The Ravens players wanted Rex as their HC, but Ozzie chose Harbaugh. I'll trust the opinion of an actual GM who went against the wishes of his players.
They gave him a gatorade bath because they probably know he's leaving. I really like Rex Ryan, but we basically went through this last year. We closed the season strong, Idzik gave that speech - and we went 4-12 next year. I wouldn't be furious if we kept him because it's not like this is a good football team, but sometimes it's time to say goodbye.
I feel the same way, but I think giving him a gatorade bath after a terrible season like this is unprofessional. These are a bunch of professionals who didn't perform up to the level they were expected to, so why are they celebrating?
I would like Rex back to but it doesn't look like it will happen, its all but over Rex might be the first coach in history to get a gatorade bath the day before he's fired
I think they gave him a bath because he stinks. I can't believe some people are on here feeling bad that he's leaving. It's like a bunch of circus seals clapping after doing a trick and getting a fish. That clown can't leave fast enough for me.
Yea but we were in almost every game this season ,we were so close to having a winning year if things just went our way a little bit
Almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. But I do agree. Pats x2.. Green Bay.. Miami first time.. One if lions/bears. Every one of those games was winnable
This excuse works when you are 8-8, however "we were in it but still managed to blow 12 games" points to fundamental flaws, such as terrible coaching.
If Rex's players love him so much. Why - because he's funny, irreverent and allows them to play undisciplined football. Don Shula's players hated him. Look at the difference in terms of Ws and Ls.
I agree. And if the team was just a little more talented it might've been another 8-8 season. No reason it couldn't have been. But the players , QB specifically , should probably not wait until the coaches job is on the line to actually show up. Either way I take little stock in Geno's performance today. Fins had zip to play for and it showed. Jets were more concerned about going out on a win and making the job less attractive to a GM.
It's like Steve Shutt said about Scotty Bowman coaching the 70's Canadiens dynasty in the NHL - "You hated him 364 days, and on the 365th day you got your Stanley Cup ring." Not every coach has to be a humorless dick like Belichick or Coughlin, but your coach shouldn't be your best friend.
Know why the Jets won today? For the first time in 6 years, when Ryan had nothing to play for, not even his job, the Jets ran an actual modern NFL offense, taking the shackles off Smith and throwing the ball down field. Where has this been? It took six years for Ryan to figure out that a passing offense is a good thing? That is why he will be fired. Because for six seasons the Jets offense resembled the 1934 Chicago Bears. The past two seasons have been painful to watch until today. Who were the stars today? Decker and Smith. The "lack of personnel" did not hurt the Jets today. The CB s did not hurt the Jets. The Jets won in a very Un-Ryan way, by passing for almost 400 yards. That is why Ryan needs to go. He doesn't understand offense in today's NFL. It took a meaningless game for him to let the offense play offense. Bye Rex.
They love him because he never holds them accountable. He'll throw himself under the bus 5,000 times before calling any player out.
The team was still undisciplined. Bad penalties. Giving up big plays on obvious passing downs. But there is talent here. They played up to it today. But not all season.
http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/story/_/id/12087029/new-york-jets-likely-fire-gm-john-idzik I have to quote this fan's comments on Rex, they are right on the money - "Rex should not be fired. His downfall is not the result of his coaching but the result of running a team deficient in talent. It's like running a team where your rooks, bishops and knights all move like pawns. Rex overachieved with what he had to play with last year going 8-8 and this year jets should have been blown out in many games they were close in. All eyes should be on idzik. Idzik is either a bad talent evaluator or he had purposely sabotaged this season so he could replace Rex with his boy Quinn up in Seattle. Either way idzik should be shown the door... " ~Joel Thomas, NYU
I am not sure what grade I would give Rex Ryan at this point. Even if it is somehow not his fault that we lost twelve games this year, even if he is somehow an above average NFL head coach we can do better. The image below should sum it up for the "keep Rex crowd".
