I actually mostly agree with Junc here. Tannenbaum was good for this organization and should be viewed favorably by Jets fans It was the right time to move on from him when they did but that doesn't mean we should as fans trash him or engage in revisionist history. Leave that to loser fan bases/organizations. Tannenbaum was a decent General Manager and after watching Idzik kick himself in the balls for 2 years I have a greater appreciation..
Yep, i don't recall this fan base bitching when we were in postseason contention 4 stright seasons, 4 playoff wins, 2 afc championships.... Hypocrites everywhere.
Forgot he traded up with Dallas for Clemens. Just my god, there hasn't been one year he's kept his draft picks has there during his tenure?
he was our cap guy but taking orders from Parcells and then Bradway. it looked like we were in cap hell a couple of times but the reality is he knew what he was doing and we were easily out of cap hell w/ a few expected simple moves.
Tanny drafted really well when Mangini was here. He drafted poorly when Rex was here. There is little doubt he was taking a lot of input from his head coaches. If he had a decent guy picking the players for him, he'd be great since he's pretty damn good with the cap and pulling off trades.
He put all the fruits in the basket for a 2 year run. That is never good news moving forward. You should be able to find talent in the draft where you are picking, talent drops everywhere. I am never a fan of trading up for this reason. The Redskins are still haunted to this day for the RG3 trade up for example. Raiders bit the dust for the Carson Palmer trade. I don't mind a draft pick trade here or there but when you start getting crazy with it where you only come out with 3 or 4 player drafts, that becomes a problem.
That's not true at all. you are being very unfair. For starters, top 10 roster isn't setting the bar very high. That's a playoff team. He created multiple top 10 rosters here.... Blame the coaches for not getting them over the top if ya want but surely don't make the claim those coaches worked up inferior talent
Found this on Rotoworld: Dolphins hired ex-Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum as executive vice president of football operations. Tannenbaum's title is a fancy way of saying he'll be owner Stephen Ross' new football czar, a la Mike Holmgren in Cleveland. He spent the past year as a "consultant" to Ross. It's an ominous development for GM Dennis Hickey and coach Joe Philbin, though both should be safe for 2015. Amazingly, Philbin is expected to continue reporting directly to Ross. Hickey will likely be demoted, even if he retains his "GM" title. General manager of the Jets from 2006-12, Tannenbaum didn't stand out as a man deserving of a second chance to oversee someone's entire football operation, but the Dolphins rarely make sound decisions. Tannenbaum was an abject disaster his final years in the Big Apple, though did have the good sense to hire Rex Ryan, and oversaw a roster that made back-to-back AFC Championship Games. Either way, Ross is grasping at straws with his latest dart-board throw.
He was the capologist in 2005? And I'm not saying it was his fault, just saying that the Jets were at or near the cap his entire tenure and they never had anything like an elite roster over the 7 years. Basically the Jets paid a lot for proven players and even more to retain their own players and never got to the point where you could look at them and see a Super Bowl team in the making.
Probably not. Strangely, most of the guys he traded up for (i.e., Revis, Harris, Sanchez, Greene, Keller…etc.) were better than the players than the ones he stood pat for and picked (i.e., Gholston, Wilson, Ducasse…etc).
The Jets went to the AFC Championship Game with Mark Sanchez at QB twice in a row. If that's not working well with inferior talent I don't know what qualifies.
Very true. I think he did that because of his beginnings as a cap guy... naturally taking the role of trusting his HCs input in drafting after that. I don't think it's a coincidence that he drafted worse once Mangini was gone and he had to take input from Rex. But he did hire Rex though so it's hard to give him an excuse for that. One thing about him was that he wasn't married to building a team a certain way. A HC wants to run a certain system? fine- he went out and got players that fit that system. That might be what causes his downfall in Miami though because Philbin sucks.
We all loved Tanny at one point...especially when his fat ass fell over itself fielding punts on hard knocks
they got to the AFC Championship with Mark Sanchez because they had a talented roster around him- duh
As junc already point out he was managing the cap then not making decisions on who should get what. Interestingly enough as soon as he was hired he did pretty much the same thing that Idzik got a ton of praise for, which was to rid the team of all the bad contracts.
yep, Gholston was on those teams. why isn't anyone hiring Mangini as GM? he is a guru, he picked all our good players while Tannenbaum picked all the bad ones.
