The Head Coach is not actually in the Front Office. and, we don't, nor does the record actually reflect, that Herm sucked. Do you actually know anything about football or just about hating Herm Edwards?
Mangini. Rex got to the 2 games with the players that Mangini drafted. Tannenbaum drafted who his coaches wanted and Mangini did the better job and was fired too soon
if only we could take a little from all those coaches, minus belichek since he wasn't our hc for any game. groh's - tenacity. Edwards - nfl playing resume. mangini - x's and o's smarts. rex - personality/ loyalty
Rex Ryan is the best coach the Jets have had since Weeb Ewbank. He gave us 4 road playoff wins and had us knocking on the door of two Super Bowls. He gave us 2.75 seasons where we were Super Bowl contenders, and that's good enough for second place overall. You can make a strong, or even a winning argument for Parcells, and I'd consider that an acceptable answer as well. Belichick shouldn't count because he resigned in his first press conference.
Groh had some hard practices. Some of the veterans including Mawae and Cherbet were openly critical of Groh. When we missed the playoffs by the skin of our teeth there was speculation that Groh would be fired, especially since we lost our last three games in a row. Some believed that the team either wore down from too much practice. While Groh described head coach of Virginia as his dream job he may have been saying that because he was about to get fired.
I might actually argue that Rex played a big part in our 2 AFCC games. His defenses imploded for a whole half in each one. Awful preparation. To his credit, two brilliant game plans in 2010. Indy and NE. Too bad he went belly up in Pitt. But he has had 4 seasons of mediocrity or worse. I hold my sides laughing when people say with conviction that there is no one better out there. How can anyone say that Dan Quinn or Todd Bowles will not be better than Rex? How can they know? What we do know is that Rex cannot run the marathon. He is all start and no finish.
I liked Al Groh , 9-7...I loved the game plan he and Charlie Weiss came up with vs the Ravens, when he threw on every play and was pretty much the only team that piled up any yardage on that great defense that year. Ray Lewis bellyached after the game, what kind of football is that they threw on every play.
Al Groh didn't get the shaft -- He left to go coach his Alma Mater Virginia -- it was his dream job, much the same way why Harbaugh is going to Michigan except for the mutual decision to leave part. I remember vaguely the friction JH mentions but I don't think he was getting fired that season. But it may have woke him up to the reality of how it could happen in the NFL. I still think it is more that your dream job may only open once in a window where you are able to grab it. I didn't vote for Groh because he was HC for the one season, but he was actually probably the best HC on the list (cept BB). The funny thing about this thread it just goes to show the blind Rex love fest. Mangini, Herm and Rex all have very similar resumes. The results basically dictate that really none of the three stand head and shoulders above the rest. Which in theory means the votes should be fairly split among the three no so heavily for Rex.
Inconsistencies mostly based on Pennington's health. I'm actually surprised he isn't second on this poll

on defense, rex. on offense, nobody! imo, woody should also consult with westoff and lucas, just to get two outside opinions. too bad he won't consider westoff as a hc candidate. he probably wants to go with much younger guy.
surprised walt michaels doesnt get much love here....if u put all factors together (experience, player trust), he is certainly up there, IMO. realize he was much earlier than parcells but some folks are bringing up the old coaches
yep that was a major clusterfuk in florida. WM did a few funky things himself as well - occasionally calling out players, media, and others - usually when deserved - but it still rubbed them the wrong way. this combined with his more than occasional booze use did him in with the NFL. but he apparently was very good with the younger players and took no shit from anyone.
When I think of the Mud Bowl, I get a stomach ache...Mike Adamle working the game for NBC walked out on the field before the game and the water on the field was over his ankles, what a disgrace that only shithead Shula could get away with...
