good franchises don't let good coaches go so easily. Imagine if NYG got rid of coughlin when the fans wanted him out TWICE! he had no talent to work with(little talent to work with) in recent years. it's not just about wins and losses, he doesn't have a Tom Brady to rescue him.
I just saw this comedy- "Mangini's teams". so Mangini, who couldn't win w/ "his teams" is some genius even though he wasn't picking players and it's Rex's fault he got more out of "Mangini's players" than Mangini could? wouldn't that make Rex a better coach? and why aren't teams breaking down Mangini's door to become GM w/ his excellent track record of never making picks?
It's always just about wins and losses. I don't think Rex is a terrible head coach, but this (surprisingly widespread) notion that he is somehow a top head coach that we just couldn't afford to let go is pure CACA. The guy has lost more games than he has won in 6 full seasons at the helm. That's not elite. So . . Still waiting for the plethora of examples that would even remotely justify the statement above. Take your time
Rex does some things better than Mangini - obviously he's a much better people person. Obviously he's much better with defenses - better than most actually. Rex does some things worse than Mangini - the most glaring of which is developing players outside of d-linemen. While coaches are usually not the GM, they do have input into who is drafted and they are responsible for developing players that are drafted. Both have glaring holes as head coaches and were not well rounded enough to get the job done here. Maybe some day they'll learn to overcome those weaknesses.
it took an injury ravaged, no QB 6th season to get him below .500. top 10 does not equal elite, I never called him elite but he is one of the best coaches in the game which is why he is in high demand the second we let him go but don't worry. we'll get the great Doug Marrone and have to start over again in another 2-3 years.
I think some folks think that because a coach gets interviewed for HC openings he's somehow "in demand" for HC openings. The truth is, until he actually gets an offer to coach a team, he's not necessarily in demand. Lots of coaches are called to interview for all these openings, Are they all "in demand?" It's called due diligence. If Rex gets the Atlanta job, it will be a sure sign Blank is making the call. One poster informed me that the Falcons wanted him last time they had an opening, and another said it was when Dimitrov became GM he didn't like him. I have a hard time visualizing him and Pioli wanting Rex.
CJ here is some info I found regarding the first Rex interview. Blank, a native of Queens, is a Ryan fan. The owner came away with a favorable impression of the then-Ravens defensive coordinator during the head coaching interview process in 2008. Two sources believed that Ryan had the inside track at the time thanks to a solid first interview with Blank and team president Rich McKay before general manager Thomas Dimitroff was hired. Dimitroff took part in Ryan’s second interview and ultimately preferred Jaguars defensive coordinator Mike Smith. Ryan went back to Baltimore for a year before the Jets hired him.
Your boy Sanchez didn't play in 2012 when the team went 6-10? That would be 2 seasons under .500. The same amount he has over .500 and one of those is thanks to the Colts.
They have no receivers because they don't prioritize having great receivers? They've been G&P for 3 years now to the tune of 36-12 with nary a great receiver in the conversation. They've done this because they like G&P with that defense. It lets them control the games.
Heard Rex is drawing interest from the Bills. For some reason i can picture rex there, but not saving them.
Regarding special teams, this is also a pretty good indicator that the bottom of your roster is bereft of talent. Which is amazing considering all the draft picks we had to use last season. I want more than anything to believe that explains Idzik's ouster. If it was because of his press conference or the nitwits with the billboards, the Jets are basically doomed no matter what follows now.
After Miami game..Rex was overheard on the plane telling staff that "most likely Atlanta" is their next gig....which he interviewed for before going to the Jets.
Mangini was a good D Coordinator so I'm not giving Rex that over him. I saw too many D breakdowns over six seasons to give him even that. I read in Newsday I think that Rex interviews with the Falcons on Tuesday and that they're very interested. I would consider this a step down for them if they fire Smith and hire Rex. Maybe they think he can rebuild their defense. Sure, if you give him all Pro Bowlers.
