I liked Rex but no GM is coming here saddled with Rex again. 4 wins and four straight seasons out of the playoffs? No one keeps their job.
John Idzik's statement. “I would like to thank Woody Johnson for the opportunity to work with so many fine individuals in the Jets organization and I wish them well going forward.”
What else was there to say? Nobody ever says anything at these times. I like how Woody 'hinted' at the lack of game management from Ryan. He hardly actually mentioned Idzik at all really.
Stop the crap about Jet fans not being patient for rebuilding. We've been rebuilding for 45 years. Jet fans don't mind rebuilding, but we want to see some positives in the process. After 6 years of Ryan and 2 years of Idzik list for me right now the young dynamic offensive players we have to build around. If you are having trouble coming up with names, then you have hit on the reason many Jet fans rightly wanted the two of them gone.
With the short-term nature of guaranteed money and the draft, the NFL is NOT a rebuilding league. The talent level is virtually identical between the majority of teams. The difference between meh and great is usually coaching, confidence, and that "special player". That's why Parcells could take a 1-whatever team and turn it into a 9-7 and then 12-4 team in two years.
Its a bad joke amongst old time fans to reflect the general ineptitude of the franchise over the last half century and you're right we should probably drop it but sometimes it comes up in conversation due to force of habit.
If thats the case, and I agree to a certain extent, thats even more of an indictment of Ryan and Idzik.
I'm very optimistic!! I like how Woody saw a problem and addressed it, even if it went against what "everyone" says. Rex's spiel was tired. His schemes, played out. And the other guy...NOT a complement to winning. So Woody hires some experts and has a very deep pool of qualified candidates and some draft and free agent capital. What's not to like?
I don't think Woody really said anything. No true specifics. Just that a 4-12 is unacceptable. The problem is his involvement. He hired Casserly and Wolf to deflect criticism plus other teams are doing the exact same thing. But the bottom line is: he's still making the calls. And good GM candidates will shy off from this because they know their careers (like Idzik) can be ruined. Woody won't even say that the horse (the GM) comes before the cart (the coach). He might hire the new coach himself and then the GM. In other words same situation as two years ago. Really stupid.
I think it's fair to blame Rex for this team's failed years and still want him back given the landscape of who's currently available. That's where I'm at.
Wow, I think you're letting your love affair with Idzik cloud your judgment. I think potential candidates will see the same thing everyone but Idzik's strongest supporters saw: someone who bungled his second offseason so poorly that the guy who hired him HAD to fire him. Idzik ruined his own career. And NFL owners are NFL owners: that's not going to change. If/When Dan Snyder fires someone there will still be a line of people eager to work for him.
But what if the new GM does everything "right" yet things go left and team goes 4-12/6-10 who's to say the fan and media pressure won't force Woody to fire that guy? That's what most gm's have in the back of their minds.
id have kept idzik then and figured it out this yr with a mountain of cap space great coaches like rex ryan dont grow on trees
Hey look I'm all for getting a good new GM and coach. But not to make the same mistakes as in the past. Woody even admitted pairing his new Gm with an incumbent coach wasn't smart. So hire the GM first and then the coach. And get someone the new GM wants to work with. Idzik is gone. He to me gets an Incomplete not the F bomb you want to give him.
I'm still can't believe we kept all 12 picks. Going into the draft I would have bet my life savings that we wouldn't.
