Some guys here are just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks. Our first two picks are likely to address OL, LB, and WR. I can't see us making the mistake of taking a corner early again, and none are really worth it in our case. We are much better off signing corners in free agency who have experience. We already have to throw Milliner and McDougle back into the fire. I can see us also signing some veteran linemen in free agency, but we will almost definitely be bringing in fresh bodies this year. WR Amari Cooper Devante Parker Kevin White Jaelen Strong OL Brandon Scherff Cedric Ogbuehi La'el Collins ILB and OLB Randy Gregory Shaq Thompson Shawn Oakman Dante Fowler Jr Denzel Perryman Bernardrick McKinney What do you guys think? There are definitely a bunch of linemen I missed. These players should be our targets in the first round and early in round 2 when we pick. Though I don't know how many of these guys will be there by the 2nd round...
Cooper Or SCHERFF really want cooper don't see him being there so Im good with OL not flashy but definitely needed
Oakman didn't declare!! If our new GM is M. Maccagnan, O-line could be a strong possibility at #6. Scherff , Peat or Stanley (If he declares) should be the front runners. Not Fans of Ogbuehi or Collins. Cooper is a no brainer at #6, Parker and White would be a slight reach at #6. Can't see Landon Collins being drafted at #6, he's very talented, but another Safety and especially an Alabama secondary player in rd 1 wouldn't sit well with the Jet Fans, right or wrong. Rd 2 a linebacker could be a strong possibility. I really like Eric Kendricks , UCLA, he is a little undersized, but would fit better in a Dan Quinn's defense, who utilizes mostly a 4-3 defense, some 3-4. There is some good ILB/OLB talent in the 2-3 range. David Harris could be on Rex's next Team, Maybe ATL.
If Cooper is gone I would go OL, either Scherff or Stanley if he comes out. I know Scherff would probably be a guard in the NFL but that position is a HUGE need for us. If not OL, maybe trade down if possible and pick up either White, Strong, DGB or Parker. As for our second round pick, an OLB I don't see many on here talking about is Eli Harold. Hybrid pass rusher who is explosive off the edge, he should put on some more bulk though. If we go OL in the first, receivers I like for R2 are Funchess, DGB (if he is there). If we lose Harvin, Dorsett and Devin Smith are both viable options with the pick.
We are not going OT in 1st rd with 6th pick. Take it to the bank. We need playmakers on both sides of the ball. We will sign a free agent guard and the Oline will be fine.
Especially because drafting a guard is too much of a reach at 6, and that's probably our biggest need on the OL. How was Breno for us at RT this year? The OL is one of the hardest spots to evaluate for me. The basic word I've heard here on the board is that he was a downgrade from Austin Howard, but he was at least average. (Also, how did Austin Howard do this year?) A tackle would be a fine pick, but Brick is not worth replacing yet, and a RT doesn't appear to be the biggest need. Hell I really don't know (besides QB) what our biggest need even is. If the secondary is healthier next year, I can't really pin point any 1 position and think that it really sucks on this team. Yet we were still 4-12, so maybe I'm wrong.
We need CB, QB, WR, LB (including pass rusher). We do not need OT depth. If there is no CB worth the pick, the 2 QBs and Cooper are gone, we pick one of pass rushers.
I generally agree with that. But what if Mcdougle, and Dee stay healthy, and end up being a great 1-2 punch? What if we keep Percy, and he has a career year, with Decker also having a 1,000 yard season? See what I'm trying to say?
Yeah, take a OL and waste another year's draft. If they can't wait spend some of that 50 mil they will have on FA lineman and draft something they need today.
I do see what you are saying. But after MM, Jameis, and Cooper the value at top of draft is pass rusher. But generally speaking, you can't rely on Mcdougle or Dee being healthy. But there is no CB to pick at 6. Decker, Harvin, Kerley is OK. Harvin is unreliable due to injury/attitude past. So if Cooper is there and no QB avail, you take Cooper
I would like a WR in the first 3 rounds. I think we'll be ok at CB, but I wouldn't mind an upper/mid round pick on it. Like I said earlier, it all depends on who the HC is.
I want an Oline in the first round, preferably Scherff I don't want any part of Cooper. IMO he is the most overrated player coming out of college in quite a few years. 2 amazing play makers that may be there in the second are Dorial Green-Beckham and Todd Gurley. I would grab either of them in a heartbeat if they were there.
Everyone wants to move back, and I get it, but I think we'll end up taking an OLB. It would be panic overload here at TGG, but I've been wanting a high OLB pick for many years now.
People are projecting Scherff at RG. That's a heckuva reach on the 6 pick. The Jets have enough trouble turning college tackles into NFL guards as it is without the added pressure of it being the Gholston pick...
The value at # 6 will be a pass rusher. It would be nice to have one again after the huge void since we traded John Abraham away. With that being said trading down is the way to go. Kendricks would be a great pickup but I am not sure we get him with our second pick unless we trade up. Until the combine it is hard to predict where these guys will get drafted.
Everything I've read suggests that Scherff is just not that good. He doesn't even project to be a tackle, and taking even an elite guard is too early at the 6th pick is way too early. If we go OLine we need a future LT who can play guard or RT for a few years first. Maybe Peat is good enough? I think we will choose an OLB over an OLine prospect if it comes down to it (and our Qbs/Cooper aren't there).
If Quinn is the HC the odds on an OLB or DE pass rusher on the 6 go waaaaaay up. He needs one of those to make his 4-3 work. The Jets have gotten pressure by the combination of great interior pass rushers and blitzing DB's in the Rex era. That's not going to continue with a new defensive system in town. The OLB's who are good pass rushers are ancient at this point when you include the fact that Coples is not an OLB and will not be used that way in a 4-3.
There is nothing wrong with taking Brandon Scherff at 6 if you believe he's the BPA. He can play RT, LG, RG. If he can have a Zack Martin like impact on our offensive line then everyone here against Scherff at 6 will be eating crow. Gregory won't be available at 6, chances are Cooper will be there in which you take him no questions asked. Nate Orchard would be a great 2nd round selection that can play the "LEO" role in Quinn's defense. He can play 3-4 / 4-3
People need to look at Scherff's highlight reel. He holds on every single play. Unless he learns how to block properly, he's a walking penalty in the pros. I know it's taught that way, to keep your arms in, but I don't see many players getting away with that at the NFL level, mostly because he won't have the overwhelming strength advantage to not let his guy move enough laterally to expose the hold. I'm smelling bust on that pick. Just my two cents.
