I personally think this fanbase would be A-OK with a top-tier elite receiver.

It's always easy to diminish trades after the fact but Atlanta easily won that trade and selected a dominating player.

No. They didn't. They did better than the Browns for sure, but ultimately the trade was a lose-lose situation.

Maybe the Browns did a terrible job drafting, but Atlanta should still have never traded so much for one player, even someone as spectacular as Julio. The biggest reason the Falcons have a losing record over the past few years is due to a lack of depth, particularly on defense.

Giving away 5 picks for one top pick diminishes any depth that a team might have. Also, just because the Browns didn't utilize those picks well doesn't mean the Falcons wouldn't have if the trade had not gone through.

I just don't buy that a trade four drafts ago is still crippling the franchise today. They still had six selections in the 2011 and 2012 draft. Their problem is as fundamental as any other team out there in the NFL which is the poor allocation of those draft picks and the fact that they tend to focus too much on fixing one position at a time and then fill in the rest.

2012 was the offensive line and protection for Matt Ryan, the next year it was the secondary. You need to balance a draft amongst needs not take a boat load of players at the same position and pray one of them works out.

It's also tough to blame injuries but 2014 is a completely different year for the Falcons if 4 out of 5 of their starting offensive lineman aren't on IR by week 9.

The Falcons gave away their rebuild with the Jones deal. They put all their chips on Matt Ryan with a pair of dominating outside WR's and then one of the WR's started to age and the other got hurt. The move made the Falcons the only team with a "franchise" QB to go under .500 in back to back seasons for many years.

Their problem was not that they traded up for Julio Jones.

That was one of the best trades in NFL history.

Their problem is that their best pass rusher, John Abraham got old and their defense sucks.

Now they are in great position to get a very good pass rusher without even trading up.

The Falcons could be in the playoffs next year.

The Falcons have won 2 fewer games than the Jets the last two seasons with Matt Ryan on the roster. Come on now...

You can blame the coaching staff for that. They are in a MUCH better place than these Jets are. I'll trade this roster for theirs in a heartbeat. A franchise QB and a top 5 WR is all you need to easily build around and worth any trade that sacrifices bottom of the roster players.

Are you saying that the extra picks the Falcons gave up for Jones, the 59th and 124th pick in the same draft and the 1st and the 4th the next year should have been valued as bottom of the roster players?

They gave up a 2 1sts, a 2nd and 2 4th's to take Jones. That should have been 3 starting players to the one they got.

They didn't give up 2 1sts, that's a swing job. They upgraded their current shitty first to get a great WR to pair with their good young QB.
    So basically a 2nd, 2 4ths and a bottom 20s 1st the following year.

All those players would not be as good as Jones is and it's a slam dunk idea to pair your good young QB with a star WR.

all those picks worked out for the browns right?

There's a time and place to make a move and mortgage some of your future. In that instance Atlanta was in the perfect time or place. They almost made it to one SB and they will bounce back big time and be a force in the future because of the Ryan/Jones pair.

Well, they're 10-22 the last two years with their franchise QB in house. The coach just got fired and barring a big improvement this year the GM will follow him.

Sounds like they got a great deal.

Atlanta had the worst pass defense in the NFL for 14. That could be easily fixed with some good Cb's. Shows you how important the Cb position is.

The best situation for ANY team is to have a Defensive minded HC (Ryan, Belicheck, Carroll, etc) and a franchise QB on the other side of the ball. That's really all any team needs.

If Rex takes the Falcons job with Matt Ryan and Julio Jones already in place, he will win MULTIPLE SBs in the next 5-7 yrs.

Jets? They can hire anyone they want but without a QB they are a team with a fan base that will hire pilots and rent bill boards to demand a thorough house cleaning every 5-7 years.

Atlanta's CB's were taken in the 1st and 2nd round of the 2013 draft. Their safeties were taken in 2nd round in 2009, the 7th round in 2013 and the 4th round in 2008.

Shows you how important the safety position is.

Atlanta has had no pass-rush for like 2 or 3 yrs now.

If Atlanta had a pass rush, they could take some heat off the secondary, the fact that the Ravens can go on the road and minimize, not stop Ben, is a credit to their emphasis on bldg a defense around their DL and LB.

The Falcons have the potential for an excellent team, the have made the mistake of bldg around their corners instead of the DL and LB, they also put together a small defense trying to take advantage of the fast field, but that philosophie has also come back to hurt them.

If Rex takes the Falcons job he'll likely give them an immediate boost on the defensive side of the ball and they might have a 1-2 year window to win a ring. After that I'd expect the offensive side to rapidly deteriorate as Rex pushes his GM for defensive players while ignoring the development of any offensive players taken and being stubborn with replacing starters on offense regardless of how bad they are.

Eventually they'd end up at about the same point the Jets are now.

This is the dumbest post I have read in quite a long time. Just idiotic and completely detached from reality.
