They got to the AFC Championship Game because they had a veteran offensive line, a couple of decent backs and a coach who kept the players motivated despite the losses that the overall lack of talent at key positions caused now and then. The Jets weren't a top team at any point during those runs. They were just the hot team at the right time with the right scheme for their talent. Sort of like the Giants on their two Super Bowl runs.
Mangini, the one guy who was not here for the great playoff runs gets so much credit for them while the guys that were actually part of them (Tanny, Rex and Sanchez) get none by so many Jets fans. What a very very strange fan base.
2009 we weren't a top team in reg season but did get hot at right time. 2010 we were top team most of season and proved 2009 wasn't a fluke w/ another great postseason run.
The bold is revisionist history. I recall several pundits picking the Jets to go to the Super Bowl prior to the 2010 season. Rex even made reference to the expectations on Hard Knocks. We were also a Super Bowl favorite midway through the 08 season.
I think it's silly to eliminate Mangini from the equation. The GM and HC work together with a bunch of other people to build a team. It's not as simple as crediting one person and discrediting all the others . Both of them were key players in building the Jets from '06 to '08 and so both Tanny & Mangini helped build the teams that won in 2009 & 10.
Yup, Gholston was on those teams. Except for Vernon, Tanny and Mangini drafted pretty well: Rex and Tanny had a much worse track record. Outside of Mo Wilk, the first and second rounders have underpeformed what you'd expect from their draft positions: Teams probably should consider Mangini as a personnel guy if he was influencing those earlier drafts. He's probably a lot better at personnel than coaching players. Also, while Mangini was with the Browns they drafted Alex Mack and Joe Hayden. No idea what kind of input he had there.
They didn't start 2009 as a top as in top 5 team overall. I'll agree. They had a top defense and top offensive line as constructed though. Certainly top 10 overall though (which was brad way's argument). Skill players brought them down in TC and early in the year but Tannenbaum made the savvy move to trade for Edwards and then they had arguably a top 5 team. 2010 they had a top 4 roster all year, maybe the best top to bottom roster in the league and in franchise history
maybe it's just coincidence or Mangini would be getting FO looks? 2010 was the only really bad draft. 2009 brought 3 starters on a championship game team 2011 brought Mo, Ellis(underrated guy) and Kerley 2012 Coples, Davis and Allen but they get overshadowed by awfu; Hill pick
I wouldn't go that far about 2010. we had a talented team but top 4? best in franchise history may be a stretch but it was talented and fun to watch.
Didn't he do that when rex was his HC? When it was he and Mangini, I don't believe he traded away many picks. I'll have to do some research but I believe that to be the case.
The bold is even more revisionist history. The Jets #1 ranked defense in 2009 was 16th in 2008 and had 5 new starters. There were guys brought in on offense, defense and STs after Mangini that played major roles on our playoff runs. Mangini played a role but there is no way in hell I'm going to give him credit over the guys that were actually in the building. It's ridiculous. Mind you I'm a big Mangini fan and didn't think we should have let him go when we did. EDIT: I just realize you weren't talking about from 08 t0 09 so excuse the "revisionist history" comment. Still I'll contest that the roster on the defensive side of the ball was not that talented in 09. Rex's scheme had more to do with how good we were not the personnel.
It's hard to say they were a top 4 roster overall with Mark Sanchez as the starting QB yes.. but QBs make inferior rosters better that's why they didn't win the whole thing but they had a better roster outside the QB position than anyone in the league. The Packers won the whole thing that year- there's no way they had a better overall roster than the Jets, just Aaron Rodgers & McCarthy to put them over the top. I'd say the best rosters in the NFL that year, QBs included was Jets/Colts/Packers/Patriots... the Jets were probably last of those 4 because they didn't have the great QBs of the other 3 maybe the franchise history comment was a stretch though. 1998 was a better roster. And 1986 possibly as well. I wasn't alive for the world champion Jets so Idk about that roster
The Jets made 4 picks in 2007 and 6 in 2008. Counting the 10 pick draft in 2006 they made 20 picks in the 3 years that Tannenbaum and Mangini were together. Then when Rex arrived they made only 15 in the next 3 years. 2 of the missing picks were for Kris Jenkins with 2009 picks traded in 2008 for Mangini's team. Then the Jets did that again for Braylon Edwards in 2009, robbing 2010's draft and the rout was on.
