I would say that this is just the first of the second round of interviews. Not sure it makes Maccagnan the favorite or anything.

Hoping he hires Doug Marrone. Thought Ballard was the guy Chicago had locked down? Guess not.

GM candidate Mike Maccagnan will be having dinner tonight w/ Woody Johnson to get better sense of how they interact/could work together #nyj

Meanwhile, Jets are reaching out to possible negotiators/experienced football execs to perhaps work with new GM, I'm told. #nyj

It seems Woody's trying to get to know our new possible GM.

this is why i was surprised Ballard was canceling all non-Bears interviews.
now he's got nothing in terms of GM opps.

agreed, really hope Pace takes Marrone with him, although i like the Bears.....so don't really wish that on them.
just as long as its not us..

Maybe this is me being unreasonable but it seems like there should be a rule against any teams hiring any coaches or front-end people until after the superbowl. As it is you're kind of screwed if your #1 guy isn't available until then due to his team playing in the superbowl and you end up not getting him. Your second choice could be long gone by then.

I was just talking about this with a buddy of mine.

It kind of makes things unfair. Let's say a teams top two candidates are Bowles and Quinn. Bowles is done and Quinn still might have a ways to go. Let's say Bowles gets an offer elsewhere that he is really thinking about taking. Now that said team is in a bad predicament. You can't talk to Quinn until the superbowl bye week. You can't negotiate and see what he wants until their season is over. But at the same time, you might lose Bowles to another team?

    Sucks man.

i think Maccagnan is the best available candidate at this point.
it's good that Wolf is signing off on the first interview, so we know it's not just a Casserly job networking exercise.

He's not very experienced outside of college scouting, so it's also good to hear they will pair him up with FO help.
the college scouting approach and overhaul is our number 1 objective.

so that's both my concerns with Maccagnan being adequately addressed.
if he's the guy, hire him now, and let him participate in getting the type of coach that works best with his team building approach..

I think too that Maccagnan is the best available candidate for us. He has scouting and personnel background, is a talent evaluator. He isn't a cap guy like Idzik was, so it's a very, very good approach to reaching out negotiatiors.

    To summarize:
    - Maccagnan is the only one who gets a chance for second interview
    - Wolf lead the first interview and he was also impressed regarding what he heard
    - a dinner with Woody to talk about how they could work together after the 2nd interview
    - reaching out negotiators

All this points show me that we already know who the new GM will be and the hiring is going to happen until this weekend (in my opinion).

When you put it like that, it's hard to understand why the NFL does not have such a rule already. I suppose the counter argument, such as it is, is that teams that are making big changes in the off season should be able to start as soon as they can, there being no reason to hang around waiting. In that context you end up making your decisions whether to wait or not, depending on how you assess the scenarios like the one you mention.

I don't think that's significant enough, and the current situation makes for too many anomalies.

there's no clear answer without inside info unfortunately.

the GM ultimately decides who to draft.
so unless you have any scout/director's scouting profile reports from years past, or inside info as to who they were banging the table for, it's a bit of a guessing game with these prospects. have to rely on Wolf and Casserly investigating these things from the inside.

occassionally you might find an interview giving some insight.
another poster put up this link yesterday, which i found interesting regarding Maccagnan's thought process.
