We need to see what happens before we assume the same structure will be in place. If he hires two guys who know each other and are simpatico it could make all the difference in the world. It's not like he does the same thing every time he makes a sweeping change. In 2001 he hired Bradway and then Herm, knowing that the two of them were able to work together because they'd both been part of KC and knew each other well. In 2006 he promoted Tannenbaum and let Tannenbaum hire Mangini. In 2009 he hired Rex Ryan with Tannenbaum's approval. In 2013 he hired John Idzik and kept Rex on because he thought Rex could still do the job. If he hires two guys who know each other and can work together it's going to look more like 2001 than anything else and that's not a bad thing. The mythical GM who can do it all is not out there right now. The few who seem to have the chops are locked up tight by their respective teams or in their 70's. The coaches you might hand that type of role too, the Grudens, the Cowhers, etc, have never done it before and had tendencies towards conflict in the organizations they coached in - making them a risk as the overmaster. There is no available college majordomo and those moves tend to blow out as often as they work. I'd be willing to watch a Marrone-simpatico GM or Dan Quinn-simpatico GM combo for the next 3 years. It'd be a departure from the circus and a move towards a more normal roster situation and it might well be very successful in the end.
they should just thank heavens that there is no second division in football and so no threat of relegation like there is in most major Soccer leagues - every team is so scared of getting relegated as it can more or less destroy a club that they will do all kinds of stupid/rash things in order to try and stay in the top flight, spending money they don't have, going bust, hiring and firing multiple coaches in a season etc.
Maybe Woody will finesse his decision this time: tell a potential GM hire that Woody will only employ him if HE hires Doug Marrone. LOL
Somebody has to be top dog in the football organization. That's one thing that an owner can't do well unless he's a pre-elderly Al Davis. Whatever Woody does he needs to identify the guy who will be the primary in the organization on things like strategy and talent acquisition. That can be the HC with a GM caddying for him on the details or it can be a GM with a HC carrying out his master plan. Somebody has to do that. Somebody has to be the guy. Somebody has to be the Bill Polian or Jimmy Johnson in your organization. The guy who knows what the plan is and can sell it to everybody else even if it has a few kinks at the start. Jimmy Johnson went 1-15 in his first year in an NFL job but nobody called him out on it because it was clear he had a plan. In the middle of that disaster he traded the franchise's only star player for a ton of draft picks and then won only 1 more game for the rest of the season.
Yup, you are right. I just do not know if Marrone has the cred to warrant that responsibility. I do want an offense next year.
Consistently inconsistent. The Jets have mastered the art of setting high expectations for what amounts to a disappointing, meandering season, punctuated by a player rally at season's end to show support of their coach, gaining strong momentum into the offseason.
I watched the entire press conference and came away thinking that the man seemed as lucid and cogent as any owner I've seen. But, to be fair, I live near Washington, DC and have the Dan Snyder to watch and listen to. I thought Woody said enough but not too much. I'm not sure what Boomer thought he should say...and, really, Boomer has morphed into some crazed Radio Talk caricature. And, lest we forget, remember that 24-6 lead which he couldn't close the deal on. He's garbage.
