Fans around the country think Rex is a clown for shooting his mouth off about how great his players are and then not proving it on the field. He did not help our teams profile at all just added to the idea the team is a circus.
Tannenbaum was the GM for 6 seasons. That showed stability. He had 6 years to work on things, did some good, some bad, in the end his firing was justified because of the cap situation the Jets were in while being on a downward spiral. He would have had to do the same thing Idzik did to get the Jets out of it and he wouldnt have survived the 8-8 season (if thats what they would have done under him) in 2013 IMO. The weird situation the Jets were in was that Rex, at that point was probably the most successful and beloved coach in franchise history. It didnt make any sense to fire him after 2012. He deserved the opportunity to turn the ship around. Tannenbaum, IMO, did not. In hindsight, what the Jets should have done was keep both and give them the 2013 season to turn things around in the right direction. Woody could have then fired both after the season if things still didnt work out and move on with a fresh slate. The only problem with that though is that we probably arent in as good a cap situation as we are now simply because Tannenbaum is more aggressive than Idzik and would have been GMing for his job in the league and looking for instant results. The other option was saying the hell with it and fire Rex as well after 2012. The GM job would have then been very highly coveted because of the fact that Tannebaum was with the Jets for a long time. But forcing a coach on GM candidates is going to turn a lot away. Thats what happened. Idzik took the job anyway (which someone was bound to do), Woody realized his mistake and fired him after only 2 seasons. So people now are looking at the Jets job very cautiously.
The first thing we need to ask about when considering how to answer the OP is what is the "here" that is referred to? It might be simple enough to say "the Jets, with all their history, their current condition including ownership, the location in the NY area which includes the Giants, the NY media, the local culture (however that differs from the usual)..." Point being, that's not very simple, is it? But if one accepts the "here" is a combination, or more accurately an amalgamated mix, messy but both coherent and incoherent in various ways at different times, then we begin to see it's not such an easy question to answer. For starters I for one do think the NY area is part of the answer. Someone rightly pointed out that the NY area, in terms of the NFL, is unique in having the local market divided between Giant and Jet fans. And not evenly divided, either. But putting that aside, ANYONE coming to the Jets will know that there will be a contingent of people, local people, calling into radio shows, subscribing to media outlets, who are not going to be rooting for your team's success. How does that factor in? Well, it probably does for the weakminded and thinskinned. Not that one shouldn't be thin skinned at times, but for this question, I think you would have to take that into account, and discount it. If you can't, well don't take the job. And then of course there is the famous NY sports media. Which in fact has no real equal anywhere else. Not only in terms of the number of outlets, but also with somewhat divided loyalties given the Giants. And the local culture. Hm. I think that's a real factor, especially if you go outside of NYC. Sure Philly has it asshat fans, as does New England. But if you succeed, it balances out. In fact I think on the whole the whole NYC area thing balances out. You get more upside in positive attention of you do well. I think that's why Decker came here, for example. Some find the environment overwhelming, literally so. But if you can make it here and all that - it's for real. So put that aside. Then we get to the ownership and the relation of him to recent Jet history. Yes, that is problematic. Who can deny it? But... it doesn't mean the Jets are in a whole other worse category than someplace like DC. Still, we should probably admit if we were not Jet fans, and wanted to get a nice rewarding not too difficult and sometimes fun job, we probably wouldn't start with being the GM for the Jets. I just don't think it's quite all that bad a situation IF Johnson will give the new guy some discretion how to run the team free from interference of too great a magnitude.
This was going on before Idzik was hired. Just look at the circus atmosphere created by the Jets braintrust when they brought Tebow in here. That was only the beginning. If you're a good enough candidate and very confident in your plan, then the Jets shouldn't scare you. The scariest aspect is probably dealing with the media for someone who's not used to this market. Yet if enough money is being offered, then the fear factor goes out the window real fast.
Yeah, since the Idzik thing, coming here as the GM is gotta be seen as a dangerous career move in the NFL circles. The only logical explanation for what happened with Idzik is that Woody backstabbed him the moment media and fans went really toxic. The next GM will be able to manage that to some degree by just not trusting whatever Woody says and realizing that he cant actually rebuild and just has to put a competitive team right away even if it means killing your championship chances long term, but who wants to work a difficult job with a lying, two-faced owner easily swayed by public opinion? Probably only guys who can't get other, more attractive gigs. Btw, now that the whole media bias thing is coming out with Manish vs Marrone, I hope people also realize the entire local media was just as biased against Idzik. He didn't try very hard to please them, so they wrote up all kinds of negative shit about him.
You must be a new Jet fan, which would explain part of the ill informed nature of your posts here. But not all. For the rest we would have to look to... But I digress. Anyway, the last time the Jets fired their GM was following a six year tenure by such person, and it was much more of a circus than we have seen so far. Yes I am sure Johnson is still problematic, but not because he fired Idzik after two years. I have yet to hear from a competent observer, which obviously excludes you, that Idzik deserved to be retained based on anything concrete that he did for the team.
Don't believe the media, money talks. And if someone doesnt take the money, it's because they are patient, and think they wil get something better in the next few years. Take the guy Decastro from the Ravens, if Ozzie Newsome was 5 years younger he would have came to the Jets, but because Newsome is going to retire he'll take the Ravens job. Another analogy: It's no different then waiting to be the CEO of Exxon, or jumping ship and taking the CEO job of a start-up.
Your post would sound better if you had gotten the second bolded part right. Tanenbaum was our GM for seven years.
Other than this being yet another inaccurate and duechy post by you, it also has NOTHING to do with the topic at hand. Rex is gone, so he has no bearing on new GM and HC candidates considering this job. you should read more and post less.
Of course. Just look at what disgruntled Jet fans have done: Raising money to put up billboards, flying aerial banners over practice fields..what other fan base does shit like that? The organization from top to bottom is a joke.
Reich was Boomers back up QB in college if I remember correct and they have been freinds ever since, obviously that puts him in a akward situation in a job where your suppose to be impartial
This is going to be true no matter who gets hired and where they get hired whether its for the NYJ or for the Jaguars. The perfect example is Rex Ryan. Absolutely loved his first 2-3 years then when the team struggled, he quickly fell out of our good graces. It's going to happen, coaches are going to have their bad seasons and if they are a good coach then they will rebound from it and show they are truly the man for the job. Whoever we hire, they have to be able to deal with the media and the constant fan complaints that happen week in and week out whether your 16-0 or 0-16.
certain organizations are hotbeds for scrutiny. high profile markets, large and/or opinionated fan bases, questionable ownership, notions of cluelessness, no recent championships, and a local/national media that believes in blowing things out of proportion for ratings. The Jets, Redskins, Cowboys, even Bears and Eagles all fit this description to a varying degree. you take any of those jobs, people will always have something to say, and likely not in a fair or objective way. the Jets in particular, have the most toxic media situation out of anyone. taking on one of these jobs, you have to recognize all this, and want the challenge anyway. Takes a strong personality. Succeeding in any of these places with a Super Bowl will be unlike anywhere else as a result. if you prefer much less attention, go to Jacksonville. that's not the type of candidate that will work here.
I'm sorry, were you responding to anyone with that post? I'm pretty sure you were not. you post 100 times a day, and it all is the same thing blaming Rex for everything. usually off topic, and without merit. it's irritating to say the least.
Promoted to GM in 06, fired in 12. Anyway, you missed the main point. Particularly since THE LONGER an example in question might be, the better my point. If you were a Jet fan in 12, you would have remembered that the controversies following his termination and replacement were more than are going on now. They certainly were not less. For someone who had been here far longer than Idzik. Try to focus on the important stuff. You swing and miss, yet again. Ftr, I will apologize for my poor math in identifying the SEASONS covered. Btw Tanny it needs to be noted went back with the Jets to 97, and had important responsibilities before being given the GM title, so there's that as well.
That is f--cking SAD. I've been a Jet fan since the NY Titan days and I take every lost to heart. I love My NY Jets..
Don't read it or block me out. A poster earlier on this thread talked about how people he knows love the Jets because of Rex. Even Giants fans. Off topic but he brought it up.
