Good to lock him down for next year. Richardson too as he was pretty good in pre-season. http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/art...994c0-9a50-458b-9a43-611ecda6ac08?campaign=tw The New York Jets have renegotiated QB Matt Simms' contract and have signed eight other players to reserve/future deals. By renegotiating his contract, Simms will not become an exclusive-rights free agent in 2015. He will be beginning his fourth offseason with the Jets. Last year he was Geno Smith's season-long backup and this year he backed up Smith and Michael Vick, seeing action for one fourth-quarter series in Game 9 at Kansas City.
Probably. Bradway has experience as the Jets' GM, and he wasn't fired, so right now he is probably the de facto interim GM until they hire a new one in the next few days or whatever. These are all deals with guys at the bottom of the roster, probably for minimum salary. Probably without bonuses or guarantees; or at least not significant ones. From the Jets' perspective, they're looking to keep the rights to these players in case the new HC likes them. And from the players' perspective, they want to be on a roster for training camp and are happy to sign now. Ultimately these contracts don't mean much, because the Jets can still cut them before the season at no cost. If the new HC doesn't like certain guys, they can be dumped immediately. Because it's such a low-risk move, there was no harm in letting Bradway do those deals, but yeah I would guess that Bradway would be holding the fort down until they get a new GM (who may very well fire Bradway, or push him into a marginalized role.)
I'm just glad other teams didnt snap up Simms and Richardson. I'd like to see how these guys develop with the Jets.
The Jets obviously love Simms for whatever reason, which makes it curious to me why Woody didn't make Rex put the kid in a few games last season to see what he's got?
I think Woody Johnson felt more comfortable with a numbers and business kind of guy like Tannenbaum, but he wanted to keep Bradway around because he's a personnel guy who Johnson trusted. When you're hiring Tannenbaum, who was just a cap space and negotiations expert, maybe he felt like it was important to retain someone with a personnel background who he had a good rapport with, who he felt would be a straight-shooter and preserve continuity. If it was just Tanny, and you cleaned out all the old personnel guys... how does a cap expert know what to look for in a scout? He'd be flying blind to some extent and not know what to look for. Bradway has a personnel background and he'd know what to look for in a scout, at least more than a cap guy would. Then Tanny was fired. Although Idzik did have some scouting background (he had coached and scouted at a low level and spent a lot of time watching film and trying to learn personnel evaluation) he was not a long-term, full-time talent evaluator. So he was not really a personnel guy, not like someone who spent years and years focusing only or mainly on that. So again, it comes down to... would you trust Idzik, basically a cap guy, to pick all the personnel guys? Or do you want to keep an experienced personnel guy who has been with the team for over 10 years, and let him advise the cap guy? That's the option that the Jets went with, and I think that Woody also liked having him around because they had a good working relationship. Now that we're switching to a personnel expert GM, Bradway may or may not be desired by the new GM. He might think it's good to have someone who was there when 100% of the current roster was drafted / signed through free agency, someone who knows the thought process behind every one of those moves. On the other hand, he might feel like he was a part of why the roster has not developed sufficiently and/or he might prefer to bring in only his people. Either way, Terry Bradway will probably keep his job through the end of the 2015 Draft. Even if the new GM doesn't like him, the 2015 draft's work has been mostly completed already, and you can't just fire all the scouts who watched those players. The college season is over. So the Idzik scouts, and really most of the entire front office, has to be kept until the end of the draft. At that point, they will fire more of the front office and start replacing it with people the new GM wants. Whether Bradway will make the cut or not, I don't know. It's also important to recognize that we don't really know much about the internal dynamics of the Jets' front office. We don't know if Bradway has been giving good advice that has been ignored, or bad advice that's been followed. We don't really know if he was part of the problem or if he can be part of the solution, and we have to trust whoever the new GM is to figure that out and to decide on the best team to run the front office moving forward.
So according to the team website Rod Graves will oversee operations in the interim. Glad it's not Terry Dumbway.
Rod Graves, actually. http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/20...ions_until_jets_land_new_general_manager.html
The level of catastrophe required next year for Simms to start is mind numbing. We would have to lose Geno AND the rookie we draft /FA we sign to injury. Even then we would probably beg Kyle Orton to come out of retirement first.
Update: Rod Graves is the interim GM. http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/art...im-Basis/84aeebea-3807-4df3-98b1-f86ac733c7c5
