Geno is cheap and I believe he's improving, just not quickly enough for most around here. We have to keep him. I do not want to see another rookie QB as our starter. None of the QBs in this draft appears to be a franchise QB so why bother? It is a waste of a pick and sets us up for more failure. I'm fine with signing or trading for an experienced QB with warts like Bradford, Cutler, Locker, or RGIII, and starting them over Geno. It would certainly be an improvement over where we have been the past 6 years.
I'd like the Jets to take a chance on Bradford. Bring him in to compete with Geno and Simms, and release Vick.
And while we're at it, why not take a chance on Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder, Jimmy Clausen, or Branden Weeden? ....let's face it, Geno Smith is the starter in 2015, unless they draft Mariota or Winston.
I disagree. Geno will most likely be the starter if Morningwood is still around. If a new OC comes in I think his chances go down dramatically compared to whatever vet we sign in the offseason.
You could be right about that .... but are there any FA vets at the position worth considering as a starter, as more than a stop gap option? At least Geno has some upside potential, however inconsistent and mistake-prone he's been thus far. .....("Morningwood" lol!)
Sam Bradford has had more success than any of those guys, perhaps combined. He's losing his job to injury, not to pitiful play as those four have. It seems like a moot point though as the Rams apparently want him back in 2015 and who can blame them with this class of free agents and draft prospects. I think they have to look into trading for a QB such as Mike Glennon, Zach Mettenberger, Kirk Cousins or someone else along those lines to compete with Geno and then an additional free agent like Matt Moore... Unless there's a QB this regime really likes in the draft, but it's a really underwhelming group
I'd have to agree with your bolded statement. Here's the thing...and hopefully Woody gets it. Winston is just too much of a wild card to take at this stage of the NY Jets existence. As much as he could be a savior of sorts he could also put the nails in the coffin of this franchise (figuratively). There simply is too much dirt on this guy for some of it NOT to be true. Rape allegations aside. The team would be much better served in filling one of the MANY other problem areas. Now, one thing we ALL have to keep in mind is that it wasn't all that long ago that the average QB took 2 - 4 years to become any kind of consistent and productive. Geno has shown us flashes like the Miami game. We KNOW he's capable it's just a matter of bringing out the consistency. At some point we have to recognize that not everyone can be Russell Wilson or Andrew Luck. 2015 is the year for Geno to show us that. He's cheap, the FA landscape is horrid and the only solid draft option will be gone. Also, it adds intrigue to a HC candidate like Frank Reich... Having been a QB himself...like Harbaugh would that translate into being able to bring out that consistency in Geno? One way or another, thanks to the poor FA crop and the draft the way it is...we ARE going to get an opportunity to find out...soon.
On the heels of my above reply and to add another name to the QB list... Depending upon HC hire, a question has to be answered...HAS our own Simms been given a "fair" shot to compete as well? It's not been a HUGE sample size but nearly every single time he's had the opportunity to get on the field he's looked, for the most part, pretty good. Obviously there are the factors such as level of competition etc...but has our own depth at QB been full explored and given every opportunity?? Just another variable on the pile of Empire State sized variables.
Good post. I agree with the bolded part especially. I think Winston is actually a better pro prospect than Mariota, but I do agree that the off-the-field issues are worrisome. I actually thought Geno would be a bust when he was drafted, but now, after seeing the flashes, I'm not so sure....he's still only 24, so maybe with more maturity and experience he will iron out the wrinkles in his game, so to speak. I agree we should give him one more year.
Smith won't start for the Jets next year. The whole idea of firing Idzik and Ryan would be wasted if they let the main reason for that to return.
Nice to see he was signed to a futures deal where he'll at least be in camp with the other new QBs and for the new regime to reevaluate. Can't hurt and maybe he'll show enough to stick or warrant a chance. Now, my guess will be that he doesn't even make the practice squad in 2015, but at least he'll have a shot and it'd be pretty cool/funny if he actually did turn some heads
Putting aside the balance of Don's posting history here for a moment, heh, the logic here seems inescapable to me. Only caveat is that Idzik arguably misplayed the Cb position situation even worse than Qb. But imo any GM who ends up leaving Smith as the starter on Opening Day would be playing with a huge fire, and would get burned for it big time. Ftr I see no point in debating Smith's value at this point. I merely am pointing out the logic of firing Idzik in particular does seem to lead to the conclusion that any scenario leaving Smith in place is a contradiction.
I would have preferred Bradford, but even before Christmas it did not look like the Rams were going to let him go. I have not checked the Chicago media lately, but assuming Cutler might still be available, he's still probably the most likely/best option going forward for a decent vet Qb.
I can live with Geno as the starter as long as his eventual replacement is drafted this year. I think a season on the bench will allow Winston time to mature as a person and learn the NFL game. But do not rush Winston as the starter. I hope Jet fans would be patient enough to take their lumps with Geno and wait just a season before sending Winston in.
My posting history is fine, the inescapable truth is a lot of what I have to say just pisses off the fanboys.
