Rex went to the AFC championship game with the best rushing attack in the nfl. We ran the ball 450 times and dominated. Don't get me wrong - the D was balling. But let's not act like there was no offense back then and it was all on Sanchez' shoulders. It was Rex's decision to switch from that offense and let Sanchez be the pivot in the game plan. And it blew up in his face. It was Rex's decision to stick with Sanchez, who was playing like hot garbage. This years roster was weak but look at how underutilized Ivory was. Let's not get into the penalties, 12-13 men on the field, lack of accountability, boneheaded did outbursts with no punishment and the culture if arrogance Rex breeds. The guy was not a good HC. He inherited a talented roster as got exposed once the well ran dry. His record speaks for itself.
Love the sarcasm. LOL!!! I absolutely get your point...my problem is that Gailey was never really known for "tailoring" his schemes to the talent he had. You either fit what he wanted or you weren't successful. Which is more the reference I make to 1995 than anything else. Remember back in the day? You did what they told/wanted you to do and we "don't care what you do well." LOL!!! That's why I say we don't have the "horses."
You don't think having success with Fitzpatrick and Kordell Stinking Stewart is tailoring to personnel?? Look guy, I am not even close to being happy about the idea of having Chan Gailey as OC, not even close, but you are not making much of a compelling argument to the contrary.
Arizona had a top 5 D the past 2 years with inferior talent and a slew if injuries. That's similar success. Seattle was the best, no question. But if you give Quinn all the credit for that, then Bowles deserves a heck of a lot of credit as well.
The fact that GoldenSharts won't even factor the complete crap they had at QB and the disgusting number of 3 and outs on offense into that equation pretty much tells you what he adds to the debate.
There is a reason Richard Sherman is on camera saying he thinks Bowles is the best Defensive Coordinator in the entire league. The fact that he somehow got the Cardinals defense to only give up 18 points per game, on a team that was 3rd to last in rushing and had nothing at QB after Palmer went down is a miracle, not to mention how many players were injured. It really shouldn't shock anyone he wanted the Jets job when multiple teams were after him. We still have a great front 7 on defense. We still had a top 5 rushing game last year. We have more money to spend then any other team in the NFL. We have a good draft pick.
The offense also had a lot of 3 and outs, making them naturally give up more yards, so I think that's skewed.
Be careful, Bill Belicheck once told Kerry Rhodes he was the best safety he ever faced, and Kerry ended up believing the hype. Sherman also talks at length about Quinn, and thinks he's better than Revis, and I don't think he really is. I'm hoping that THE TODD comes to us like a New Jersey Sledgehammer, fixes things and also bangs Belichecks girlwife in the butt, but we have probably 5 months before we even know what this guy is about.
If nothing else the bad calls by refs should go down now. Rex antagonized officials. Good luck Coach Bowles.
I'll never understand those that kill a hire simply because a guy has "no HC experience". First of all, Bowles DOES have experience as a HC, having been interim coach in Miami, even though the "experience" factor has nothing to do with being successful. All these "great" HC's were inexperienced at one time and imo, experience comes with taking something from each coach you've been around and using your experiences as learning tools when your time comes. Bowles seems like a hard nosed guy that will hold his players accountable, something Rex NEVER did and that always pissed me off. I'm hopeful that with a personnel guy at the helm with our new GM, and a no nonsense guy in Bowles coaching the team, that we can shed the label of a franchise that has no direction or true leadership, and restore some respectability to the NY JETS.
Me too. There was a real good chance of being "left at the alter" waiting on Quinn, especially with the Bronco's HC position suddenly becoming available. That changed everything in the HC hunt, especially when they let the whole coaching staff go on the Broncs. I'm glad they didn't chase Gase as he is a product of Manning, or Jack Del Rio. Plus this opened up another opportunity that was more attractive then the Jets for potential success. I'm glad they made the move and didn't get shafted.
There are 6 first round picks on the defense that Rex coached, that should be enough talent for a guy like Rex to coach up. And I don't subscribe to the notion that Rex's inability to develop 2 rookie QB's means that Bowles won't be successful at developing one. I am more the happy to let this play out before I pass judgement on these hires...
