There's not much to talk about. He'll stay with the team because of his contract situation. If you get someone good, Geno will be the back up. If you bring in someone not so good or not good yet, Geno starts, we suck and we are in the same place 12 months for now.

He's at least shown that he can be a capable back up who pretty much sucks compared to other starters in the NFL but he's certainly an NFL player, just not a starter in this league.

I always thought Geno could be the guy for us. He has the ability but he hasn't put it all together yet. Hopefully this turns into a Drew Brees situation like in San Diego where we get a good qb and then Geno goes nuts making us choose between 2 good qbs.

He finished on a high note again but it wasn't enough to leave him here as a starting qb for the jets.

Geno is a back up QB. We need a stud QB of we will continue this mediocrity...

He will stay and compete for the starting job and if we have a viable veteran, geno will probably lose the battle.

I don't see any reason to cut him except to make a message about new era or something like that. Football reasons, unless we get a better starter and backup, cheap contract so keep geno around.

Alex Smith was though of in a similar manner until he had a staff actually coached him. There were some blown coverages but Geno made some awesome throws and excellent reads all day. I think with a real HC, and QB coach Geno has a shot to become at a minimum a good QB.

A big imporvment? How many of those turn overs costed games or did effect the out come of games. That is like saying my car broke down 20 times the first year but the next year it broke down 10 times.....I would still be looking for another car.
You see improvement I see less chances for him to make those turn overs. Case in point the first Miami game 13 throws and still throws an interception by making a bad read. He should have went to decker but stayed focused on the tight end.

Sorry but if we stayed with the living turn over it would be 4 more yes before he would improve enough to be considered a starter.

Again Sanchez had better numbers and was ran out of town why are people giving Smith more chances to kill this team.

Mistake sign a QB and Draft start from scratch. Why Would I Want To Start A Guy That Singlehandedly help get a g.m. and entire coaching staff fired

Singlehandedly...Let's see, there was the Patterson signing, the 5 WR whiffs, players calling TOs, not able to get FG attempts past the LoS, offensive line penalties, one of the worst 3rd down defenses, defense that gave up A LOT of points.

There was plenty of blame to go around...

His first year he had 12 TDs and 21 INTs, which is terrible. This year he has 13 TDs and 13 INTs, which is not terrible anymore. As far as his TOs costing us games, since we don't blow other teams out, and every game we are in is a close game, any turnover he makes is going to have a big effect. I know you live in some fantasy world where everything works out perfectly, but meanwhile here, in the real world, considering how raw Geno was coming in, I am seeing definite improvement. Last year he was mostly terrible in the beginning, and really terrible in the middle of the season. This year, on the other hand, he played well enough for us to have a chance to win in most games. Yeah, he made a couple of costly mistakes against NE, but you know what, he had a higher QB rating than Brady in that last game. And even elite QBs struggle against NE defense and Belichick.

The key thing here is that he had no college experience with a pro offense and no time spent as a backup, learning the game. He was essentially just thrust into it once Sanchez went down with an injury. Does anyone remember how clueless and helpless he looked in that first preseason game? I mean no one is confusing him with Andrew Luck these days, but he has come some way since then.

And then the other thing is, just observing the playcalling that we do on offense, I have to wonder how Geno would do with a real NFL offense. The stuff we do is just ridiculous. The endless wildcat plays that ruin Geno's rhythm, the super-predictable running plays that we do just to fill some silly quota for Rex, the way he offense scripts the first 15 plays, the way they gimp Geno if he makes a mistake. I want to see what he can do without all this BS.

The butt fumble probably had more to do with Brandon Moore getting old than Sanchez making a mistake but it made Sanchez and the team look really bad on national TV,

If that play never happened Sanchez would probably still be a Jet today.

I've never seen people so easily swayed by really small sample sizes. Over the course of his NFL career he is the worst starting QB in the league.

He played "well" against two teams with nothing to play for.

Stop discussing Sanchez as if Sanchez is now suddenly a starting QB. In case you missed it, the Eagles season ended today as well, largely b/c despite an incredible offensive system, he's not good enough.

Anyone who legitimately thinks we should keep Geno on this team b/c of a game against a nothing to play for Phins squad should be banned for idiocy. He's HORRENDOUS.

We heard the same trash last year. At the end of the season when neither the Jets nor their opponents had anything to play for, he "showed improvement". He's a fucking god awful QB and a waste of a second rounder who should be cut. Today was essentially a preseason game. WTF is wrong with you people.

Regardless, he's under contract next year, and he's not making much cash. Why not let him compete with a veteran QB and perhaps a drafted QB?

B/c there are other backups you can bring in that aren't associated with the horrible stink of the Geno era? Move on, start fresh. He provides nothing that can't be found elsewhere. Plus, he offers nothing as a backup for a young QB b/c he has no wisdom to impart. He's essentially useless.

Here's a nice stat page, Geno's stat breakdown by game this year:

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/gamelog/_/id/15864/geno-smith

Half the games he's played this year, 7 out of 14, he has had a QB rating of 80 or higher, which is really good:

Oakland, NE, Buffalo, Minnesota, Tennesee, NE, Miami

4 out of 14 games, his rating was between 60 and 80, or average-mediocre:

    Green Bay, Chicago, Detroit, Denver

And 3 games, he just stunk it up:

    Buffalo, Miami, and San Diego

Miami is not even really on him, because the gameplan was just guaranteed to screw him over.

So overall, that's not a bad year for a 2nd year QB in our shitty offense. Keep in mind also, a lot of those early games came with Winters at guard, where Geno was running for his life every play, and some of them were before Harvin and with Decker injured.

Next year will be his 3rd year, I'm not giving up on Geno Smith, yet. He actually improved a bit this season as opposed to his rookie year. It'd be one thing if next year was his 5th/6th year, and he was doing terrible.

Our opponents had nothing to play for? Umm, NE last week was playing for homefield advantage, Buffalo in Geno's 2nd game was playing for the playoffs, Minnesota was trying to develop their young QB and get momentum going, and it's not like Miami is just going to roll over at 8-7. What about other good games Geno had early in the season, against Oakland, NE, Denver, etc?

I don't think he was as terrible as people are making him out to be. The problem was that he didn't progress enough in year 2. He made improvements but he still made bad decisions and costly mistakes. Mistakes that you can live with if he was putting up points. He has talent but I'm not completely sold that he is the guy, but I hope he somehow puts it together.
