Correct. This is what I feel people mean by "full control". Let the owner spend the money and keep his nose out of the football operations unless need be. Hire a guy you trust to take complete control of football.
All I know is if I was a random name front office guy and worked my life to become a General Manager I sure as HELL wouldn't turn down a job, let alone an interview. The real losers here are those guys. DeCosta I can somewhat see if he's well compensated and assured as the heir apparent but this guy from KC and the Minny guy.. You got to be kidding me. They are one bad draft class or ownership change from looking for work as a scout. You gotta strike while the irons hot
I have this thing about DeCosta. I do not believe promises from businessmen. Particularly promises that might occur 2 or 3 years from now. If the Ravens start to slide and Ozzie decides to leave before it gets too bad, are they guaranteed to hire the guy who has been overseeing the decline at his side?
The guy is getting paid GM money and probably working in an organization he likes and with people he likes and knows very well. His roots are in the Baltimore area. His family and friends are there - don't know if he has kids or not but if so there family and friends are too. Why would he uproot his family and leave a cushy job for the same pay in NY where he's possibly out the door 2 years later when some dipshit fans who think they know everything pressure the owner to send him packing?
Maybe because it's a GM job, only 32 of them in the world, where you run the show and not be someone's assistant? Why not bet on yourself.. Like I said in my original post- DeCosta may be a different situation with his roots and firmly entrenched in that organization so my thoughts are more about the other guys turning down interviews. If someone is afraid to take the job because a few jackasses put up some billboards for the last guy then we don't want them as GM here anyway. I don't think that's the reason they are turning down interviews but if it is.. good riddance.
For what? He's doing very similar work there, probably less responsibility but still team building. What would be the payback for him to go GM somewhere else?
You don't see the draw in being the head man? In building something yourself? In making a name for yourself? They don't put assistant GM/scouts in the hall of fame by the way
I think being the head man comes with a lot of headaches regardless of where you are. If you can get paid the same to be his assistant and do similar work that's a pretty good gig.
I hate to say it...but I think we are going to be having the same conversation in 3-4 years again. I dont like the upcoming QBs, I dont like the pool of Headcoaches, I am not impressed by the GMs we are looking at.
I understand your point, but you can only take it so far. One or two guys without a sack not even taking an interview? Sure, that might be the case. But as the number grows... I think DaCosta was an exception all along for the reasons mentioned. He's already getting paid well and if for some reason the Ravens do not elevate him soon, he can go somewhere else later. If I were him, I'd stay put and play it out. Ballard is a more tricky situation. Mike Westoff was tooting Ballard's horn last week, and Mike was making sense to me. But it does seem Ballard sees the Bears as his dream job. Still one would think he'd at least interview with the Jets, if for nothing else leverage, unless he's already come to terms with Chicago, which does not seem to be the case. But some of the other guys... Let's just say we have to acknowledge Johnson has been problematic in this situation since he insisted on retaining an HC who went 6-10 two years ago, and is now talking up the real possibility of yet again hiring an HC before the new GM has any input on that. In addition to the other hair on Woody. To be clear I am not in the Panic Mode school of thought here, not yet, anyway. But we all knew there'd likely be some problems in this search due to Johnson's past history.
Look, Woody didn't grow up a confirmed Jets fan like we did. He owns the team so he roots for them. If he owned the Bucs he'd love TB. He's a rich guy who gave himself an expensive present: an NFL franchise. This is his toy to play with. So he has to be involved no matter what.
Everyone says this. The pool of head coaches is ALWAYS underwhelming because certified "successful" head coaches are never on the market. It's all about what happens when we give an untested or retread HC the opportunity to be successful. I am worried about the Qb situation, though; without a Qb over then ext 3-4 years, we very well may stagnate and have to build like the Lions... through top 5 draft picks year after year. That would suck. That's also why I (personally) would be willing to give Winston a shot, should he be available at our draft position.
This is what I've been saying all along. Maybe Woody truly doesn't want to relinquish full control to anyone, regardless of how qualified they are. If that's the case, then this franchise will never be whole again until he sells it because he's knows less than nothing about anything football related. Hopefully this is just more media bs.
