I don't have the stats but I think that there are a lot more starting OLs from rounds 3 and up than the first two rounds. But I'd have no problem using our first two picks on O-linemen. Or maybe a trade down and get more guys.
this was what Woody Johnson said back in October. “I think we’re close,” he said. “I think we’re a lot closer than people think.” He has followed the organizational tone, but offered, “We want to build a team that has sustainability and [will] be successful over the long period.” “I think like anything, we're trying to make the best decisions we can for the long-term sustainability and the successful sustainability of the New York Jets,” Johnson said on Thursday. “We have players we want to sign and we're looking at the value of players in free agency and we're looking at everything we can. I said earlier this season that we're trying to build through the draft. We'll do an occasional free agent but the free agent market is not a panacea. We're trying to make wise decisions to build a team through the draft and try to build a sustainable team.” Compare that to what he said in his presser after firing Idzik. It's pretty much night and day. Woody seemed to have been on board with Idzik's plan until the fan and media backlash forced his hand. Now I ask again if you are a legit candidate or a man with "strong character" why would you take this job, with Woody's history of flakiness and cowering under media pressure? These are legit concerns for any potential candidate not speculation at all.
He may yet learn from this experience. and, for sure, if he's told it's a "five-year rebuilding project" he'll know he needs to be showing clear progress in Year Two of it. You cannot say what concerns another person has, unless they tell you. No matter how lovely your paragraph structure is; how prudently you bold text; how you artfully italicize, it's still what you think a person would be concerned with and is speculation. That hasn't changed, though perhaps Woody Johnson's statements may have. All of the candidates know more than we do about the Jets situation. They are insiders and, of course, Grown @ss Men. Either they want the job or they don't. But you really should look into what is fact and what is your opinion. The facts are what Woody has said. The speculation is what you think people should legitimately be concerned with.
There's no such thing as a "five-year rebuilding project" in the NFL. It's a win now league and NY is a win yesterday town. Idzik could have survived 4-12 if it also meant: Geno Smith was showing signs of being our future franchise QB, Jalen Saunders, Shaq Evans and/or Quincy Enunwa were putting up OBJ type numbers, Calvin Pryor looking like a NFL FS instead of yet ANOTHER in the box SS, one of the 4 OGs he drafted played well enough to supplant Willie "The Penalty" Colon…etc…etc. Unfortunately for Idzik none of that accompanied that record.
I can't say what will or won't concern individual A as opposed to individual B. My point is that if anybody has any drawbacks about the job these are the issues that would conrrn them. If a candidate with more options are available imo I can't see them taking this job.
It's either Jets or Bears. One has a QB with a god awful contract to deal with. One doesn't and just has fans/media who just need wins to shut them up.
Again, you seem to state speculations as fact. You don't know if anyone would have these concerns. or to what extent they would have them. Simply put, these are YOUR concerns. ALL position vacancies have issues associated with them, otherwise they wouldn't be open. the issues you've mentioned seem ill-conceived and slanted toward denigrating the treatment Idzik received. And I doubt any of the prospective candidates will a rat's ass about them. But that is simply me speculating.
Nope these aren't speculations these are real issues. Not my fault tgat you don't like it. If anybody takes the job it's because it's their one real chance to become a GM, they're going into it knowing the risks. I don't give a fuck about the issues of other teams. I'm stating the issues with taking the Jets GM job. Even if a potential GM candidate didn't agree with Idzik's moves, it's the simple fact that he was fired 2 years in when its common knowledge and for the most part an accepted practice that GM's get more than 2 years to implement his plan. That's an issue. So if a prospect takes the job that's an issue he knows he's walking into, he knows if things go south quickly he could lose his job quickly.
Some GM candidates won't take jobs if they can't make the decisions. Not just with the Jets but other orgs. and owners. We heard this two years ago and now. Of course you could sweeten things up with a lot more salary. Money still talks.
I actually think it is the other way around. Remember a couple of years ago all 5 of our OL were first rounders. Pass Rushers and O Lineman are almost always the 2 top in number drafted in the first. There are usually only a couple of QBs, WR, RB drafted in round 1. DL, LB, OL, DB often have 5,6 or 7 of them. By the time of the draft there very well could be 3 OL drafted in the top 10 picks. Hope the Jets are smart enough to be one of them.
Not to mention his shitty handling of the team led to the demise of Rex Ryans tenure here. When you look at the candidates we are interviewing it made zero sense to let Rex go to hire one of these guys
Yeah this is true. But of all OL starting in the NFL how many are low round picks? Guard, centers and tackles. I think a lot of 5th and 6th rounders. Maybe the majority.
Agreed. At least release a full paragraph or two, and talk about how you tried to do what you thought was best for the Jets and you're sorry that you came up short. This felt like the absolute minimum, and I get that "sour grapes" feeling from it, like he might be bitter and angry about it.
We had 12 fucking drafts picks. How many still here? Why did we keep so many late round picks. 20 million dollars. A coach players come to play for. How do we not end up with any quality? All on the GM, directly responsible for the crap team we fielded. Rex and his timeouts fiascos. Rex and constant penalties. Rex and no offense or hiring an offensive coordinator. Rex and the bye week, movie night smacks Dave and busters, missing meetings, mike Vick admitting he didn't prepare. Rex insisting on ground and pound when 4 QBs had seasons of 5000+ yds. Our patented 3rd down D that could never get that one crucial stop when needed. Both were right to be let go. Both bear responsibility for this mess. You can say rebuild all you want but if your plan sucks your still left with nothing.
