I don't see any possible way the Eagles are able to land Mariota unless they trade there 1st 2nd and next years number 1 plus another pick or two
We should spend in free agency and trade up for a QB using our draft picks. Its been four years its time to win. If we spend wisely like the year we got Jenkins Faneca Pace ect... we will be back in the hunt. I'm tired of losing!!
One factor I didn't see mentioned about Harvin is that if we keep him then Seattle get's out 4th round pick instead of our 6th. He does some good things in the backfield but he's never been more then an average receiver. Seattle gave him a contract far above his worth, there's no reason why we should keep paying it. So here is what I would do. Cuts - This would leave the Jets with 66.8 million to spend. Harvin - 10.5 million Chris Johnson - 1.5 million Pace - 2.1 million Cumberland - 1.9 million Resignings - I would let everyone else walk including Powell. This is a new regime, they need to get some fresh blood in there. Harris - 3.5 million per season (3 seasons) Harrison - 3.1 million (1 season) - 1st round tender - If someone steals him, so be it, then we have an extra 1st rounder in our pocket. Ellis - 1.5 million (2 seasons) Extensions Wilkerson - 12 million for 5 seasons. It's only an increase of 5 million per season and he's earned it. I would frontload it so if his production drops, then we just give his money to Sheldon later. Free Agency - 52 million to spend. If Bradford get's cut this changes a little bit for me, because beyond Sanchez (and he's not coming back), I don't see a single QB in free agency that is clearly better then Geno, and it's a waste of money to sign a vet (like Vick last year), who has no chance of making the Jets better. We are better off burning a 3rd - 5th round pick on a QB the staff may like. CJ Spiller - 2 million per for 3 seasons Jeremy Maclin - 8 million per for 4 seasons Orlando Franklin - 6 million per for 4 seasons - If he is gone Iupati would be great too. Justin Houston - 14 million per for 5 seasons - This is where our money should go. With a Secondary that still won't be great by any means, another 12 sacks could be the difference between a 5 win season or making the playoffs. Byron Maxwell - 10 million per for 5 seasons. Save the last 12 million for a rainy day. The Jets with those 5 additions and another starter or 2 in the draft could easily go from a 4 win to a 10 or 11 win team.
I just don't think wilkerson is worth 11-13 million a year, that's why I would trade him if the price was right. 5 years and like 45 or even 50 million? Sure that would work but he's gonna get paid big time in the 60-70 million dolllar range and he's just not a game changer that warrants that amount of money (IMO). Maybe if they had someone on the outside he can transform into that player so I'm not saying we should go into the offseason with the mindset to trade him but if someone calls and gives you a huge offer you have to listen.
Figuring out what Wilk is worth is tough,His stats don't leap off the page but I don't think we have seen the best of him yet.I think he's worth 8-9mill a year right now
Do we cut Calvin Pace? He's put up good numbers for a linebacker his age,He has 15 sacks over the last two years.I would keep him for depth and try to find a new starter while keeping him around for one more year
To the OP's question, my first order of biz would be regarding our existing players. 1) cut Harvin, Cumberland and CJ. 2) lock up Wilk, Snacks, and Douzable. keep DL the strength of this team for years to come. Ellis is unfortunately the odd man out. 3) re-sign Purdum and Bellore, 2 of our most consistent STers. 4) try to sign Harris, Landry, and Powell, IF you can get w/o much guaranteed money. After our own players are accounted for, my top priorities are CB, OT, and vet QB. Fill out roster from there with value signings. positions of interest - 2 way TE, WR, 3rd down RB, G, another CB that can play inside or outside, ILB, OLB, FS. Draft BPA early, and whatever positions we didn't adequately fill above late. Then hold your breath, as we'll probably suck again in 2015. Too many holes to sufficiently address in a single offseason, and no real answer at QB.
Hopefully, he's worth the second first round pick CLE got from BUF in the Watkins trade, the 19th pick overall.
Pettine would probably convince the front office to take that deal. Would be an extremely risky move for us why risk All Pro level production for a question mark at 19? We're much better off extending him and keeping our DL top 5 in the league.
The biggest question I have is how much $$$ is Snacks going to cost? It honestly might be impossible to lock up him Mo and Sheldon. Also I keep seeing people referencing the success of Dallas due to their OLine. But it's like they are completely ignoring the fact that they have a top WR, RB, and TE. Also Romo blows away any options we have at QB. It's not as if just building a top OLine is going to give us an offense on par with theirs.
CLE has a need at the position, cap space, an extra 1st rounder, scheme fit and their HC is very familiar with Mo; so it works. It's not a risk if both sides do not agree on a number. In that scenario, the greater risk would be keeping and potentially letting him walk for nothing. Note the last 2 All Pro level players we've traded away have yielded arguably the 2 best players on the current roster, Mangold and Richardson who were drafted by picks received from trading away Abraham and Revis respectively. Lastly, when my team is coming off of a 4-12 preceded by a 6-10 season with no true sense that we're heading towards the right direction, I'm not that interested on keeping the status quo even if it's in area of strength as obviously having a top 5 DL isn't enough.
its entirely possible to keep The sons and coples. Lord Idzik sacrificed his career as a gm to make it so. snacks might make 4-5 million, maybe 6 million tops. Mo and sheldon will make twice that. coples shouldn't make more than 7 million IF that. we can retain all of them if thats what we want.
Murray was nothing more then a below average RB his 1st two seasons, and it wasn't until this year that he had an All-Pro season. Without that offensive line he's really not that great. Put him behind an average line and he is a 950 - 1100 yard RB, which is average these days. Romo has always been a good (10th - 12th best) QB, but with that offensive line he played like a Top 5 QB this year. The Jets took 47 sacks last year, which at 3 per game put them in the bottom 5 in the entire NFL. Some of that is on Geno and Vick for not avoiding some pressure and taking some sacks they shouldn't have, but there were a ton of times where our opponents defensive line blew up the play within one second of the ball being snapped. Cut that 47 sack number even down to 35 and that could have easily been the difference between 4 wins or 7.
I would prefer they sign snacks and we get that pick at 19. If we trade Wilk for the 19th overall pick I just might puke. Do I think we should resign him, idk if the price is right. Do I think we should trade him, idk if the price is right, but we should certainly entertain all options.
I don't want Murray. BUT, calling him a below average RB (albeit first 2 years) isn't an accurate description.
yet you also wanted to keep MM for continuities sake… getting mixed signals. keep the underwhelming OC, trade the valuable versatile d-lineman. right… and yes CG might not work either, but at least we're attempting to change what was broken not what was working and benefitting us out of a logically flawed concept that we need to remove a strength that alone didn't bring us the Lombardi. a top d-line only got us 4 wins so lets dump it? or…fix the other areas with time and draft picks and maintain your strength like your cap space allows. if it aint broke don't fix it. Mo shouldn't get in the way of anything if he's re-signed, he'll only be garunteed a couple years if they do his deal right. this isn't Revis and his CONSTANT pay me 16 million a year contract headaches, Theres no reason not to keep Mo.
The only thing with which I agree is that Mac and Bowles have a tall task this offseason. The CBs the Jets currently have are certainly questionable as to whether they can stay healthy and then play at a quality starting level. At least we have players at those positions, and there's a pretty good chance that Cro could be coming back to that group. For certain some veteran insurance needs to be brought in, maybe even a certain starter, but there are other positions in worse shape. At OLB Pace should be cut for cap savings. The Jets needs someone younger, faster and more of a playmaker. Get a faster, better pass rusher from the edge and suddenly our CBs don't look so bad. David Harris could possibly be brought back at a cheaper contract, but Buffalo might drive his price up. He's already been overpaid imo and is overrated. He needs to be replaced in the middle of the Jets D. Similarly, the Jets don't have a FS on their roster (I don't count Bush, he worthless imo). This is a big need. At OG Aboushi showed some promise, and then there's Dozier, so I wouldn't say that the Jets have needs at both OG positions. I think they perhaps ought to sign a vet who can compete for a starting job, or possibly nail down one of the spots and then let Dozier and Aboushi fight it out for the other. The most important position on any team is QB and the Jets don't have one. I was as big a Geno fan as anyone, but just don't see him ever developing into a consistent quality starter. If Gailey or Trestman can do that, then they're deserving of the HOF on that alone. The Jets must find a veteran stopgap to start this year and hopefully can get Mariota, Winston or maybe Petty as their potential QB of the future. Until the Jets find their franchise QB, that will always be their #1 off season priority, or should be. The second most important position on any offense is the LT position. Brick is older and not very good. It is a must that the Jets find his replacement in this draft and groom him this year so he can replace Brick in 2016 unless they want to hope they can find one next year that is ready to start his rookie season. If Gailey is their OC, he likes to run 4 WR sets. The Jets need to add at least one, if not 2 quality WRs to what they have if they don't retain Harvin, and possibly even if they do retain Harvin, because he can't stay healthy. Gailey also likes to run screens. Adding a fast RB with good hands is a must, otherwise everytime Harvin enters the game in the game in the backfield, the Jets would be tipping their hand. They also need a better #2 TE than Cumberland. They need a TE who excels as a blocker who also has good hands. I'd say the Jets priorities should be more like the following. QB LT OLB/FS (tie) WR/ILB (tie) CB OG TE RB
