I'm happy w/ the move. I wanted Quinn or Bowles w/ Quinn first but I understood the risks of waiting for him so I'm happy w/ Bowles.
the crap from this team has worn me out over the years......the only thing constant is change and a bust draft pick. not saying i dont like the hires but not saying i do. i have no opinion. i defer to the product on the field.
Yep yep, losing Rex's puppet will hurt us so much in the long run. Especially since our defense got worse since he was 'DC'
My biggest concern is if Bowles will actually be the HC instead of the DC. We just went thru this with Rex and it doesn't make any sense at all to do it all over again expecting a different result. I'm hoping Bowles does well but if he's gonna be the HC/DC Hybrid, we might as well have kept Rex. Keeping my fingers crossed...
Just because he is a defensive guy doesn't mean he can't coach offense. Not all DCs are like Ryan. The hiring of Gaily as OC will steady the offense and take pressure off Bowles to completely run that.
Super Bowles! I wanted Dan Quinn, but I think Bowles will most likely end up being a good HC for us. Everything I've read makes him sound like a super candidate. I can't complain. "The guy is special," one NFL coach said of Bowles, per ESPN's Vaughn McClure. "People just don't understand, they don't make them like that anymore." http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...ew-york-jets-hiring-todd-bowles-as-head-coach
That doesn't matter. Every coach comes in with some focus, whether D or O. There are other factors that determine whether an assistant coach can successfully make the transition to head coach. Rex was lacking in many of those important skills. Look at how many games the Jets just seemed unprepared under Rex - the offense AND the defense, EVERY year that he he was head coach. We never saw that under Parcells. There are also other things that Rex didn't do well as a head coach and never improved upon. That's why he was fired.
http://espn.go.com/blog/arizona-car...alftime-but-it-wasnt-arians-doing-the-yelling broke a whiteboard at halftime.. with his team ahead. Second half his defense forced 4 turnovers and scored themselves just as much as they gave up (7 pts against with a pick 6)
As a response to this comment, and in general, Bill Belichek was a defensive guy also. IT DOESN"T MATTER! The real question is can he be an effective HEAD COACH!
offensive HC, defensive HC, STs HC- IT DOESN'T MATTER. You get the best guy for the job. Brian Billick was an offensive guru, Baltimore won a SB with defense. The last time we hired an offensive minded HC it was Rich Kotite, before that Bruce Coslet, before that Joe Walton so should we just reach for an offensive minded guy that may not be ready? Just b/c we got a defensive guy doesn't mean the O will suck. If Harbaugh was available then we go all in to get him but he wasn't and just getting an offensive guy b/c our O has struggled is silly.
This whole "we need an offensive coach" is such fuckin bullshit. Shut the fuck up with this nonsense. Some of the greatest coaches in history were defensive Coordinators. It's whether a guy can be an efficient head coach not what his previous job was.
Funny... two weeks ago people were clamoring for us to hire Marrone because he was the best candidate available and basically the anti-Rex. Now Marrone may not even be a HC in the league and the guy we hired has a way more impressive resume.
The constant unpreparedness was the thing I just couldn't take anymore. It will be nice to not have a 12 men on the field penalty every game ... or not waste timeouts every game trying to avoid a 12 men on the field penalty, or because our QB is looking at the sideline with his arms outstretched and his shoulders shrugged. There was one sequence this year where we threw away a TO because of our usual chaos, and then came back on the field and took a delay of game penalty! How is that even possible? We need a tighter ship, and if Bowles brings that I'm all for it.
2000 New York Jets GM: Bill Parcells HC: Al Groh OC: Dan Henning DC: Mike Nolan WR Coach: Todd Haley TE Coach: Ken Whisenhunt Secondary Coach: Todd Bowles
I had already come around to the pov that the Jets did not need an offense guy to be HC earlier this week, so I agree on that point. I also have beeen very impressed by the Cards the last two years, and while I think perhaps the biggest chunk of credit there goes to Arians, it is also true that Arians had Bowles as his DC, and that the Cards' D was their strongest unit. So in connection with that point I hope Bowles learned a lot being around Arians, who himself proved to be a fast study becoming an NFL HC. Then there's the fact that the Cards did a great job on D with something less than top shelf personnel. Arians again deserves great credit, but here Bowles gets the higher percentage (to be clear between this and the previous point, and not to digress, but fans should be impressed by how Arizona dealt with such severe blows to their O especially at Qb. But the "dealt with" part also extended to their D, so Bowles gets big cred there.) In the middle, the Jets did not seem to be interested in someone with previous HC experience, and I get that as well. Kubiak, Fox, Marrone probably would have done a decent to good job here. But I get the interest in using a younger guy to rebuild and hopefully be here for the medium to long term. In that connection Quinn looked somewhat more promising, but it would have been too much to have waited and lost out on him in the hope of realizing some intangible supposed benefit as between these two. Interesting that Johson seems to have been concerned about that prospect. We'll see how Bowles and Quinn compare down the road, but I do get the choice here. It was a risk either way. At this point then my main concern is the Gailey hiring. Hm. On the face of it Smith does not seem the kind of Qb who would work well in previous systems Gailey has used. And he's been on the couch for two years. It's a concern.
People were clamoring for Marrone because it looked obvious that the only reason he quit was because he knew he had the job ... and the fans wanted to get out in front of it so that when he was announced as the hire they could claim "See? That's the guy I wanted all along. The Jets are so smart!" It's pseudo-front running. He went from a nobody ... to the clear-cut best candidate available ... to a nobody in about 10 days.
