or am I the only guy who remembers the 1986 NY Jets? 10-1 record through the first 2.5 months of the season!!! okay so this bullsh8t site wouldn't let me place the pic (go F8ck yourself "Sneaky" url slave) but it was an image of Joe Walton.
Where did you find this gem? The only winning coach in Jets history? LOL This must have been before the bottom fell out... Funny thing Ewbank, Walton, Edwards, and Ryan all could have left with winning records had they stepped down a year earlier. And in retrospect they all would have been better off.....
Like most coaches he did OK record wise until the talent dried up......he was considered to be a bit too conservative with his play-calling. He also had the misfortune of being the head coach during the Jets move to the Meadowlands which was an unsettling time in the team's history. Some accounts from his former players describe him as a back-stabber and a bully behind the scenes. After his NFL coaching days he went to Morris college in PA and started up their football program. He is revered there. Today he is about 80 years old and a cancer survivor..... Eastchester was my old stomping grounds......long time ago.
I remember that team. We lost to the Patriots in week two and beat John Elway and the undefeated Broncos on Monday night to go 6-1. If I remember correctly we lost 3/5 of the starting OL, the entire sack exchange (we got Gastineau and Lyons back for the playoffs), Lance Mehl (pro bowl MLB). We even lost Ken O'Brien for a couple games. Despite all of that we went down to the Cleveland Browns in double overtime.
To this day I feel that '86 team had the best chance of winning the Super Bowl of any Jets team since 1969. It killed me when Mehl went down. They'd had a ton of injuries but kept winning and winning until he blew out his knee. After that the team just limped into the postseason. IMO Mehl could've been league MVP and a potential HOF linebacker if not for that injury.
That was the season when Paul Maguire said the Jets were the worst 10 and 1 team in NFL history. Unfortunately, he was probably right.
Paul Maguire was the biggest Jet hater in broadcast history. I hated listening to that jackass on TV, especially when we played against he precious Buffalo Bills. Compared to him Francessa loves us. They can both share a bag of dicks.
1986 was a great year - the NYJ season had so much hope... The game against the Dolphins in September might be one of the greatest games I ever saw. Holy shit, 10 TD passes between Marino and Kenny O.
