That's certainly a valid point. I guess nobody could answer that except Jameis. He was cleared of any wrongdoing by the school (not that that means much in my opinion.).

Could be that too - if the only reason people don't want him on the Jets is because he said some immature shit, then well we are going to miss out big time.

I'm not a huge Winston guy, I don't think he's a can't miss prospect, but the film don't lie if the Jets like what they see, and he's available they should take him.

Raping someone is hardly "some immature shit..." at least in my mind.

It'll never be better than 50/50. Mariota and Winston are Luck and RG3 and neither is anywhere near Luck.

There's no proof that this actually occurred, it's no different than Big Ben - Jets will do their research and find out the true story more than likely.

we prob won't see a Luck like player for another 5-10 yrs.

Good heavens, the Big Ben situation is the worst kept secret in football. I'm not all that prissy when it comes to character. I supported Michael Vick, after all. but rape is beyond where I can root for someone.

Despite my numerous posts, I really wouldn't care if the Jets never won anything if they had to put a rapist under center. And that includes Ben Roethlisberger.

The bigger trap would be is to take a questionable QB with a #1 and have that set the franchise back another 4-5 years.

Let me be clear, I don't think Geno is an NFL caliber starter AT THIS POINT in his very brief career. He does show flashes, but he's still too inconsistent - and that has always been the case with young QB's - this is no mystery. Put players around him to support him, that is all.

What other options are out there for an immediate fix? Jay Cutler (for the price of a low round pick) is the only other QB I would take a gamble on for an immediate impact. Not many options for 2015.

Yes, if bad/average QBs are surrounded by a great supporting cast and coaches like Matt Cassell/Sanchez/Alex Smith, they can become competent and maybe even be good in a game or two. Surround them with bad coaches/players and they become awful.

On the flipside combine a good QB with bad coaches/players and they're still pretty good. Combine them with great coaches/supporting cast and they become special.

I still think good coaching and player development is necessary for a Super Bowl win, which makes it just as important if not more important. Joe Flacco is not a good enough quarterback to win a Super Bowl. Yet he did. You can certainly say the same with the Ravens' other super bowl win.

Russel Wilson is a good Qb but he wouldn't be anything special without Pete Carroll or the Seahawks organization; yet he won a Super Bowl early, too.

Of course Peyton Manning on the Colts won a Super Bowl despite the organization, not because of it. I guess it just depends on one's perspective, though, because it's hard to separate a Qbs performance from his innate ability vs. pieces around him/coaching/development.

Re Winston: To just say "he wasn't convicted" or "there's no proof" or "they will research and find out the truth"-- I think it is pretty obvious what happened. Read this article and tell me it won't be hard to root for this guy:

    http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/...egations-against-fsu-jameis-winston.html?_r=0

I realize he was a kid, amped up on hormones and probably booze, and felt entitled given his budding celebrity. I also would hope he can mature, and look back on that night with extreme regret.

Take this with a grain of salt, but this article heavily criticizes the New York Times reporting of the Winston case, saying that it left out key evidence and opted to be sensationalist rather than cover the whole truth. Whether or not this article holds any substance, I just don't know. But you should read it if you base your entire opinion of Winston on the NYTimes piece.

It's also definitely worth reading the 15-page investigation report done by Jason Newlin, an investigator for the State Attorneys Office who really has no reason to be biased (though maybe he is.) Ultimately he also concluded there was not enough evidence of misconduct to take any further action.

    A LARGE grain of salt:

The New York Times published an exhaustive review of the Jameis Winston rape investigation Wednesday, one that provides a handful of new details about the case and casts new doubts on both Tallahassee police's and Florida State's responses to the accusation against Winston.
Per the report, the university was aware of the complaint against Winston as early as January 2013, when a police email obtained by the Times shows that an officer “received a call from the Athletic Directors Assistant inquiring about the case.”
According to federal Title IX guidelines, any athletic department official who is aware of a sexual assault allegation is required to pass that knowledge to administrators, and any school aware of such an allegation is required to perform its own investigation. (The same principle has been at issue in Missouri's handling of the Sasha Menu Courey case.)
Florida State did not provide comment to the Times on when administrators became aware of the accusation against Winston. School officials did not speak to Winston concerning the allegations until January 2014, following the Seminoles' BCS championship season.

Options in 2015 are very limited. I think it's best to get a stop-gap for the yr, but it will be tough to pass on Winston if the Jets like what they saw in the film room. 2016 could be the yr of the QB again.

Frankly the whole thing stinks. Yes its he said/she said, but I really hope the Jets don't pick this guy.

Move on, look for a high character QB they can groom. I'm not looking for a saint, just someone that my 10 year old Jets fan son can wear his jersey and root on the team without me being ashamed.

If the guy wins with us, you'll happily buy a jersey, or one of the guys he's throwing to. Aren't we trying to win? Not all high character guys make it in the NFL. Draft is a crap-shoot.

Believe me in a perfect world, I wouldn't take Winston also. However, he could be the key to something great if no trouble off-the field. We talk about taking a chance - Jets might have to take a leap of faith.

No I wont. My son will keep rocking his Curtis Martin jersey. And my bet is the guy will be a bust anyway. Listen to him in interviews, he makes Geno sound like a PhD. You need to have a mind to be a successful NFL quarterback. All the good ones (Rogers, Brady, Manning, Luck, Wilson) are very bright.

I'm not firmly entrenched in any QB camp right now (except maybe Dak Prescott). I suggest you read that article, Winston's not as dumb as he comes off.
