so why didn't we even make the playoffs w/ that "dominant" OL(which was very good but far from dominant by the way) and a HOF QB against a much weaker sched w/ no Brady in 2008? Now he is but not as a rookie and they nearly made title game w/ him as a rookie.
Because we didn't have nearly as good of a defense? I don't know why I have to keep explaining such an obvious thing to you. That and they went 9-7 both years.
the majority of Bills and Jets fans are not enamored with Marrone....myself included. how Woody, Casserly and Wolf view him is still unknown. i'm hoping they look elsewhere.
the D was good enough in a watered down AFC. Miami went from 1 win to 11 and won the division. the QB sucked b/c he didn't want to be here and he sabotaged our season. Our OLs were good/very good but they weren't the hogs so it's foolish to say they were why we made it. They certainly helped but our run games were not as good as they look on stat sheets.
he did a much better job that's for sure. I think Mangini can be a bog time coach but he tries to hard to be BB part II.
Only you could think the offensive success we did have in 2009 wasn't based on the 607 rushing attempts and #1 rush attack in the league. Brick, Faneca, Mangold, Moore & Woody were the best o-line in the league. I thought I'd give you a try for the new year - that was a mistake.
I watch games and don't just look at stat sheets. we had a good run game, the #s were skewed by some garbage time yards and 3-4 games where we ran for 200-300+ against bad teams.
WGR had some interesting stats regarding Marrone and some of the other available coaching candidates: 4th and 1 past your own 40 yard line , the percentage of times these coaches went for it: Hue Jackson: 67% Jim Schwartz: 60% Mike Shanahan: 57% Rex Ryan: 56% Pat Shurmur: 43% Doug Marron: 32% And this shows why Bills fans were frustrated with Marrone..........ultra conservative! It could be 4th and 5 on the opponents 45 yards line down by 2 scores with 4 minutes to go and Marrone would always punt!!!! It was so frustrating , it's like he never understood that punting the ball just allows the opposing team to kill another 2+ minutes or force you to use timeouts when your only going to get so many possesions to try and win the game. The more and more I think about Marrone the happier I am that he's gone. The 9-7 record was great , but 1 win was a gift wrapped win by the Pats........the Chiefs and Raiders losses proved that he's a mediocre coach just by how conservative his approach was.
Showing me this stat tells me nothing unless I know what happened as a result of the decision. IE, I assume the punt changed field position and buried the opposing team inside the 20? What happened then? Also, the coaches you list are not exactly at the head of the list of all-time greats. Maybe their mediocre records can be explained by their recklessness for going for it so often on 4th down.
It's the list of all available former HCs. MARRONE is beyond conservative .... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I get what the list is. Those stats alone still tell me nothing And I know it's a list of available ex-coaches. I could just as easily argue that these coaches are currently "available" because of their recklessness on 4th & 1 (remember, Marrone is the only one on that list who wasn't "fired" )
I'm not a fan of going for it on 4th down on your own side of the ball or for that matter outside the other team's 45 unless you are trailing late in the game. An occasional fake is ok but nothing idiotic like what we saw in the Miami game 10 days ago. It worked but if it hadn't we'd have given them the ball in FG range with 4 min left in the game and us with a 3 point lead. But inside the opponents 45 I go for it most of the time on a 4th and 1 esp if the other team has been moving the ball.
Marrone wasn't fired nor was he offered an extension....but no one cried when opted out.....he also had one of the leagues best defenses thanks to Jim Schwartz...who the Bills will retain...I'm sure if it came down to either keeping Marrone or Schwartz it would be Schwartz 10 out of 10 times for them.... Statistically, you should convert something like 75% of 4th and 1s. Teams punt far too often in those situations, for sure.
75 sounds high. I go for it in the opponents territory like inside their 45. But not on my own 30 with a 3 point lead with 4 min left in the game like Rex did against Miami.
Would you go for it if you were down two scores in the 4th quarter ...with 4th and 3inches from your opponents 48? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
