No new Head Coach or GM would put their eggs in a 2nd Round QB who has proven to be a bad player's basket, but he is doing a good job at doing the best he can to get the most out of him. For that, I am happy. You never know if the Jets will draft a QB, sign a vet, etc, so this is definitely the right way to talk at the moment.
I think you are reading WAY too much into it. Geno Smith is presently the starting QB and of course Bowles is going to get questions on the starting QB. He did a great job of not telling us/the media anything at all by adding the "if" regarding Geno Smith and yet still saying good things about him. There's nothing to take away from this press conference regarding his plan for the QB position and that's both a good thing and to be expected since he's hardly been on the job a week and a lot could happen come september
I just think he would have worded his comments differently if he did not think Geno was going to be a part of his future plans. I think he would have said something like "we will evaluate the QB position like all other positions, look at free agency and the draft, etc" instead of saying " if Geno's our guy going forward, we have to get some people around him and do a lot of things better, and Chan is outstanding at that." That's a very specific way to answer the QB question; he didn't have to talk so much about Geno specifically if he didn't like the guy. He also added that Geno was a "great college QB", suggesting that he too would have drafted him if he was with the Jets then. He just said way too much about Geno to make me believe he's not in his future plans......but hey, it's all speculation on our part, 100 people can watch that press conference and come away with 100 different ways of viewing it.
They both stated that they were going to finish putting the staff together and look at film and based on that film study, they would have a better idea of how to move forward. When they see the film on smith it's going to be clear to them, Chan, Bowles and Mac, that they will need to upgrade the position. I did enjoy the PC, it was real, and professional, no pep rally speech, outlandish promises or defiant comments about other teams. The one thing I did not like about TB was his comment about CB, it seems he runs a scheme that relies on good CB play, I was hoping we were not going to build around the CB position but it looks like we are heading down that road again. Not saying we don't need one, because we do, I just did not want the next HC to need an elite CB for his scheme to work.
I guess I disagree. I thought he basically left the door open for anything at QB The only time I thought he was specific about personnel was when he talked about the cornerback position and how it is important in his defense. Basically an acknowledgement that they will be getting new corners
I didn't see the presser, but based on your comments, I don't see where he was intimating that Geno is the team's starter. I think he knew that until the Jets are able to draft a franchise QB, he needs an OC who can get the most out of whomever the starting QB is, be it Geno, Fitzpatrick, Moore, Henne or whomever. Any of those guys is mediocre and would benefit from Gailey. He was being smart and not ruling out Geno. He also knows that for any QB to succeed he has to have talent around him and a sound OL. The fact that he said that Gailey knows how to run the football may be a clue that the Jets won't be passing as much as many of us thought when we first heart that Gailey was Bowles' choice as OC.
First: Geno is a lot better than Ryan Lindley. Second: don't expect Mac to spend the whole 40 mil which is what some of you want him to do and Third: you don't need a franchise Qb to win.
Perhaps you're right, but I think you're reading too much into the fact that he mentioned Geno. He had to since Geno has started most of the games the last two years. He would have been the white elephant in the room if not mentioned. I think he's going to give Geno a chance to compete for the job, but I definitely think they will be bringing in a vet to compete and as insurance. Geno has talent and with the flashes of excellent play, he has to be given every chance to develop, but I don't think Big Mac or Bowles will be content to just "hope" that he will develop into a consistent quality starter. I believe that a vet will be signed and if they get a chance to draft a QB they like, they will.
i've been saying this for awhile. every D coach in this league is concerned about their CB situation. it was not just a 'Rex thing' like so many on this board seemed to think. there is a reason CB's are catching up to DE's as the highest paid defensive position. if you have a weakness there, it is the easiest thing to exploit, and will be attacked by opposing offenses. to offset that, you have to provide help, and that reduces the numbers game and flexibility in how you can call your defense. if your entire secondary is weak, as ours was this season, you are fucked from jump. cannot mask an entire secondary, even with strong Dline play.
Yes you do. In order to win consistently over a period of years, the most IMPORTANT thing you need is a franchise QB. Could you win a few games here or there with a middle of a pack guy? For a year, sure. If EVERYTHING else falls into place. Get summarily dumped on the road in a WC game every year like Andy Daulton? That's not what I want this franchise to aspire to. It's a new day, it's a new future, let's try get our franchise QB. _
I thought it was good and his comments are what you would expect from a person that was just hired. I really think he will go after Matt Moore, they have a good relationship and worked great together in Miami. Geno will be on the bench and the dog killer will be lookin for work.
Idk if Milliner can stay healthy, but if he can I think he has the potential to be a very good CB within the next year or two, maybe even a shutdown corner. Not expecting any miracles from Pryor but he seemed to show some progress down the stretch and he should be a passable starting SS hopefully with a view to improve from there in year 3. It will take a bit of luck to keep Milliner on the field the next couple years but if it works out I think the secondary is one solid starting CB and one real good FS from being a very strong unit. Could also look at it the other way and bring in a top corner and then a solid FS, and that would have the advantage of retaining a #1 corner on the roster even if Milliner ends up on IR for the 2nd year in a row. That would go a long way towards preventing the year from going down the toilet if it happened. It should be easy enough to bring in a good or top end CB judging from this year's FA pool. FS probably doesn't have as many options but hopefully the new GM grabs the best available FS from FA and that player turns out to be good enough to fill the requirement. The main thing I'm going to be looking for from Maccagnan when FA starts is how he approaches FS. I've seen enough of Landry to know that he isn't good enough in pass pro to be out there with Pryor. Since the team isn't parting ways with Pryor at this time that makes Landry the odd man out so you either cut him or keep him on the roster to provide depth if Pryor falters but regardless the position needs to be upgraded. With this much cap space there is no question so there should be no reason to stick with a so so starter like Landry who is a plus player against the run but gets consistently torched in pass pro. As long as there is a high end FA signed at FS or CB and a solid starter signed at the other position and a high end WR/Julius Thomas and/or OL is brought in on offense that will demonstrate to me that the new GM isn't going to settle for mediocrity and can accurately assess the team needs and is willing to make decisive and aggressive moves to fill those needs when possible. Other than hitting on a QB in the 1st round, that would be the biggest improvement that could be given to this franchise at the start of another transitional era.
Point number 2 could be correct, because the jets have to spend a certain percentage of the cap money this year, I think all teams have to spend 89% of cap money, technically once they hit that number they don't have to spend anymore. If that's what PCL is referring to.
