He tried to proactively defend the indefensible instead of just taking the questions, acknowledging the short-comings and moving forward. That's what was needed in that situation. If he'd done that the press would have looked worse than he did with the badgering and the spin coming out of the press conference would have been "decent man, maybe outmatched but he stood up to it and is still going." Idzik btw is a very decent man. He was treated really poorly by the press who saw an opportunity to take somebody Jets-related down and took it. Shame on them.
Woody needs to stand back, hire some good people who are all on the same page and give them time and support to do their work. And by "support," I mean making little footballs out of looseleaf paper and flicking them through the uprights of his penny loafers.
The press tried to make Idzik look like an incompetent control freak. To me he met a wave of resistance. A tidal wave. But he was way over his head in terms of dealing with the media and the public relations aspect of the job. So he'll go back to being a 2nd or 3rd banana with none of those responsibilities.
Did anyone bother to ask Woody at the press conference why he's not going to hire a general manager first and let him pick the coach? Did anyone bother to ask Woody why he's going to force a coach onto his new general manager when it was clear that didn't work out the last time? I really don't understand why we have to rush into hiring a head coach. The most important thing right now is finding the best person to evaluate talent, and that includes coaches.
