Well we hired him to fix our cap situation and he did just that. He just failed at the other stuff. Now that we have lots of money and few loaded contracts, it might be time to find a GM with better personnel experience. I just hope we don't revert back to a Tanny-esque overspender and backloader.
The crazy thing is, I feel like the Jets are in a much better place now than we were after the 2012 season. That season we went 6-10 after going 8-8. This season we will win fewer games but the future of our team is brighter in my opinion. Rather than having just $4,958,545 in cap space, we will have 10 times that amount, certainly over $40 million and potentially up to $50 million depending on cuts. Our GM won't have to spend his first year cutting solid player after solid player to clear room for the future; he can enact his vision how he wants to and hire the coaching staff that he wants. Plus a top 5 pick helps. At the very least, Idzik put his successor in a pretty good position to succeed, and potentially pretty quickly at that.
If the coach wasn't hamstrung by crater sized holes in the roster, we would have won more of those close games, and the gm would still have his job
How did Idzik "put his successor in a pretty good position to succeed" when according to everybody Idzik did a bad job?
Just look at our cap space. If you have a top 4 draft pick in the first round, 2nd round, 3rd round, potentially 4th round, 5th, round and 7th round + $40 million + a good crop of players in many positions (and very few must-have Jet free agents other than Harrison), and you're a new GM with the ability to hire a whole new coaching staff and do whatever you need to do to succeed, you've been put in a good position to succeed. Let's compare that to what Idzik had when he became a GM: He couldn't hire his own coaching staff, he had less than $5 million in cap space and (in my opinion, though it's debatable) he had worse talent in many respects. Plus he didn't have a top 5 pick to start with. My comment doesn't mean that Idzik did a good job; he's just allowing the next GM the flexibility to be successful and give this franchise a quick turnaround. Idzik needed a multi-year rebuild to succeed; our next GM won't necessarily need more than an off-season (assuming we figure out our Qb situation).
Oh okay I got it. Idzik didn't do a good job except that he did a good job setting the GM up with cap flexibility and some solid young pieces. Makes sense.
You cut Jason Smith,,,,release and resign Pace,,,,,get rid of Scott,,,,,and the next few guys escape me I know Sanchez was one,,,and you save lots of money,,,,,,so what exactly did the GM do to help us ?
well its better to clean house than to force a head coach already in place on a new gm. for once, woody is making the right call.
Um... yes it does mean he has done a good job. It's a rebuild, we're gonna have a couple of bad years. You can't replace a 54 man roster in 2 years, it takes time and money. We need a QB, we need a CB and we need to beef up the oline. We're in decent shape going forward.
Coaches manage not to collapse when their CB's get injured all the time. You'd think Rex would have been able to pull out some of the really tight games the Jets lost at the beginning of the year. Instead he did things like leaving a returning Dee Milliner 1 on 1 against Jordy Nelson with no deep help, allowing the sidelines to degenerate to the point the Jets couldn't call a timeout when they needed too, watching the penalties on the OL reach the breaking point, sticking with Geno when the guy was finding a new way to lose a game every week, etc. The Jets should have been 7-9 this year. When they win 3 games that's on the coaching staff.
We could have spent another 20 mil and still only reached 7-9. Doesn't help us going forward. We take this year for what it was, a rebuild, evaluation year. If we had over achieved again, it gives false hope and false expectations again. Good teams find a way to beat bad teams.
Idzik has not done a bad job or anywhere near the level people here attest. Stage 1 was cleaning up the mess - which he did. Stage 2 upgrade skill positions and get younger - in process but mostly done. He set himself up pretty nicely in my opinion to succeed moving forward unfortunately he will not be able see through the process. This team was not ready for a top QB yet, probabaly not even next year -- when Idzik took over I was looking at 2016 as the earliest to be really good and some of that was because I thought would go last year and his new coach wold be in year 3 and ready.
one facet of the job, break it down into 4 sections draft-bad really 4 players in 20 hits and no receivers in a receiver rich draft last year free agency- poor brought in Decker and 1 OL and the rest was status poor. Wanted more help for young qb. Johnson appears to be done. Let every corner walk away free agency plan for db's fell apart trades- two moves stand out Harvin a perceived panic move spending the cap he saved for a 6th round pick on what may be a 1 year rental. Ivory a good move Cap the only thing he did right but again you or I could have done this by cutting and not spending. can you run a check book and balance your bills knowing what you will make in the next 5 years? then you to can become a cap expert that is why he will be fired. in my book he was correct on 40 percent of what he did if it was baseball he would be golden. But poor drafts and free agencies lack to find players caused this team to have more holes in it from when he started and a team with 20 draft picks even with injuries should not have started nelson and salas in a game and should not have struggled in finding corners
These people are contradicting themselves. I've caught a few in their contradictions on this forum this weekend.
he has not done a solid job in free agency look at the players he got in free agency as whole, only decker and patterson stand out each for polar opposites. And no when you have 5 players contributing from two drafts out of 20 picks that is 25% that is a sucky job look at what I wrote and either then try to explain your point but to say what you did shows either you have no basis for what you are judging it on or your an Idzik fan. No issue with either but the response was week. he did such a bad job in free agency and addressing the corner situation it contributed the safety he picked in the first round to have a bad to questionable year He did such a crappy job addressing the receiver situation david nelson and greg salas started games for us this year at the same time. That is crappy job no matter how you cut it
