Chan Gailey was a first-time head coach with the Cowboys when guys like Irvin were on their way out. If I remember correctly, he tried coming up with innovative ideas to get Irvin open and it didn't really work out. But he's not afraid to try things, and I respect that about Gailey. So frankly, I don't trust Irvin's opinion of Gailey in the least, especially an opinion that probably dates back 15 years. People see retreads and freak out. But Gailey was a successful OC. I think he's going to be great for this offense. Ignore the personnel we have; he's the type of coach to make adjustments regardless of who we have. The problem a lot of people have (this is not directed at you, just a general observation) is that they know head coaches much better than coordinators, and when they hear of a previously "failed" head coach coming on board, it gives a lot of people pause. Quite honestly, I'm starting to think bringing in Gailey is the absolute best decision Bowles could have made. Just bringing in Gailey is a somewhat innovative idea. Kicking the tires on a guy who can mold with what you're looking to do. I'm VERY excited about this group of coaches now. I think the team has a bright future by cleaning house like this.
If nothing else, hiring Gailey is like hiring 2 head coaches, 1 on offense and 1 on defense. With Bowles being wet behind the ears as a HC this is probably a great hire once Gailey gets his football legs back under him. It's like a bench coach in baseball, this will be great for Bowles. Like I said earlier, i'll stay positive on this until something gives me reason to question it.
As I sift thru this thread finding all sorts of inane arguments as to why/why not Chan Gaily should be OC of the Jets, has it come to this point in the franchise's stage for any fan to make any viable arguments to their CS hiring after a 4-12 season? For crying out loud, can't we just accept it and at least give them some support and a chance to see what comes of it? IMO, with Geno Smith the incumbent, there's not much on a positive note to suggest there will be a vast improvement in the offense, anyway. It's really a guessing game until their personnel issues have been resolved.

I like Chan. At the very least he's an experienced HC who can help smooth the transition for Bowles. I wanna see this play out. And god willing, he'll get Dorial Green-Beckham for Geno to throw at.
Maybe God will give him some new inventive plays to use. I mean, he's been out of football for 2 years now so hopefully, he realizes the wildcat isn't so wild anymore.
I heard Craig Carton say that this am that he wasn't sure about it yet,but reports seem to indicate that he is infact our OC.I just hope he doesn't ruin our running game that finished 3rd overall ,We need to play to our strengths witch are defense and running the ball ...depending on who we have at QB
It would be nice to get a balanced attack on offense for once. We're either pass happy or GnP. No nuances with our offense. No sirree bob. When that guy from Buffalo mentioned that Gailey was a kamikaze on 3rd and short, it kinda made me nervous considering our running game was never the problem.
To be fair, our running game success was due to a lack of passing game. Let's not pretend we rode it because it was dominant.
It's kind of alarming that you took all the time to do that, but I'm glad you did. I was going to start a new thread on my feelings about Rex, but I'll just do it right here (in a Chan Gailey thread?). This week the Bills hired Rex, and there has been information on Rex thrown at me everywhere I turn (Buffalo radio, articles, press conferences, TV, interviews with former players) that discussed the other side of the argument for Rex. It gave me a lot of new info and the opportunity to look at Rex in depth, instead of surface level Jets news from afar. For the first time I got to hear some different information other than the negative opinions on this Jets board and the negative articles by Jets media (Mehta) and national headlines. As a Bills fan, I dont really follow the Jets. All the info I have on the Jets comes from this board and the articles posted. As a Bills fan following this board, all I really looked at the past few years was "the circus" and the record, but as I look back at his tenure in New York more in depth, I think his career can be summed up quite simply, actually. When he had good talent, he won, and when he had shitty talent, he was not effective. Those first two years he had good players to work with, he coached them up, changed the culture, and won. Look at the difference in rosters after that. Look at the blown draft picks. Look at the crappy trades. Look how the salary cap was mismanaged. Look at the crappy free agents brought in or the lack of free agents brought in. Look what he had to work with. Those were all problems by two incompetent GM's. I know of many coaches who have won with good talent. I can't think of a single one who was successful with garbage. Rex's persona works pretty well when he has good talent to work with, and makes him look like a jackass when he doesn't and he loses. The Bills have plenty of talent. They have responsible players who are dedicated and have good character. What the Bills are lacking (besides a QB obviously) is the attitude and belief that we can win. We haven't seen winning in 15 years and don't even know what it looks like anymore. We're not confident. We don't expect to win. We just had a coach quit on us. What we need is exactly what Rex brings: confidence, swagger, high expectations, a winning resume, and a guy who refuses "to get pushed around" as he likes to say. You get this Bills talent to start believing in themselves, wow... watch out. Pettine started it and brought a lot of that over, Marrone brought some as well, but Rex is really the embodiment of what all of that means. I think he'll be successful here. The coordinators will be responsible for the x's and o's and Rex will sit back and set the vision. It will obviously be very important what we do at the QB position over the next 6 months. As I sit now, with the information I have, there's no way I can look back anymore and say Rex was a buffoon with those rosters he had the last few years. To me, he has already proven that he can get a team to the playoffs and two AFC championship games when he has good talent (and a crappy QB I might add). He hasn't had good players in years. He brings exactly what the Bills are looking for.
Well done Joe. Unmask those short memory frauds. Rex has gone from a loud mouth inferior coach to the best thing for the Bills in no time.
Other guy jumping in here- not the guy you were quoting: Rex is a very good coach. There's nobody more creative on defense, and nobody better liked by his players. He should do well on a team with a strong defense, and I think the city and media will really take a liking to him, especially if he gets off to a strong start. On the other hand, his teams have often looked unprepared, and they'll suffer maddening "too many men on the field" penalties as his own team gets confused by his defenses. He has also tended to favor the Wildcat, and it's very frustrating how he'll tend to punt when he's trailing by a small margin with just a few minutes left in the game. (He'll explain that he was confident his defense would get a quick 3 and out.) Overall, he'll be good for Buffalo, but I'd be concerned about the say he's rumored to have over front office decisions. The Jets did not draft well under Rex, when he was rumored to be advising the GMs. The Jets almost always picked defensive players with their early picks under Rex, and almost all of the offensive players they picked ended up busting. We were good initially, but were not able to replace the veteran backbone of the team as the core guys started retiring.
