that is sort of the point though, there is an exception or so to every rule but in recent times the return on 2nd round picks for the Jets (given that you are often given the chance to pick someone with first round talent) has been woeful.
If it makes you feel any better, remember when you guys gave the Browns a second rounder and a bunch of backups to move up in the first? Well, the Browns had three second round picks in that draft. We needed linebackers, a running back, wide receivers, and a right tackle. We had needed a center, but we drafted one in the first round instead of taking Clay Matthews. All three of the guys we drafted in the 2nd were out of the league last year. 33 Detroit Lions Louis Delmas S Western Michigan 34 New England Patriots Patrick Chung S Oregon 35 St. Louis Rams James Laurinaitis LB Ohio State 36 Cleveland Browns Brian Robiskie WR Ohio State 37 Denver Broncos Alphonso Smith CB Wake Forest 38 Cincinnati Bengals Rey Maualuga LB USC 39 Jacksonville Jaguars Eben Britton OT Arizona 40 New England Patriots Ron Brace DT Boston College 41 New England Patriots Darius Butler CB Connecticut 42 Buffalo Bills Jairus Byrd† S Oregon 43 Carolina Panthers Everette Brown DE Florida State 44 Miami Dolphins Pat White QB West Virginia 45 New York Giants Clint Sintim LB Virginia 46 Houston Texans Connor Barwin† DE Cincinnati 47 Oakland Raiders Michael Mitchell S Ohio 48 Denver Broncos Darcel McBath S Texas Tech 49 Seattle Seahawks Max Unger† C Oregon 50 Cleveland Browns Mohamed Massaquoi WR Georgia 51 Buffalo Bills Andy Levitre G Oregon State 52 Cleveland Browns David Veikune DE Hawaiʻi 53 Philadelphia Eagles LeSean McCoy† RB Pittsburgh 54 Minnesota Vikings Phil Loadholt OT Oklahoma 55 Atlanta Falcons William Moore† S Missouri 56 Indianapolis Colts Fili Moala DT USC 57 Baltimore Ravens Paul Kruger DE Utah 58 New England Patriots Sebastian Vollmer OT Houston 59 Carolina Panthers Sherrod Martin CB Troy 60 New York Giants William Beatty OT Connecticut 61 Miami Dolphins Sean Smith CB Utah 62 Tennessee Titans Sen'Derrick Marks DT Auburn 63 Arizona Cardinals Cody Brown DE Connecticut 64 Denver Broncos Richard Quinn TE North Carolina
I do feel for you guys - I think the Browns must be the only franchise in the NFL with less luck than the Jets.
true but in the same period as we drafted 1 good player in David Harris we also drafted in the first round: - Sheldon Richardson - Mo Wilkerson - Darelle Revis - Nick Mangold - D'Brickashaw Ferguson - Jonathan Vilma And so the return has been better (though its clearly not without some pretty noticeable busts too - sadly)
So here, everyone is assuming the 2014 draft is a total bust? I don't think or agree with that assumption at all.
the thread is "are the Jets the worst second round drafters of all time?" as our returns from the second round have been woeful for a long time and so no-one other than Amaro from 2014 is relevant to the thread.
Because you lost a playoff game by missing a field goal three months earlier? Not saying it's a good reason. Just that it's the reason.
We missed 2 FG's in the 4th quarter in that game. Both were make-able but in cold, windy weather and very iffy at the ranges they were attempted. Nugent was the best college kicker that year and the Jets did a really stupid thing in trading up for him. It was a lot like the Raiders taking Sebastian Janikowski in the 1st round and promptly collapsing into a fetal curl for more than a decade because that's what happens when you waste valuable picks on kickers.
Yes, I understand what this thread is focusing on. To single out 2nd round draft choices, that's a bit nick picking. I think a lot has to do with coaching and putting the players you draft in the right application. Geno Smith for example. Is he considered a bust after just 2 years? A 2nd rounder wasn't nor should be expected to be a franchise type player. Jets took a chance with the pick. He could very be the type to help a team win if used in the right system. Perhaps Bowles and CG will be able to do this.
I would expect 2nd rounders to at least be solid long-term contributors to a team. Only one that fits that description in any way is Harris.
Jeez its just a thread pointing out how terrible our second round picks have turned out...... we have had some decent first round, some decent later rounds but given that in the second round you should expect to come away with a decent starter considering a lot of these guys are deemed to have first round talent but just fall a bit often because of a lack of positional value or whatever - anyway it just struck me as I was looking at a second round mock that it was an age since we had done that and when I looked into it just thought it was pretty striking just how bad we have fared in the second round, its not intended to be a comment on the Jets overall drafting performance.
when it boils right down to it with guys 2nd round are lower.... are you willing to supplement yourself to become a better player.
I remember at the time that the commentators made specific reference to kicking in the Pitt stadium, to that particular end of the field, and how long field goals almost all missed, regardless of kicker. We had an accurate field goal kicker. It was clearly an overreaction.
To me, the first two rounds are not for experimentation. Guys like Stephen Hill and even Lam Jones are atrocious second round picks. I won't even talk about Nugent. Funny thing is, these guys were all picked by different GMs.
It wasn't just an over-reaction it was a reach out of desperation. It was the culmination of a long sequence in which the Jets kept trading up for players and finally went the other way but instead of getting the kind of value they usually gave up to move up they took a freaking kicker...
