By the way, why are we waxing poetic about Joe Walton?

    Maguire was a dick.
In my opinion, he started all the Jets hate that lasts to this day
I'll never forget the time (I think it was Jets Bills '99) he made fun of the way Flutie's kid looked on camera
Someone had to tell him that the child was autistic.

Thought about the '86 team and their playoff loss after watching Green Bay piss away the game on Sunday. The Jets blew a 10 point lead with four minutes remining in the game. The ingriedients that cost us that one? 1. Calling a QB sneak that lost yardage. But in 1986, that was considered a sack and the clock stopped like a time out when the QB was sacked inside two minutes. 2. A bad pass intereference penalty on a rookie CB (Davlin Mullin?) bailing out Cleveland 3. A bad roughing the passer call on Mark Gastineau bailing out Cleveland 3. Another pass interference call deep in Jets territory4. A missed FG and very conservative play calling on overtime

10-1. I believe that was the same year Jimmy the Greek predicted the Jets would lose their next 5 games because he felt they were over rated. There was some talk in the press that we could have a Jets vs. Giants SuperBowl. Being young & stupid, I was so confident the Jets were gonna be there but felt the Giants had no shot. Bears were so dominant the year before, thought there were gonna turn it on and earn a second trip to the SB. Jets vs. Bears was my predicted SB when the Jets were 10-1

In that era, the Jets vs. Dolphins games were so damn exciting that your adrenaline would be pumping long after the game ended.

    edit:
Just realized I was wrong from reading other posts in this thread. For some reason, I thought it was Jimmy the Greek that predicted the 5 losses in a row.

That Monday night game against the Broncos was my first live NFL game. I am pretty sure Elway was hurt and didn't play.

If I remember correctly, Walton later became the OC for the Steelers. I remember a sign shown during a game that read "Hey J_E. Where's the O?"

Another fun fact Rex Ryan is the only coach in NY Jets history to reach the AFC title game two years in a row .Love the Rex Hate Trolls.By the way this thread is a perfect example of why a guy with two posts shouldn't be able to make a thread

Didn't he say the Jets wouldn't win another game the rest of the season? I remember being real pissed at him that day. Turned out to be right for the regular season.

You're probably too young to remember this but MacGuire's claim to fame was while punting he kicked his upback Roger Byrd in the throat and he swallowed his tongue and almost died on the field at Shea in the late 60's

Walton took over a very talented team and ran it into the ground. Sure it took a few years, but the trajectory was fairly constant. Classic case of the Peter principle, he was actually an above average OC who apparently could not manage the overall team roster over time.

If you switch OC to DC you just described Rex Ryan and Herm Edwards.

Precisely. He sure did. Not right away, but let's just say he sucked at roster management. For an OC it was criminal the way he let the OL decline.

The other thing about Walton is the legend that his offense was too complicated for an airhead like Marino, which was why they passed him by for the more cerebral Kenny O. Now I loved Kenny O, mind you, but fuck, come on.
