Chan Gailey is an awesome pickup for you guys. Every Bills offensive player regressed under Marrone/Hackett. Gailey is a great offensive mind that maximizes talent. If you keep Harvin he will be a monster under Gailey. I could also see Spiller wanting to play for you now. His downfall was the terrible team he inherited and his picks for defensive coordinator in Buffalo. Wannstedt was completely washed up as a defensive guy and that is why Gailey got fired. Classy guy too. Go to Bills boards and there were "I wish we still had Gailey calling the offense" threads the last two years.
Would you say that Chan Gailey's offense is similar to what you saw from Brian Schottenheimer in 2009 and 2010 when the Bills played the Jets? Personally, I find the spread offense to be night and day different from the hybrid Coryell/WCO that Schotty ran, but apparently some very educated minds disagree.
Gailey loves screens, bunch formations. You will almost never see power formations every play threatens a pass but the run can be extremely effective out of these. Bills had one of the best screen games in the NFL when he was here. The bunch formations are also great as he finds ways to get receivers open on almost every play. You need a QB that can get the ball out quick and accurately to maximize YAC. From what I recall of Brian, there were more power formations than Gailey employed.
In just doing a little bit of reading and research this morning, while I'm not thrilled with the Gailey hire, it seems like our personnel could flourish. Especially Percy Harvin. I'm not that familiar with the Texas Tech offense but isn't what Gailey runs sort of similar to what they run? I can see Amaro heading up the seam on some 4-wide plays.
God, I forgot Amaro was on the team, he was used so often. We do need a speedster to get down field, Ivory and CJ (if he stays) could do good things in this offense. We need a decent QB either in FA, or the draft. This year is shaping up nicely...on paper.
Tons of power formations, although he also liked to sprinkle in 5 wide sets that called for every receiver to run a buttonhook and also never seemed to figure out the merits of the slant route. It was mainly intended to confuse the opposing defense and only managed to confuse our offense. I don't think anyone needs to worry about the Jets instantly capitalizing in that spread, since our QB hopes rest on Geno Smith and a fantasy future QB that will likely never materialize. I'll enjoy seeing something different than Ground and Pound. You guys at least have the backfield for it.
Thanks for your contributions....and not just because you are positive for a Jets hire but you posts are very football knowledgeable/based and I appreciate that. I like that he spreads defenses out. That's how you need to play in the modern NFL IMO. I worry about your last sentence though - Geno Smith is not the type of QB to get the ball out quickly and maximize YAC. I would value your opinion on if he is salvageable in a Gailey offense? I was against Hoyer because I don't think he's very good but he is a QB that gets the ball out quickly. Maybe he's a good fit now
I am glad Gailey is back in the NFL and will cheer for him except for 2 games a year. Here is the game that was the highpoint of his Bills coaching career.
Fred Jackson was a real MVP Candidate in 2011 prior to his injury in that offense... This team needs a speedy RB that can catch balls underneath now. Maybe we address that in FA, because Ivory isn't that type of back.
Tell us more about how you wanted Woody to hire a bunch of almost dead guys. I'd also be interested in hearing how many coaches went on to win a superbowl after having won one with a different team first. Since you only want champs.
Air Raid (Texas Tech) is a really extreme version of the spread, a lot of downfield routes designed to run the defense out of their cleats all day long. I am not extremely familiar with Chan's attacks but I'd think he isn't as extreme as that, baalworship mentioned a lot of screens, so I think it's a more balanced attack. Really feels weird that we're hiring a 63 year old OC to finally move into the new age of football.
Actually, my preference was for keeping Rex, putting him in control of the team as GM/HC (LINK), and hiring Gamble to replace Idzik; Gamble should have been the hire in the first place two years ago. If the Rex was gone no matter what? I would have went the college route (Saban, Meyer or Dantonio) and said as much over a week ago (LINK). Once Fox was fired, I felt he was far and away the best of the available candidates currently in the NFL.
Bilal Powell can catch balls underneath. He's not ideal, but I'd prefer to roll with Powell rather than spending on a free agent that probably isn't much better than him (check out the crop). I think this is an area Mac is going to address somewhere after the 3rd round.
Ah, Air Raid, that's right. I mean considering how good Amaro was at getting downfield at TT, the fact that we're going to spread the ball out more than we did last year can only make him more useful. Now he just has to catch the ball.
