To be fair, Tanny created all those bloated, back-loaded contracts in the first place...which is why he got fired. His worst offense (no pun intended): extending Sanchez's contract in 2011 (after a poor year) so he wouldn't feel bad about us pursuing Peyton Manning. How much money were we giving Sanchez? "The deal includes $20.5 million in guarantees for 2012 and 2013 and $40.5 million in "new" money, bringing his total over five years to $58.25 million...The $58.25 million gives Sanchez the seventh-highest financial package among NFL quarterbacks" Can you defend that move?
Yea - you missed the roster and cap situation Tanny left us? He played for broke and went broke. It was at least a 2 year project to get back to a reasonable spot. If we're truly only a good offseason away, which I don't know if I agree with, wouldn't it be cool if we had planned to have a boat load of cap space to accomplish the good offseason? The rest of your post was strawman horse cock and omitted as such.
No I can't defend that move nor is it relevant to what I wrote unless your argument is that the contract is what "drove the franchise to the ground"? When Tanny was fired I thought it was the right move. I'm not here saying Tanny was a great GM just questioning the notion he drove this franchise to the ground. I think that's a bit of an overstatement.
The 2 worst Tannenbaum contracts were the insane extension he gave to Mark after another horrendous season and of course Holmes, and if you think that Idzik ignored skill positions look at the receivers list for 2012.
Tanny is the reason there was a phrase going around here "cap hell". Tanny is the reason we weren't able to resign Revis; that or the front loaded contract Tanny gave to Holmes. Tanny had the worst off season 2011 that any GM could possibly hatch together
Tanny's shining moment was allowing the Jets to compete in 2009 and 2010. But his contracts (including and especially Sanchez's) did drive this franchise into the ground. Idzik had to spend his entire first year fixing Tanny's cap mistakes...only now can we finally begin to truly recover from Tanny's financial decisions. It might be an exaggeration but it's not a huge one. Tanny hurt this team's long-term success in order to "win now." Great in 2010; terrible from 2011-2013.
He went for broke and fell short. So what at least he tried. Not sure why everyone is so upset about that? It's not your money. As it were once we were able to rid ourselves of those bad contracts we freed up a ton of space and in position to start over. Tanny IMO deserved to go because he began drafting poorly after starting out pretty good in that area. I could care less about how much of Woody's money he spent.
I don't give a shit about how much money he spent I give a shit about the shitty contracts that left us in a bad cap situation where we had to cut a bunch of players we needed with no one to replace them because he always traded away half of our draft picks. He left us in a hole that required at least a couple seasons to dig out of. Not just financial in terms of cap but the complete lack of depth that needed to be back filled. Remember Westhoff couldn't even do anything with the shit he was left with on special teams?
I was thinking about that one, too. But maybe that one was also on the coaching staff. Remember the O-line coach guaranteeing that Hunter would be a good player. He might have signed him based on their recommendation. He did get rid of Hunter but took on an equally bad contract but the guy he got was slightly better than Hunter.
That quote I believe was after the extension. Kind of like a hostage video situation, what is he going to say?
People make such a big deal about "cap hell" as if we were the first team to ever be in that situation and/or it so difficult to get out of. All it took for us was one off-season purge. Once you are in position to cut your way out of "cap hell", ideally you hope to have young players which you drafted step in replenish what you've lost. Cap hell or cap flexibility really amounts to nothing when you draft poorly. A team can survive "cap hell" if they continue to draft well but nothing drives a team to the ground faster and longer than continually f*cking up the draft. Neither Idzik or Tanny near the end drafted well; they had in common and that's why both are out of a job. Idzik apologists can continue to attack Tanny to ease their butt soreness but the fact is Tanny managed to last 3 times as long as Idzik, compile 4 playoff wins, 2 AFCCGs and his name was not on any billboards, flyers and towels with "fire" preceding it.
Look, I'm sure that Tanny consulted with the coaching staff before re-signing Hunter. After the season the coaching staff grades every player and probably they gave him a good grade. Tanny probably never really asserted himself when it came to personnel decisions. He listened to the coaching staff, both Eric and Rex.
True, our coaches have been pretty shitty about properly evaluating the talent they had on the roster.
Get a hold of yourself, man! You're talking about Mike Tannenbaum and Wayne Hunter for God's sake. They're gone! They've been gone and they're not coming back!
Here's the thing. I don't thing anyone really endorses Idzik as a good GM, but I think most who stick up for him believe he just got a raw deal and simply didn't get enough time. I know that's where I stand. You acknowledge Tanny left the cap situation in a 1 year fix but have yet to acknowledge the complete lack of depth and talent he left the roster with. That's something that was going to take years (not 1 year) to back fill. So Idzik didn't dig out of the hole Tanny left in 2 years. I don't think anyone could have. The guy never even had a chance to show whether he was building something the right way. 2 years is just a silly length of time to give a GM. I won't be surprised at all if potential GM's are irked by that. Luckily they have a much better situation to walk into than Idzik did so hopefully that is more important.
The complete lack of depth was acknowledge when I said he drafted poorly near the end and we did not have young players who could replenish what we lost. While Tanny's preference of quality over quantity created a very thin roster, 20 Idzik picks later, our depth is not that much better. It wasn't Tanny that made Idzik squander the majority of those picks. Idzik was fired because of the hole(s) he dug not the one Tanny left him.
Getting out of a bad cap situation in only two years is pretty darn good. Not jumping all over that money and spending it as soon as it's in your pocket-is very smart.
You are the fucking KING of Idzik Faint Praise. Two years is pretty much "industry standard" for getting out of salary cap purgatory. And the method is pretty straight forward: eat some dead money, restructure, and cut some expensive contracts and starve the beast for a couple of years. It aint rocket science when you have a "long-range plan". What next will praise Idzik for? oh right, you already said it--NOT spending any money on players. And, I gotta say, you've not expressed ANY praise for my comedic stylings. They seem completely wasted on you...
final call on Idzik was he was too strict in his ways, was gun shy, and not fast enough for the NFL level....and he was way too cheap to get anything done. when you have your owner in a press conference basically say, yeah I don't know why he left 20 mil sitting around, then you've got yourself a problem as a GM.
