate Troll? That's rich.

If we're using consecutive AFC Championship appearances as a measuring stick, John Madden and Marv Levy must be the twice as good as Rex.

Rex wasn't the GM planning for 2015 and beyond while ignoring 2014.

Rex was light years better than Walton who inherited a young SB favorite.

I get your point but no way the Jets were going to the SB that year (86). Simply too beat up......they would have run out of gas out in Denver and the Giants would have crushed them anyway sorry to say. The Sep/Oct version of that team was SB quality but it fell apart badly.......

Walton's relationship with Todd changed when he became the head coach and it affected his play. A lot of costly turnovers cost the Jets 4 or 5 close games that year if I remember correctly. Midway through the season the two were not even on talking terms........Todd was traded away that offseason as damaged goods and although O'Brien was an adequate replacement the rest of the team - mainly the OL and DL- began to age shortly after.

They had a ton of injuries that year, still should have made the title game and would have had chance vs. Den but NYG would have killed us.

He had TO issues his entire career even when he was "good". I would assume it's not a confidence booster when you help a team reach a title game and the team spends a 1st rd pick on his replacement a few months later.

Wasn't that the strike shortened year?

Way back then, Todd seemed the perfect storybook replacement for Namath.

Stuffing Steve Serby in a locker was the cherry on top.

the title game app was in strike shortened year.

In 4 career playoff games Todd threw 4 TDs and 12 INTs.

    Any good punts mixed in?

It's slightly shocking how few good quarterbacks we've had...especially for a major market.

    Maybe it's us.

haha, I don't recall but maybe. Not all TOs are created equal but 12 INTs in 4 games isn't good under any circumstances.

I remember Paul Maguire jinxing the rest of the Jets season by saying they will not win another game this year. Of course they bought into it and didn't win another game.
