I really like Sumlin as well. I would LOVE it if we hired him. The only one that we have requested an interview for that I like is Quinn (and maybe Reich as well).
I get what you are saying I was just saying that to not to rule him out based on his previous experience. Cleveland became a tough situation for Belichick by the way when they announced they were moving but that was in his 5th year at the helm. They had lots and lots of talent when he was there and were often trendy SB picks that fell way short. People seem to forget that for some reason and point to the tough situation despite it not really being that way until the end. With Kubiak, he was on a team that had never ever been to the playoffs before. That's a tough situation. And you shouldn't cite Foster unless you are giving Kubiak credit because his offense/system/development made the undrafted Foster who he is. That's a testament to Kubiak's success, not an indictment on his lack thereof.
I actually think I like Kubiak more than anyone. Let's be real here...he got more out of Matt Schaub than anyone else has ever been close to getting, and exactly what the previous poster said, Foster might not be who he is without Kubiak.
Some very good points and clarification. I'm definitely not ruling him out based on his Houston years. However I just don't see him as being anything more than an average HC, which isn't always a bad thing. However, I would rather the Jets strive to be more than the current Bengals. A team that can never go deep in the playoffs. I just see Kubiak as being in that same mold. There's obviously not many dynamic, top HC's out there. Yet there are some really innovative, proven HC's at the college level who I really hope the Jets at least look into such as Sumlin, Shaw and Malzahn.
I would like them to at least think outside the box and try to be innovative as well. It would be awesome if they interviewed one of the candidates you mention.
Eric DeCosta is the guy, it will be hard to pry him away from Baltimore though. Turned us down in 2013 and already gets paid top GM money for being an assistant. Much better scenario for incoming GM's here this time around: - top 6 pick - tons of cap - won't have Rex forced on you. Also, like Eliot Wolf we should interview him soon since GB is on a playoff bye.
We will be interviewing internal candidate Rod Graves. He has only been here one year, so I'm okay with this. He has ties to Arizona.

I don't think Rod Graves is necessarily being used for the Rooney Rule. He did a good job for the Cardinals in terms of drafting for them.
Why is DeCosta a pipe dream. He's an unproven commodity. I'll take Ozzie Newsome as my pipedream. DeCosta is ok but no pipe dream.
Exactly why it's a dumb rule. Makes no sense to get guys hopes up when they have no chance at the job. We are interviewing Lynn for the head coach job and it just doesn't make sense why. 2 of the top college coaching candidates are Sumlin and Shaw. It's not like it used to be.
A lot of times it's dumb, yes, just a step in the process, but all interviews raise a candidates stature in the league and it can get teams to think outside the box. As for the candidates, sometimes all you really need is an interview. Suppose Lynn came up with an amazing plan for the Jets and blew Johnson/his brass/the New GM away in the interview than the Jets would have a coach they otherwise would've never thought of interviewing. I think that's happened more than we realize because, lets be honest, there simply wouldn't be the amount of minority coaches/GMs we've seen without it. So it's been successful and good for the league. Hard to knock it. All it is, is an interview requirement, not a quota or a requirement to hire. I'm all for interviewing as many people as possible so why find fault?

He's a target for every team. He's been turning down interviews because he's in line to replace Ozzie in Baltimore. We asked him two years ago and he said fuck off. HIGHLY unlikely he leaves his established home for our shit show.
If Woody really wants DeCosta you give him complete control over football operations and you overpay him. Then he might be interested.
