Granted we have much MUCH bigger, more essential problems to deal with than running back. Moreover, we're only just shedding ourselves of a coaching staff with the fundamental belief that a running game is more essential than a strong passing game in what is now a very obvious pass happy league. But watching the championship games this past weekend reminded me of the value of a dominant run game. Now I know the real takeaway from those games is that arguably four of the top five quarterbacks in the league were the last guys standing but its clear they all benefit from great running backs.

Curious to know if you are satisfied with an Ivory-Powell backfield moving forward, or it's something to look at in the offseason. I think one of the overlooked Idzik (although probably more so Ryan) failures is the addition of Chris Johnson. Didnt bring anything to the table, save for a game or two, and took away meaningful snaps from Powell.

With Gailey running the O I can see Ivory being cut honestly, money better spent elsewhere.

Go with Powell and a rookie RB as a 1-2 Punch.

The funny thing about the bold is that technically it should be Ivory-Johnson, as CJ is the one still under contract next year while Powell is the FA. However Ivory-Powell is more likely than Ivory-Johnson.

I wouldn't mind if the RB depth looked as follows next year:

    1. Chris Ivory
    2. Jay Ajayi
    3. Ty Montgomery

Some of you guys act like the spread is the only offense Gailey knows.

Tell your "Pass Happy" league to the Seahawks who are about to become a Dynasty from Running the Ball and playing elite defense.Rex had the right idea just wasn't able to manage the roster and keep a good team together.

If were gonna get a guy through the draft Id hope we target either Melvin Gordon or Ameer Abdullah. Gordon has more of a lead back look to him so chances are a team in the 20's will scoop him up.

Even though there seems to be mutual interest between us and Spiller I dont think thats a smart route to go.

Ivory and Abdullah would be a real nice combo next year though. I think Powell is best suited for a 3rd RB role.

    Are you serious?

Ivory is only being paid $2 million next year. Cutting him would create almost half of that in dead space.

There is a 0% chance that Ivory gets cut in the off-season unless he is injured or retires.

didn't say that but he's not gonna tread very far away from his core principles. Ivory's biggest weaknesses as we know are pass protection and catching out of the backfield. Now he can be our workhorse but going towards a ZBS I think we look for an alternative

Core principles…lol? You do realize that Gailey coached offense before BUF, right?

LOL well duh, you dont think I looked into this.

Look I'd love it if we keep our power run game and mixed in a better passing attack around it, I'm not saying we should cut Ivory just saying I wouldn't be surprised if we looked elsewhere.

The draft is filthy with running backs.

Call me greedy but I want to draft Todd Gurley and get another RB in round four or five to go with Ivory.

Johnson and Powell can pound sand.

I'm not a fan of the Gailey hire but Gailey's "core principle" is to implement a "winning offense" that suits the personnel of the entire team (i.e., offense, defense and STs). That may or not be the spread. He ran that in BUF because he thought that was the best chance they had to succeed with their personnel. In previous stops, he's run a power running attack, others more balanced…etc. He might come in and determine that we need to play a conservative field position type offense, you never know. All this talk about this or that guy working or not working in "Gailey's offense" is very premature.

How exactly do you come to that conclusion? I'm scratching my head here. Ivory is the Jets best RB by far. Powell's a nice back, and does everything pretty well, but he's not good enough to be either the #1 or #2 RB.

Ivory's going nowhere. CJ will be cut, and the Jets will sign Spillers or a FA RB, or take one in the middle rounds.

Ivory and Powell should be a decent enough RB tandem.

Just a thought I had thats all, kind of depends on where Gailey wants to go with the offense

I thought Ivory played great--I wouldn't group him in with the problems we had.

We need a guy who can catch the football out of the backfield in the worst way. I doubt Johnson will be here and Powell isn't really that good. Spiller or a draft pick I'm fine with.

Use whoever that guy is as the multi-dimensional back and keep Ivory for late in the games to wear the defense down if/when we get a lead
