Looks like a landslide with goodbye Idzick. He'll get a job doing what he's good at. And it isn't being a GM..
Cimini along with Mehta wants Idzik out the door. But a few months ago he said good job selecting Pryor. Then he sees that Pryor sucks so he changes his stand. As for Kiper he knows college players. But like everyone else you can't predict how a player will acclimate into the NFL. Geno was a good pick but he isn't a good NFL Qb.
I think you can go thru his draft picks and find a lot more on the table than Sheldon. Of course you don't want to. So that'll be three Gms in two years. And if things don't break perfectly for the next victim (ie: the press doesn't like him) make that four in 4 years. Pretty embarrassing.
Thank you! - Picking Geno in the second round was a better pick than trading up for Sanchez (Even if Sanchez is a better NFL QB). Milliner was a good pick as well, even if he never sees the field again doesn't mean it wasn't a good pick or the right pick at the time. So was Pryor. Sometimes you get lucky with bad picks and reaches and sometimes good picks don't turn out as expected. There are ZERO guarantees in the NFL draft. Examples of bad picks are Vlad and Hill where you are reaching on some project that Nobody has ranked near where they are taken.
I think Milliner is going to be a good player. And imo if the Jets decided to trade him they could get back the same pick they selected him at. Because there just aren't that many good cover corners around and he showed the talent to play the position the last part of 2013. Rex was smart benching him and it worked. The guy started learning the position and played pretty well. As for Pryor. He was a disappointment. But he thinks he can turn it around. It's not impossible that the Jets could have a good secondary as early as 2015 if guys are healthy. But you still have to sign a veteran cover corner. Not signing one (other than Patterson) in 2014 isn't the reason the team is 3-12.
Fire Idzik, but its not nearly all his fault as it has been made out to be. Any GM who took the job in 2012 would have been screwed as the team was in cap hell and had maybe 5 young good talented players on the team. Idzik is still paying for the sins of Tanny and the 2009 and 2010 runs to the postseason as those drafts were gutted and should be the base for the team right now. Now he has done some good (Sheldon, Ivory, Harvin, Decker, Aboushi, Amaro, Marcus Williams) and some bad (Geno, Milliner [jury is still out but he was injury prone at Alabama], Will Cambell, Saunders). He also failed to improve the cornerback position. I also won't get into Bradway still being in the organization and having a scouting department of misfit toys. With all the cap space that they had he probably could have spent in free agency with structured contracts that would not have killed future cap flexibility (Tanny's downfall), however he seemed hell bent on building through the draft only. But if this team could have had Revis and Cromartie and a serviceable QB they are probably a playoff team. All in all I say he didn't have a 100% fair shot but he also has had his share of blunders mainly free agency that could have put bandaids on the team and allowed the draft picks more time to develop and become the core of the team.
I don't know about Bradway. I never disliked him. But it seems like much disloyalty in the organization to Idzik. Many leaks and unnamed sources still around. All of these stories about discord. Of course we don't know what's true or not true. Is this just guys who don't want to change anything and are trying to get this guy fired because he wants to go in a different direction. I don't see a lot of confidence coming from Woody either. He doesn't have Idzik's back that's for sure. If he did he would have given him a vote of confidence. He hasn't so we can assume he's out.
keep him. let him carry out his plan with his own coach. and can someone throw up the same poll re Rex Ryan? My bet is that for every vote to fire idzik, there's a vote to keep rr.
That's my biggest pet peeve about all these "experts" now, trashing Idzik's decisions that they loved at the time. It's like one of your relatives, praising some decision you made, and then the moment it doesn't work out, they suddenly tell you "Oh how could you do such a stupid thing!". Backseat driving to the fullest... Taking Geno was a good move. Buffalo took the same type of QB prospect in Manuel in the mid first round. Hell, we took the same type of unproven QB prospect with the 5th overall pick, using both 1st and 2nd round picks to trade up. But Geno was taken in the 2nd round, which for a team with nothing at QB was a solid move. Everyone loved the Pryor pick. But now it's stupid. And Milliner did look really good at the end of last year and when he was healthy this year. So he got injured. You know who else got injured? Clowney. Ryan Shazier. Shit happens.
Half of this fan base would be calling Clowney a bust right now and a huge mistake, even if we drafted him at 8 not 1
Well, let's put aside the fact that Woody probably told him not to get Revis, and let's say they signed Revis and Cromartie, and let Vick (a serviceable NFL QB) start from the beginning. I am not as sure as you that they are a playoff team in that case, but they would probably be on the playoff bubble, competing for a spot, and maybe even make it. But then what? That team gets bounced early in the playoffs. Much worse draft picks, and your 2 starting cornerbacks are 30+ headed into next year. Young guys don't get any play (Milliner, McDougle, Geno, etc) so you don't know what you have there. So you are just stuck as a mediocre team every year competing for a chance at what? To get bounced by the real contenders? Is this what NY fans want? That's what it seems like.
All you have to do is make the tournament to have a shot. And having a top 10 pick doesn't even guarantee success. I'd rather have continuity than be starting over. Keep in mind Seattle did what I posted by signing some veterans and found Russell Wilson in the 3rd round and many of their other gems late in the draft. They're now one of the best teams in football.
I'm not sure Geno can't end up being a decent NFL Qb. Unlike Mark he just has to know and understand his limitations. Of course that doesn't mean going into 2015 with him penciled in as the starter. To me he 's on the team but with a good veteran Qb whose going to be the starter. The Vick plan wasn't a bad one it like other things just didn't work out. It was a good signing. btw good point on Clowney who was injured and gave his team nothing. Plus he made over 14 mil and was the highest paid DL in the NFL. So I guess that means he's a bust, too. And that's the Houston GM's fault. Fire him!
Lol at bringing up Seattle. The core of their team were all players they drafted and developed. Some of whom showed nothing their first years but are now key contributors.
No, I am sorry, but you are not going to have a shot with Vick as your QB. Seattle built their team the same way Idzik wants to, by assembling together young players. They have had some amazing drafts, but that's not going to happen too often, so typically this approach takes more time. They sure as hell didn't win a championship by going all in on 30 year old players.
The thing about placing the blame is. Whose fault is the 3-12 on. Some of the press likes Rex personally and doesn't love Idzik. What if we had a different HC this season but with the Idzik plan. Same players. No established corner but no Rex defense. But a lot of very good players. Would things have been any better. Could the new DC have been able to do a better job with the talent he was given. And as far as offense. Kind of hard to believe things couldn't have been improved with different coaches. The game plan was hard to understand. Very little balance. Sometimes key players were little used. It took over half a season to start giving Chris Ivory more carries. And then too many.
How is having 3 30 year old when you have around 30 mil in cap space assembling a terrible roster. I guess you are OK with 3 wins repeatedly as long as you use all your draft picks?
Look I'm all for holding onto your cap space and not committing it to inferior players who just happen to be free agents. This way you can build depth and have money available when someone good becomes available like Percy Harvin. The smart orgs like the Steelers and Patriots never overpay for free agents they let guys walk. But if Idzik is fired I'd like to see a clean sweep in the front office. All of those guys who stabbed Idzik in the back have to go. Why should a new GM have to deal with this kind of deceit. We're talking about the Sanchez boys who still think Mark is a franchise Qb. And hate Idzik for cutting him.
