The fact that Peyton has been so non committal leads me to believe he's contemplating retirement. When that happens lean towards retirement. I wouldn't expect them to let dt leave the building but Julius thomas maybe. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I don't want Hoyer at all.. ugh. Hoyer blows. He's not accurate at all. I'd rather have Sanchez and/or potentially Geno Smith than Hoyer. All Hoyer does that is good - is get the ball out quickly. He benefitted from perception in Cleveland. He got hurt in 2013 before they could figure out he was no good. This year he stayed out of the way and let the defense win against some crappy teams. When they faced better teams he struggled mightily. Hoyer sucks. If Quinn comes here we can all say bye, bye to Harris and Pace. After having tremendous success with smaller, quicker LBs in Seattle he's not going to want the slow, trodding, trucks like Harris and Pace. Good Chance they end up in Buffalo. Houston, if I'm not mistaken, had smaller LBs too. I could be wrong about that though. Demario Davis will flourish next year under Quinn.
I'm all in for Byron Maxwell with that said we still need more help on offense and I hope we bring in a few WRs thru FA
Seattle's LBs are not smaller and quicker. The 4-3 Under they run essentially utilizes typical 3-4 personnel. KJ Wright is huge, bigger than Harris even. Bobby Wagner is over 240 (and jacked), and both the SAM and LEO positions resemble DE/OLB tweeners.
can you imagine Lynch post game here in NY? One word answers to Cimini and Mehta? We should sign him just for that!
yes ran a multiple front D at UFlorida. would change between 3-4 and 4-3, and have commonly heard it referenced as a hybrid 3-4 with a Buck LB. Quinn also taught Dline the 3-4 under Saban in Miami, and under Mangini with the Jets.
the 4-3 Under they run is a fairly likely scenario. the more i look at it though, the more elements of 3-4 i see in it. it almost needs 3-4 type personnel, and we have a lot of guys who would fit well in that already. then when i look at what he did in UFlorida, i see more multiple hybrid fronts used. he also worked under a 3-4 as a Dline coach for Miami and the Jets. your assumption may be right, but i don't think it's cut and dry. One of the reasons i like Quinn as an option, is i believe he is a coach who schemes based on personnel, rather than the other way around. it would be interesting to hear his plan if he takes the job...
You're right, many of the players on his defense don't fit the prototype of the position, and their roles are clearly different based on the players strengths. One thing I'm sure of though is that he's going to want another edge pass rusher.
I can't discuss potential FA signings (although I am almost 100% certain we will never see Revis in a NYJ uniform again). Regarding our FA's, I would be SHOCKED if we don't re-sign Bilal Powell. I would like to see Ellis and believe it or not Colon return. I think Colon is a solid leader in the LR and on the field. He makes dumb penalties, but he plays hard and is overall pretty solid.
I can definitely see brining back Powell, especially since he is so solid on 3rd down. I don't think we'll need two big bodied NT types under Quinn (since that's what this thread is about) so Ellis is expendable to me. We absolutely must get better on the line, and Colon is definitely not that good of a player. He's way overweight to match up well against these super athletic defenders, and I think it's time for him to go. I'd rather invest money into a top of the line guard like Iupati and draft another O-Linemen.
Going by ESPN stats: David Harris 6 2 250 Demario Davis 6 2 239 Quinton Coples 6 6 275 Calvin Pace 6 4 265 KJ Wright 6 4 246 Malcolm Smith 6 0 226 Bobby Wagner 6 0 241 Coples and Pace are linemen playing linebacker and much bigger than anything Seattle has. Harris is also heavier than any Seattle starting LB. Davis is the only guy playing around their size. Smith is pretty small, safety sized, Wagner is bulky but short.
You need bodies for DL rotation. Ellis is a perfect fit to backup Harrison. I'd like to see an upgrade at the OG position, but i think it's needed on the other side.
So KJ Wright is the same weight as Harris, but even taller. He's one of the bigger LB's to man the middle in the league. Wagner and Davis are the same size. Malcolm Smith is a backup. Bruce Irvin is the starting SAM, playing at 6 3 248. The SAM plays on the LOS, and is expecting to set the edge, pass rush, and occasionally drop into coverage. It is a similar role to a 3-4 OLB, not unlike Pace's. Cliff Avril is the LEO (or Elephant), which is completely a hybrid DE/OLB position. This is typically a smaller DE, or big LB, depending how you look at it. They also set the edge, and serve as the primary pass rusher. Avril is 6 3 260 So the interior LB's are the same size. Coples and Pace are bigger than Avril and Irvin, but not by a whole lot. Quinn likes a big front, and emphasizes stopping the run. The size argument doesn't hold up. Seattle's guys are younger and more explosive, which would make a much better argument.
If Quinn does play the 4-3 Under, we could use a better edge guy to play the LEO. Coples could potentially play it, but ideally you'd want more speed on that edge. It's a role Pace would have been good at in his prime. He might be worth depth, but i agree an upgrade would be nice. My big question is where to put Coples on that D? Wilk will play the 5 tech on strong side, Harrison the Nose Guard, and Richardson the 3 tech on weak side. as mentioned above, i don't think Coples is an ideal LEO. He might be better served replacing Harrison on Nickel, and providing interior pass rush. He can also be a backup for the LEO if we upgrade. i just think it's entirely possible Quinn adjusts the scheme to get all these guys on the field more. that could include playing the 3-4 more often than not.
If Quinn comes to NY (or any defensive coach for that matter) I'd be very surprised if any of the over 30's in the defensive front are brought back. I'd expect the 6 pick to be a pass rusher and the LB's to be completely rebuilt around DeMario Davis. Rex was in town for 6 years. That's a long time and the defensive roster has accumulated a bunch of Rex players over the years. Most of those guys not on the line of scrimmage and probably a couple of backups on the line will be gone next year. They'll probably be in Buffalo.
I disagree on Colon. Leaders need to lead on and off the field, and Colon's on field example is that of either an undisciplined or unfocused player. The Jets can get younger, stronger, faster, and more focused at that spot. Personally I think one of the biggest problems the Jets have had these past few years is an "ok" offensive line... they need to get back to having a dominant offensive line as it is one of the most surefire ways to end up in the winning column. Amongst all of the players on the oline, only Mangold and Brick are good, and they aren't getting younger. This entire line will need to be rebuilt over the next few years.
This thread is mind blowingly stupid,Quinn is still coaching ,Shannahan is still accepting interviews, and Bowles is becoming a real possibility. The Broncos just requested an interview with Quinn and yet we have a free agency thread about him ....its jumping the gun to the next level and will probably jynx us
That's the thing though, I think I higher percentage of snaps will have Wilk and Sheldon inside with Coples as a DE. I think Snacks will probably be used a bit less than this year. I guess we'll see though. I do think Coples is oversized for a Leo though, I'm not sure his lateral agility is quite good enough to play that.
