I don't want Gruden, I don't want Bill Cowher, I don't want the ghost of Weeb Eubank/Vince Lombardi/Tom Landry. The fact is: The game has CHANGED and what used to work does not always work anymore. Look at Joe Gibbs, Mike Holmgren, etc. The game clearly passed them by. Would you rather have Cowher than Chip Kelly in 2015? Maybe in 1998 the former was a better hire. We need to hire the GM first, the GM comes from a certain football line (coaches/scouts/etc) and let the GM pick his staff (people he knows/shares philosophy with). I would like a young and up and coming coach to come in and take his first HC job by the reigns with an exciting new GM who is going to put a plan into place. I don't want some re-tread head coach who was a great coach in 1995.
This. I had heard that we were trying for Harbaugh in unison with our GM search. Harbaugh's good enough that you have to reach out to him immediately. Now everyone knows he's going to Michigan so its likely we will get a GM first and then he will pick the HC.
Wow, do I get the feeling we are going to bathe in mediocrity for the forseeable future. The options out there this year are just overwhelming!!! (SARCASM)
All I'm saying is that young first time coach and exciting GM has been done before and it didn't work here. Nobody was more exciting than Tannenbaum in the 7 years he was Jets GM. Trades, free agent signings, draft day trades, he did it all and when the dust cleared the team was never good enough to go all the way.
He did everything but find a QB. on top of not finding a QB, he foolishly extended a QB, while bringing in the wrong QB (Tebow) for 'competition'. essentially, his entire mishandling of the QB position is what did him in, and not the wheelin and dealin. i agree tho that some more NFL experience is what i'm looking for in a GM now. doesn't necessarily have to previously been a GM, but some years as assistant GM/VP of player personnel would be nice. emphasis on talent evaluation.
Woody said yesterday he wants to ensure that our new GM and HC will be able to be working together, I also can understand they will be interviewing GM and HC candidates with Wolf and Casserly, but Woody will make the final call on new HC, which is strange for me. Be honest, we are only in rush in hiring new HC, because more team is searching new HC as GM. (HC -> 5 teams, GM -> 2 teams (Bears and us).
thats what a lot of people don't realize, the owner gets a lot of say over who the coach is gonna be ,people think its all on the GM it isnt.Arthur Blank the Falcons owner is gonna be hiring there next coach
Actually what Tannenbaum did wrong was to take shortcuts all over the place. That was on top of not finding the QB. You can't win in the NFL with Frankenteam. You can build a big stumbling monster that scares the crap out of everybody but it takes years to build a team.
They came damn close though. Tannenbaum built a team that was good enough to win the SB. That's all you can ask of a GM. I'd rather have a GM like him who was bold and had the ability to attract marquee players and piece it all together than a GM like a John Idzik who was overly conservative and couldn't seal the deal with anyone unless he overpaid. Especially here in NY where marquee talent can be attracted too.
The Jets weren't good enough to win a Super Bowl after Kris Jenkins went down each season. They just weren't. They didn't have control of the line of scrimmage on defense after that. The injury wasn't random either. The key piece in the Jets front 7 was pre-disastered before we made the trade to bring him aboard. Both of the open window seasons were capped when he went down.
I wasn't even thinking about him - - as I think they could've won it without him. But yes that even furthers my point, if not for his unfortunate injury troubles they had a damn stacked team. That was well put together by Tannenbaum.
There was no year in the run from 2008 to 2011 where there weren't huge questions to be answered. There was no year in the range which didn't produce critical holes at key moments. You can't keep throwing things into the mix and hoping they stick. Not when they're only 1 or 2 year solutions and they prevent building a strong team in the process.
it did take Tannebaum years to build the team, and then he pushed to go over the top. If he found a legit QB, it would've sustained. Granted too many draft picks were dealt, giving us less margin for error, and we erred plenty.
Although Tanny had a plan, And I have to say it almost worked but like you have been saying in this thread there was little margin of error. And when we did not make it we went into cap hell and there was no climbing out of it.
God, people act as if "cap hell" is something more than a two-year thing. Of course there's climbing out of it. the problem was lack of draft acumen in his case. Same problem the next guy had. that and no balls to spend a fucking dime.
