It looks to me that Dan Quinn is going to fall into the laps of Atlanta. Right now he is the clear favorite to land there. They could have rushed and hired Rex, but by moving slow they might just land the hottest coaching prospect of the off season. Jets out of the picture and jump the gun (IMO) to get Bowles. Raiders job closed with the hire of Del Rio (good move IMO) Niners job closed with in house hire of Tomsula Indication is John Fox will end up in Chicago. I do not know the relationship with Elway, but I can see them going with Gase. If not I don't see Quinn ending up in Denver. Whatever the case I hope that Jets hired Bowles because he was their number 1. If we didn't and waited I think we would of ended up with Quinn and Bowles in Atlanta.
We didn't jump the gun. We grabbed the best coach prospect of the bunch. That being said, Quinn >>>> every other coaching candidate, so the Falcons did a good job by waiting. I bet they would have hired Bowles if the Jets let him fly to Atlanta today, though.
I agree the way the coaches started getting hired the last day, Bowles would be in Atlanta if we didn't. I only say we jumped the gun - if we hired Bowles because we were scared we would lose him AND Quinn. I don't think we would of though-- I have thought all along that Atlanta and Jets were getting Quinn and Bowles just not sure who got each one. Even before Rex signed, I didn't think he would end up in Atlanta.
The sad thing is, it's gonna be nearly impossible to tell if we jumped the gun (unless Bowles completely fails). If Quinn joins the Falcons, he is bound to have success. With a Qb and offense already in place, it won't be hard for him to turn the defense around and win soon in that division. When that happens, people may wish that we had waited for (and hired) Quinn... his success in Atlanta won't say anything about how he could have coached the Jets. Without a Qb or an offense in place, there's no saying what Quinn (or Bowles) would do here. At this point it's not worth thinking about IMO; hypotheticals won't make this team any better, haha.
I think Rex could've gotten more out of that defense then Quinn potentially will. Rex has proven that he can make a bad-on-paper defense look fairly decent. Quinn has never had to work with anything other than an allstar D. Atlanta blew it by not giving Rex the offer when he interviewed there and Quinn will have his work cut out for him if he takes the Falcon job.
As far as getting another job -- spot on. I wouldn't mind sitting home and collecting $4 million. Shit - if I could get that I know I could stretch it so I wouldn't have to work again.
$4M doesn't equal $4M in your wallet. Don't forget your agent, taxes, etc..... Sure, he walking with a nice amount of coin, but being a HC in the NFL carries prestige, and Marrone just pissed it away for small potatoes. Marrone is the poor man's Ricky Williams of NFL Head Coaches.....
Even after agents cut and taxes he will clear probably $2.5 M and if Dennis Erickson, Marion Campbell, Romeo Crennel and Bruce Coslet each got a second chance I don't see why Marrone won't. Not saying he deserves one just that he will get it.
He is interviewing for the Jaguars OC Job!!! How crazy is that he fires himself as HC for a shot at the "prestigous" Jaguars OC job....I have a feeling things didn't go according to plan for him
$4 mil plus what he would get as the Jags OC plus he gets to move from Buffalo and get a nice place out on Fernadina Beach or someplace close to there. Sign me up. This Or this
i think Atlanta's best choices were Rex or Bowles. now they better really hope they get Quinn, and who knows if they will.. So no, i don't think they've gone about this smartly.
I dont know know about Quinn, he has been given the hype banwagon on this forum but I believe there are red flags about him for multiple reason. He inherited that defense that Bradley has built, the same Bradley who they were considering firing in Jacksonville. Secondly, defensive coordinators recently that have won Super Bowls? Marvin Lewis, Steven Spagnola..... But I do believe Atlanta failing to get Rex was costly, he was by far the safest pick to come in there and immediately fix that defense up. The fact of the matter though is Arthur Blanks mother was very sick and inevitably died during this whole coaching search, so that affected them and put the whole thing on hold. Its a shame because I really would have liked to see what Ryan could have done with a ready-made offense down in Atlanta.
I think if the owners mother doesn't die he moves quicker on Rex and Rex is in Atlanta. after they blew it w/ Rex I don't think they could go wrong w/ Quinn or Bowles so they still made out ok just not as good as they should have.
If Marrone doesn't get a job this season he can sit back and pick a spot next year. This post just reeks of the jilted girl.
Rex was so starved for love he took the first team that wanted him. Atlanta did well not to jump after Rex IMO.
