Seems like a lot of people like this guy now that he is all but certain to be our next GM, and most people seem to feel positive about him because supposedly unlike Idzik, he comes from the scouting side of things. So here is his track record as of late. According to this article by Cimini, he became the Texans Director of College Scouting in July 2011:

    http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/je...maccagnan-a-look-at-the-jets-top-gm-candidate

That was after the 2011 NFL Draft, so he was in charge of the Texans scouting for 3 drafts, from 2012 to 2014. Here are their picks during those drafts (the first 3 years):

    http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/htx/draft.htm

So, they got a bunch of starters (7 or so) during those 3 years, but DeAndre Hopkins is the only impact type player I can see. Suddenly the bean counter (Idzik) doesn't look so bad at drafting. :)

He wasn't the GM. There's no way of knowing how much input he had in each pick because it's ultimately up to the GM to pick the player.

Maccagnan doesn't draft the players, their GM does. We have no idea how much input he had in the process.

By this logic John Idzik shouldn't get any hate for his drafts, because it's the fault of the Jets Director of College Scouting.

    two things wrong with this

1.) idzik worked in scouting at a point in his career

    2.) idzik wasn't a bad drafter

3.) it seems to me from what you posted that expectations are already too high for the draft

Yeah, we don't know exactly how much input Maccagnan has had into their drafting process, but since he is a guy without any GM experience, and has not done anything else on that level, the Houston drafting record is the only thing we can use to evaluate him at this point. What else are the Jets using to evaluate him exactly? He has no experience with the cap or the financial side of things, no experience being a GM, so the only thing you can use is his past teams' record at drafting, and that has been anything but stellar.

I know, I wrote that stuff sarcastically. It seems pretty funny to me that we replaced Idzik, whom I liked, because he was supposedly a bean counter or bad at drafting or whatever, and brought in a supposed personnel guy, who actually had a very spotty record at a position of importance.

Hasnt Maccagnan been a part of their scouting team for over a decade? Way too many unknowns in terms of who has how much input.

If the guy has ever played a role in delivering a franchise QB, it had to have been in Washington, London, or somewhere other than Houston.

Because the Houston Texan QB history since its inception has been downright awful, comparable to that of the NYJ.

I'm optimistic but I'm not going all in like I did with Idzik. I wont say I disliked Idzik, yet, we really do need someone with a good eye for talent in that GM chair.

He has got nothing but praise for his eye for talent, that is important to me as a fan. So I will just take a back seat and pray for the best at this point.

We can't knock on the guy yet. We don't know who he liked and without researching it, don't know who was available when they picked.

It's not like there was a star QB in every draft he missed on.

I hope he gets a fair chance here. We need stability in the front office. I hope the billboard squad gives the new GM a chance for him to implement his plan and allow his draft picks to develop, before they get impatient.

Remember that Maccagnan was rising through the ranks in the Houston scouting department from 2000 until now. By the time he had risen high in the scouting department (he became Assistant Director of College Scouting in 2010), Matt Schaub was the Texans starting QB. The QB position wasn't considered an issue by the powers that be in Houston until very recently; this may have been unwise, but need isn't the head of college scouting's decision to make. All a scout can do is try and identify talent and give that information to the decision-makers.

Casserly, and more importantly Ron Wolf (since he's not Maccagnan's mentor and thus is more objective) seem to like Maccagnan and think he is the best fit for the job. Given their credentials, especially Wolf's, I'll take their word for it that Maccagnan's the guy, until and unless his performance proves otherwise.

Like anyone we would hire, we could sit here and critique that person to death, but for me I'm choosing to take a wait and see approach to the organization going forward.
I know what we had with Rex & Idzik and I wasn't happy, so for me it's addition by subtraction.
Our team has over $40 million in cap space, a #6 pick in the draft and hopefully an energized young coach and staff ready to take this this team in a positive direction.
I'm hoping our new FO/CS instill some respectability into this franchise that was viewed as a circus & a laughing stock under the old regime.

lol at the people in this thread saying Idzik wasn't a bad drafter. Other than hitting on one top ten pick, what GOOD draft picks has he made? Every other pick is either jury's still out or the guy's already in bustville.

Idzik picked Geno Smith to be his franchise QB. His eye for talent is terrible. Time to give someone else a chance at calling the picks.
